JNU-ENTRANCE EXAMINATION- 2006
M.Sc. PHYSICS
Maximum Marks: 100
PART-A
NOTE: Answer all questions. Each question carries 10 marks.
Q.1

A projectile of mass M explodes into three fragments while in flight at velocity v . One
fragment of mass (M/2) travels in the original direction, one of mass (3M/10) comes to
rest, and the third fragment of mass (M/5) travels in the opposite direction. The energy
releases in the explosion is equal to 4.75 times the kinetic energy of the projectile before
explosion. What are the velocities of the fragments?

Q.2

Calculate the electrostatic energy of a uniformly charged sphere of radius r with total
charge Q.

Q.3

(a) Write down the van der Waals equation of state for a gas. Use it to obtain the
temperature, pressure and volume at the critical point.
(b) Consider an ideal gas consisting of identical particles of mass m obtain an expression
for the average quantity v n at temperature T, where v is the particle speed and n is a
positive integer.

Q.4

Consider the function

f x

(a) Show that f(x) = x2 for x (Hint: Use Fourier expansion).

(b) What does f(x) represent for x > and x < -? Sketch the function for all x.

(c) Using (a), show that

Q.5

The wave function of a particle in a box is given by

x
x C sin
L

in the region 0 < x< L and (x) = 0 outside.

(a) Find the normalization constant C.

(b) Calculate the expectation values of X and X2, where X is the position operator.
(c) Calculate the expectation values of p and p2, where p is the momentum operator.

Q.1

Consider the matrix

(a) Show that An = 2 n-1 A for n = 1, 2, 3,.

(b) Evaluate exp (cA), where c is a constant.
Q.2

Suppose you are shining a monochromatic parallel beam of light on a wedge shaped film
(wedge angle = 10 -4 radian) of refractive index 1.5. The beam is incident normally on
the wedge and the spacing between the fringes created in the reflected mode is 2 mm.
Calculate the wavelength of light.

Q.3

When dust is released by a comet, it does not continue along the comets orbit because
radiation pressure pushes it radically outward from the sun. Assume that a spherical dust
particle has density = 3.5 x 103 kg/m3 and it totally absorbs the sunlight falling on it.
Given that suns gravitational force on the particle just balances the radiation force,
calculate the radius R of the dust particle. (Radiation power of the sun Ps = 3.90 x 10 26 W,
Mass of the sun Ps = 1.99 x 1030 kg).

Q.4

For a simple pendulum of mass m of the length L, derive the time period of motion when
the angular amplitude of oscillation is 0 (which is not necessarily small).

Q.5

The energy released in the fission of one

235

U92 nucleus is roughly 200 MeV. Calculate

the maximum power in MW that can be obtained if 1 kg of 235U92 undergoes fission over
one week.
Q.6

Two cars kept at points P1 and P2, separated by a distance of 1 km, start simultaneously
as seen by an observer on the ground. An aero plane is flying at a velocity of 1050 km/hr
along the direction from P1 to P2. What will be the difference in time between the two
events (i.e., starting of the cars) for an observer inside the plane?

where is a constant.
Q.8

Consider a single loop circuit with a resistor (R =160 ), a capacitor (C = 10 F), an

inductor (L = 200 mH) and an alternating source with Emax = 36 V. If the circuit is driven
at frequency f = 50 Hz
(a) find the impendence Z for the circuit
(b) find the amplitude of the current I and the phase constant .

Q.9

A body-centered cubic (bcc) cell has a lattice constant a.

(a) How many atoms are there in the cubic unit cell?
(b) What is the spacing between the (111) planes?
(c) What will be the Bragg diffraction angles for scattering from the (100) planes of the
crystal?

Q.10

What is the momentum of a photon emitted by a hydrogen atom when the atom makes a
transition from the n = 2 to the n = 1 state? Assume the atom to be initially at rest and
take into account the recoil due to the photon emission. The rest mass of hydrogen atom
is approximately 940 MeV.
