STORAGE

Store tightly-closed, protected from oxygen and


heat. At storage a decrease in content is observed
by forming dithioglycolide.

Storage temperature (+5C) - (+30C);
recommended < (+20C)

SHIPPING / HANDLING

Toxic by inhalation, in contact with skin, and if


swallowed. Causes burns.

REGULATIONS

EU

According to the EEC Cosmetic Directive 76/768 the


use level of thioglycolic acid is restricted
a) in hair waving or straightening products to 8 %
(ready for use) for general use and 11 % (ready
for use) for professional use
b) in depilatories to 5 % (ready for use)
c) in other hair care products which we removed
after application to 2 % (ready for use)

The pH value has to be


a) between 7 and 9.5
b) between 7 and 12.7
c) between 7 and 9.5
The directions for use drawn up in the national or
official language must obligatory incorporate the
following sentences:
"Avoid contact with eyes. In event of contact with
eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and
seek medical advice. Wear suitable gloves (only for
a) and c))".
Conditions of use and warnings which must be
printed on the label:
"Contains thioglycolate salts. Follow the
instructions. Keep out of reach of children" and
additionally if the use level of thioglycolic acid is
higher than 8 % "For professional use only".

USA

Thioglycolic acid, salts, and esters are regulated in


the USA as cosmetic ingredients. There is no legal
restriction as to use level. Products generally have a
warning label, instructing the customer to test the
product on a small area before use.

Japan

Thioglycolic acid is classified as quasi-drug. The


permitted concentrations are in permanent waving
(calculated on thioglycolic acid):
1. Cold one component type
3.0 - 3.3 %
2. Cold two component types
2.0 - 11.0 %
3. Heat two component types
1.0 - 5.0 %
4. Exothermic heat
8.0 - 19.0 %
Two component types (one side component
containing thioglycolate acid was prepared before
use).
Maximum permitted concentration in hair dyes:
1.0 %
