Chapter 1

Description of the Research

This chapter covers the introduction & background of

study, statement of problem, assumption, significance of
study

theoretical

framework,

conceptual

framework,

scope and delimitation of study and review of related

literature and study.

1.1

Introduction & Background of the Study

Security has been one of the major concerns of

todays

daily

living.

Home

and

business

industrys

security issues become a major concerns since everyone

in home or industry wants to protect their investments
from any form of destruction or loss. In terms of security,

technology

has

its

own

contribution

in

developing

equipment with a better degree of providing security and

monitoring a given area or establishment that requires
security.
Security systems consist of alarms and sensors which
are being installed in the houses for effective and
efficient way of protecting home properties. Security and
protection system are any of various means or devices
designed to guard persons and property against a broad
range of hazards, including crime, accidents, sabotage
and attacks. An example of alarm system is a car alarm,
this device can make a loud noise if anyone tries to break
into the vehicle. With these act, an attempt for theft is
immediately discouraged.
Most of the buildings and houses installed closed
circuit television surveillance system to monitor and
record inside the building. In the proponents view, this

type of system is not enough to give a real time security

to avoid damages of properties and intruders alerts
because the incident will be noticed only after the
incident happened or after the video records were
reviewed. Most of the building incidents like burglary are
mostly being done in the presence of security systems is
because the criminal knows that the system is not a real
time and just recording happenings. Therefore, these
people can plan on what they will do to be unnoticed.
Because of this observation, the proponents that come up
with the idea of developing a project entitled Arduino
PIR-motion sensor Security System to enhance the level
of security, and personal protection.

1.2

Statement of the Problem

1.2.1 General

A device controller that detects, sense, alarms and

send information to home owner through SMS (Short
Message Service)

1.2.2 Specific

What are the data needed to develop the Arduino

PIR-motion sensor Security System?
What is the plan to design the project?
What are the materials needed to develop the
project?
What are the testing procedures to be done after the
development of the project?

1.3

This

Assumption
study

is

conducted

based

on

the

following

assumption and there are two ways in arming your home:

Stay (home mode) the system assumes that you
are home and typically this will mean that motion
sensors are disabled or enabled.
Away mode: the system assumes that you are out of
house and will therefore enable the sensors.

1.4

Significance of Study

This study is significant to the following:

To the home owners, this project will help keep their

properties secured and safe.
To the security personnel, this will help them respond
quickly on unwanted incidents which may happen to
buildings/establishment and homes.
To the proponents, this project will help them in
applying their knowledge in software development
Lastly to the future researchers, it will served as
reference material if they would conduct similar
study.

Theoretical Framework

1.6

Conceptual Framework
Input

Process

Output

Figure 1
Figure1 shows the progress of the study, it shows the
necessary methods that were taken into consideration.
The

phases

namely,

Input,

Process,

Output

were

introduced in the theoretical framework which shows the

sequence

of

the

procedures

to

follow

until

the

development of the study. On the input phase, ideas and

concepts can be acquired from the internet, books and
related researches that can contribute greatly in the
making

of

this

research.

Furthermore,

the

needed

information and appropriate materials follows. Thereafter,

planning and designing the construction of the project
comes next. The process includes programming and
encoding. Lastly, testing and evaluation of the results will
be conducted.

1.7

Scope and Delimitation

1.7.1 Scope

The scope of the study is to design a Security system

with SMS verification that detected from intruders,
trespassers, criminals or any form of criminal act.
The system is consists of motion sensors and
microcontrollers such as Arduino and with SMS
verification to home owner and to the government
authorities (PNP).
Only the authorized personnel can activate the
system.

1.7.2 Delimitation

The system was only limited on detecting door

opening, smoke, heat, fire and gas.
Everyone will pass through the sensor will consider
as intruders once the system is activated.

Definition of Terms
The following terms are used conceptually and
operationally for better understanding of the study.

Arduino : Is a hardware and software company,

projects and user community that designs and

manufactures computer open source-hardware and

open source-software, and microcontroller-based kits
for building digital devices and interactive objects
that can sense and control physical devices.

PIR-Sensor : Passive Infrared sensor is an

Electronic sensor that measures infrared, a light
radiating from objects in its field of view.
Microcontroller : A compact microcomputer
designed to govern the operation of embedded
systems in motor vehicles, robots, office machines,
complex medical devices, mobile radio transceivers,
vending machines, home appliances and various
device. In this study it was the central control of the
sensor device the system.

Motion Sensor : A device that is sensitive to the

movement especially used for security reasons and
navigation aid. It was the sensor device of the study.

Global Systems for Mobile (GSM) : A digital

cellular phone technology. This was used in research
to be the signal converter of sensor data to SMS
signals.

Short Message Service (SMS) Technology : is

used to send and received text to mobile phones
using Global systems for mobile (GSM). In the study
it is the connection technology between the sensory
device and mobile device used in system
development.
