Helenas V-stitch poncho

This pattern is made using US crochet


terms.

The poncho is worked in the round, top


down, and the neck edging is added last.
Gauge:

3 V-st = 2 inches, 4 rows = 2 inches for DK


weight yarn
Yarn:

DK weight (original work-up used Marks &


Kattens Madrid, 100% acrylic)
Yardage:

640 meters
700 yards
Hook:

5mm (H) or size needed to make correct gauge.


Size:

Indicated yarn and gauge makes a poncho which is ca 20 inches long in the front.

Row 1:
Fsc 88. Join with sl st. Put stitch markers in stitch numbers 1 (first marker, side), 23 (second marker, front
center), 45 (third marker, side) and 67 (fourth marker, back center). Move stitch markers down as work
progresses.
Row 2:
For the first dc of each round Ive substituted ch 3, but you can also use the no-turning chain dc
Ch 3, dc in each st around. Join with sl st in tc. Total 88 dc, counting first ch3 as 1 dc.
Row 3:
Sl st in ch-space, ch 4, dc in same dc, skip next dc, *V-st in following dc, skip next dc*. Repeat * - *
around = 44 V-st. Join with sl st in first V-st of row.

Row 4 - 5:
Sl st in ch-space, ch 4, dc in same V-st, V-st in each V-st around, = 44 V-st.
Row 6:
Please see picture on p. 3 for clarification of space before marked V-st
Sl st in ch-space, ch 4, dc in same V-st (first marker, side), V-st in each V-st until the V-st before the
second marker. V-st in the space before marked V-st, V-st in marked V-st (front center), V-st in space
after marked V-st, V-st in each V-st until the fourth marker, V-st in the space before marked V-st, V-st in
marked V-st (back center), V-st in space after marked V-st, V-st in each V-st until the first marker. Join
with sl st in first V-st. = 48 V-st.
Row 7 - 8:
Sl st in ch-space, ch 4, dc in same V-st, V-st in each V-st around, = 48 V-st. Repeat row once.
Row 9
Sl st in ch-space, ch 4, dc in same V-st (first marker, side), V-st in each V-st until the V-st before the
second marker. V-st in the space before marked V-st, V-st in marked V-st (front center), V-st in space
after marked V-st, V-st in each V-st until the fourth marker, V-st in the space before marked V-st, V-st in
marked V-st (back center), V-st in space after marked V-st, V-st in each V-st until the first marker. Join
with sl st in first V-st. = 52 V-st.
Row 10 - 11
Sl st in ch-space, ch 4, dc in same V-st, V-st in each V-st around, = 52 V-st. Repeat row once.
Row 12:
Sl st in ch-space, ch 4, dc in same V-st (first marker, side), V-st in space after marked V-st, V-st in each
V-st until the V-st before the second marker. V-st in the space before marked V-st, V-st in marked V-st
(front center), V-st in space after marked V-st, V-st in each V-st until the third marker, V-st in the space
before marked V-st, V-st in marked V-st (side), V-st in space after marked V-st, V-st in each V-st until
the fourth marker, V-st in the space before marked V-st, V-st in marked V-st (back center), V-st in space
after marked V-st, V-st in each V-st until the first marker, V-st in the space before marked V-st. Join with
sl st in first V-st. = 60 V-st.
Row 13 - 14:
Sl st in ch-space, ch 4, dc in same V-st, V-st in each V-st around. = 60 V-st. Repeat row once.
Row 15 - 32:
Repeat rows 6 14 twice, work totals 32 rows. Row 32 = 92 V-st.
Row 33:
Sl st in ch-space, ch 4, dc in same V-st (first marker, side), V-st in each V-st until the V-st before the
second marker. V-st in the space before marked V-st, V-st in marked V-st (front center), V-st in space
after marked V-st, V-st in each V-st until the fourth marker, V-st in the space before marked V-st, V-st in
marked V-st (back center), V-st in space after marked V-st, V-st in each V-st until the first marker. Join
with sl st in first V-st. = 96 V-st.

Row 34:
Sl st in V-st, ch3, 2 dc in same V-st, ch1, 3 dc in same V-st,* dc in next V-st, dc between V-st, dc in next
V-st, dc in space between V-st, dc in next V-st, 3 dc in next V-st, ch 1, 3 dc in same V-st*. Repeat * - *
around, join with sl st in tc.
The basic principle for this row is to make a shell in every 4 V-st, with 5 dcs between each shell. You
should have a total of 24 shells.
Row 35:
Sl st in first dc, ch 3, dc in next dc, 2 dc in ch-sp, ch1, 2 dc in same ch-sp, dc in next 2 dc. Skip next dc, dc
in spaces between next 5 dcs (4 dcs total). * Skip next 2 dcs, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same chsp, dc in next 2 dc. Skip next dc, dc in spaces between next 5 dcs (4 dcs total). Repeat from * around. Join,
fasten and weave in ends.See chart and picture below.

Neck edging:
The neck edging is worked in the round.
Fasten yarn at one side of neckline. *Hdc in each st around but skip each side, front center and back
center stitch* (decreasing the amount of stitches by 4 on each row). Join with sl st and continue with next
row. Repeat *-* twice for a total of 3 rows of hdc. Fasten and weave in ends.
