LABORATORY REPORT ON SAFETY

INTRODUCTION
Education in this modern era has evolved so much that, much emphasis has been placed on
laboratory work or employment of the investigative or experimental approach to teaching and
learning. These have now made laboratories a place where many chemicals with health risks,
complex equipment, and potential pathogens are encountered always. Workers within
laboratories are exposed every day to numerous forms of potential hazards which could either be
chemical, physical, biological and radioactive.
Safety could be said to be specific work practice controls, engineering controls, personal
preventive and protective equipment that help provide safety against hazardous materials and
pathogens. The risk associated with hazards in the laboratories could be brought to the barest
minimum if proper precautions and practices are observed in the laboratory at all times.
Laboratory hazards come in different forms, amongst which are chemical, biological, physical
and radioactive and all these hazards have their own ways of managing them.
This laboratory session was basically an introduction to laboratory practices with emphasis on
the safety management actions to be taken during lab sessions. Students were clearly introduced
to laboratory safety rules and how to manage and maintain to keep the laboratory hygienic and
free from injuries.

LIST OF LABORATORY SAFETY PRACTICES

Laboratory safety practices are rules set to meet specific operational needs and to reduce the
risks associated with laboratory hazards. As a necessity, all students must receive specific
training in local safety rules and laboratory procedures relating to their laboratory work. Students
are to comply with these practices at all times.
These practices could categorize under different headings including;

GENERAL CONDUCTS
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.

Never use defective equipment or use any equipment without the help of a technician.
Prevent overcrowding, running, and sitting on laboratory benches in the laboratory.
Immediately report spills, accidents or injuries to a supervisor.
Never perform experiments without a supervisors authorization.
Always use pipetting devices to fill pipettes.
Make sure there are no flammable solvents are in the surrounding when lighting a flame.
Do not remove any equipment or chemical from the laboratory.
Coats, bags and personal items must be stored in designated areas, not on the bench tops.

HOUSEKEEPING
1. Keep work area neat and free of any unnecessary objects.
2. Clean thoroughly your laboratory work space at the end of the laboratory session.

3. Inspect equipment for damage prior to use.

APPAREL AND HYGIENE PRACTICES

1. Wear protective clothing like gloves, goggles, shoes that adequately cover the foot
and remove all dangling jewelries and also take off all synthetic finger nails.
2. Avoid wearing shorts and short skirts and also secure long hairs and loose clothing
3. Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth and body while using chemical.
4. Food and drink whether open or closed should never enter the laboratory and never
use laboratory glassware for eating or drinking.

HANDLING CHEMICALS
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Check labels to verify if you using the correct chemical.

Do not directly touch any chemical with your hand.
Always use the hot water bath to heat flammable liquids.
Never smell, touch or taste any reagent.
Always the right equipment for the right job.
Always add concentrated acid to water slowly and not the other way round.
Use the chemical when dealing with chemicals that release toxic vapors, dust or gases
into the surrounding.
8. After transfer of chemicals from their original containers, make sure to label the new
container given all the assays of the transferred chemical.

EMERGENCY
1. Know all the exits in the laboratory and the building itself.
2. Know the location and how to use the following:
1. Fire extinguisher
2. Fire blankets
3. First aid kits
4. Sand buckets

CONCLUSION
Safety is an essential practice in the laboratory since there would always be new activities carried
out in the laboratory, which in essence means there is a high risk of injury and damage incidents.
It is therefore a necessity for students to be taught what can go wrong during laboratory sessions,
how to prevent the occurrence of such events, and steps to take in case of emergency. All have
the responsibility of keeping safe the laboratory environment by practicing good personal,
housekeeping, and laboratory techniques.
