Campers learn how to protect and serve

Medford Police
Departments first
Junior Police
Academy a success
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
Helping to transform the traditional role of the police officer
into both a mentor and friend, the
Medford Township Police Department held a weeklong Junior Police Academy day camp from
Monday, Aug. 8 through Friday,
Aug. 12.
Providing young citizens with
an introduction to law enforcement, the camp covered a multitude of topics, including the history of law enforcement, gangs,
motor vehicle and criminal law,
DWI enforcement, teens and
drug/alcohol use, crime scene
and
evidentiary
processing,
fire/EMS services, CPR training,
police K-9 units and more.
I think this camp is good for
both the community and the kids
because it provides the cadets
with positive role models in town
that they can trust. It also helps to
foster a bond between the youth
and the police, said Lt. Arthur
Waterman, who joined the Medford Township Police on June 6,
1998, and who now oversees its
community relations unit.

LINDSEY NOLEN/The Sun

Instructors at Medfords first Junior Police Academy camp stand behind their cadet campers at Freedom Park on Tuesday, Aug. 9.
From 9 a.m. to noon on each
day of the camp, Medford police
officers helped motivate the
young cadets to become outstanding citizens and to empower them
to act as a positive influence in
the local community. The officers
also sought to encourage this
years 26 young cadets to become
partners in building safer schools
and a safer overall community.
I really liked learning about
what police officers do on a dayto-day basis, said Addison

Goldfinger, a 14-year-old cadet

and student at Medford Memorial
Middle School. Police officers
have to push through struggles to
catch the bad guys or to solve a
mystery no matter what.
At the camp, cadets were involved in various classroomlearning activities and participated in physical fitness training all
while asking the officers any
questions that came to their
minds. Also during the camp,
cadets were able to witness a sta-

tion tour, participate in a crime

scene investigation and a military drill as well as learn how law
enforcement has evolved throughout the years.
We can all test ourselves and
push ourselves to achieve our
goals. Today, the goal is to keep
running further and faster, and
you can all accomplish anything, Sgt. Jason Deroian told
the cadets during physical training at Freedom Park on Tuesday,
Aug. 9. The best accomplish-

ments are the ones that are hardest to achieve.

Deroian came up with the idea
for the Academy, modeling it after
other police departments that
have hosted similar youth camps.
Hearing of the positive experiences other departments had
with this type of camp, he
thought: Why not host one right
here in Medford?

The Volunteer Center of

Burlington County awarded five
college scholarships on Wednesday, Aug. 3, totaling $30,000 to five
Burlington County high school
seniors, including Eric Biehn of
Medford, who have demonstrated
a commitment to community
service, leadership and academic
achievement.
Biehn, a senior at Shawnee
High School, plans to attend Duke
University for math/science and
plans to later obtain a postgraduate degree in genetics and research. As for community service,
he has initiated fundraisers for
Christines Hope for Kids to assist
children in need, and for Toys for
Tots. He was also a leader in the
Green Dot anti-bullying program,
a regular volunteer in annual MS

walks, and also a volunteer at

church and community cleanups
and donation drives at the Animal
Welfare Center and at assisted living facilities.
Biehn was presented a $5,000
check during the ceremony held
at Burlington Countys Historic
Smithville Park in Eastampton. A
review committee that evaluated
66 applications the most ever
submitted in the five-year history
of the scholarship selected him.
The Volunteer Center has now
awarded $125,500 in scholarship
money.
Kris Laufer, a son of the late
Joseph Laufer, a former recipient
of the Volunteer Centers Community Service Award for whom
the scholarship was named, presented the check. Holly Haines,

representing the Haines Family

Foundation, also participated in
the ceremony. The foundation is
a generous contributor to the
scholarship program.
These are outstanding young
people who have displayed not
only a lengthy record of participation in many community service activities, but also an ability
and willingness to organize and
lead, said Laufer. In addition,
all of these young people have
stellar academic records.
The scholarship program is
Joe Laufers legacy but was
named in his honor long before
his passing. Laufer actually had
taken the major role in administering the program. His wife,
Penny, and four children, continue to support the initiative.

Children in the nearby communities were invited to soar to new

in Medford. The camp was held
the weeks of Aug. 1-5, Aug. 8-12,

to students who had completed
one of the first two introductory
camp weeks Aug. 15-19.
Its really interesting because
the kids are very intrigued when
they see the planes come in and

many of the first-time campers,
they havent been this close to see

Sports betting dead ... for now

Court ruling just means the fight for legal sports betting will be delayed

Dan McDonough Jr.

et another court struck down

hard against New Jerseys
fight for legal sports betting
last week. This time, it was the United
States Court of Appeals for the Third
Circuit, which ruled against the states
wishes to operate legal sports betting
in casinos and racetracks.
The court upheld the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection
Act, which prohibits all but four states
from operating or licensing sports betting. The court ruled 10-2 in favor of
upholding the law, striking perhaps
the last legal blow to New Jerseys
fight for legal sports betting ...
... At least for now.
While New Jersey doesnt have
many, if any, more legal options to legalize sports betting in our state, it has
the changing landscape of public opin-

ion on its side.

People in this country are becoming
OK with sports betting; its easier for
them to swallow now than it was, say
more than 24 years ago, when PASPA
was enacted. Seton Hall University
conducted a recent poll that found that
63 percent of people believe betting on
sports should be legal, with 68 percent
saying its legality should be decided
on the state level.
The fact is that there is a lot of
money at stake here, too. Nevada accepted $4.2 billion in sports wagers

last year. Thats a lot of money, but its

nothing compared to the estimated
$150 billion in wagers placed each year
with illegal bookmakers, who are either affiliated with organized crime
rings or are stationed overseas.
New Jersey also has some powerful
allies on its side. Legislators in New
York, California and Pennsylvania are
also trying to legalize sports betting in
their states.
All this foreshadows New Jerseys
next move a lobbying effort at the
federal level to have the law changed.
With the change in government scheduled for January no matter who
wins the race its the perfect time to
reach a captive audience.
For the sake of our states income,
lets hope that captive audience agrees
with our states take on the topic.

the camp, who would not otherwise be able

We are so appreciative of the support
that we get from the community and from

able to serve young people from all over, including many of the poorest areas in Camden and Philadelphia. And for every child

Camp incorporates STEAM principles

CAMP
Continued from page 4
Evolving from a Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H youth development-based program called
Blue Sky Below my Feet, a program that offers area schools a 45minute hands-on program focusing on the principles of flight, the
resulting Aerospace Camp now
helps to continue the focus on aviation education during the summer months.
With the goal of alleviating
summer learning loss, the camp
involves many principles of science, technology, engineering and
math as well as encourages reading practice and the memorization of the phonetic alphabet.
While another goal of the camp is
to empower the youth of tomorrow to take F.L.I.G.H.T. standing
for fearless, leadership, imagination, gratitude, honesty and tenac-

ity the camp nevertheless aims

at simultaneously having fun.
Because of the learning loss
that takes place over the summer,
our camp promotes aviation activities through real, hands-on experiences,
Nancy
LucasMacPhee, the director of the
camp, said. This prevents learning loss and lets the kids come out
with so much more knowledge.
Parents want camps to be fun, but
also educational.
At this camp, students collaborated with experts in the field of
aerospace education while flying
alongside E.A.A. young Eagles,
members of a program launched
in 1992 to give interested people
ages 8 to 17 the opportunity to go
flying in a general aviation airplane. Campers also learned how
to build rockets and airplanes, operate the Flyit Simulator, explore
instrument and navigation incorporating mapping and direction
and participate in a variety of
hands-on activities including an

introductory flight, weather permitting.

I loved building the Wright
brothers plane because it was
fun and I got to build something,
8-year-old camper Kyle Meriwether of Evesham said. Its
been a long time since I got to actually build something.
I like the airplanes because
when I grow up, I really want to
be an airplane pilot, 7-year-old
camper Taylor Krauss of Medford said. Right now, Im learning about the different parts of
airplanes and how they work, so
Ill know how to fly them better
someday.
Based on the belief that all students learn by doing, Aerospace
Camp welcomes the opportunity
to introduce each child to the
world of aerospace and the endless possibilities available in the
field and in the sky. For more information on the camp, visit
www.aerospace4kids.com or call
(609) 351-4341.

Grants will help send kids to camp who

could otherwise not afford to attend
GRANTS
Continued from page 6
cer we provide a safe, nurturing,
fun-filled place for them to belong.
According to Dibble, Camp
Ockanickons outdoor experiences build an appreciation for
the natural world and provide the
settings for children and youth to
develop lifelong values. Healthy
living is fostered through camp,
creating social responsibility.
At Camp Ockanickon, located
in Medford, campers can enjoy
water inflatables on several lakes,
an air-conditioned gym, boating,
archery, a craft center, trails, a nature center, challenge courses, zip

lines, horseback riding and creative expression classes featuring

drama, photography and more.
Camp Ockanickon is an organization that helps young people realize their potential, a place
that encourages their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development, Dibble added. Were
proud of the impact that a YMCA
camp experience can have on a
childs life, and we take that awesome responsibility quite seriously.
Camp Ockanickon applied for
the grants from the Investors
Bank and Roma Community
Bank Foundations, which support non-profit organizations that
enrich the diverse communities
served by Investors Bank. Roma

Bank became part of Investors

Bank in December 2013.
Investors Bank is proud to be
able to send campers to YMCA
Camp Ockanickon this summer
to enjoy the outdoors and learn
important skills, said CarolAnne Peacock, assistant vice
president, branch manager
Maple Shade.
Everyone remembers their
first camp experience, and we at
Investors Bank are hoping to help
give kids fantastic memories this
summer by sending them to
Camp Ockanickon, said Carol
Eckert, assistant vice president,
branch manager Medford.
Camp Ockanickons motto is
everyone belongs, and we
strongly support that.
