Language Arts

Social Studies

In language arts this week, we learned

how characters respond to challenges and
changes throughout the story. In writing,
we wrote the beginning of our personal
narratives using great beginnings. We
are preparing to start Literature Circles in
the upcoming week. We also started
language arts rotations to enforce reading
skills, and a study of Greek and Latin
roots in vocabulary.

In social studies, we discussed assembly

lines, an extension of last weeks STEM
lesson. We also talked about
interdependence between countries. We
concluded the week with a STEM lesson to
enforce the concept of
interdependence.

Math

Science

In math, we concluded unit 1 on

multiplication and division strategies.
Students were given a unit test which will
be taken home on Tuesday with their data
binders. Math unit 2 is a mini-unit on
decimals. This weeks lessons focused on
the place value of decimals (tenths,
hundredths, and thousandths place).
Students will continue learning about
decimals next week. They will become
fluent in standard, expanded, and word
form of decimals.
*Students who wish to retest for
standards on unit 1 will have the
opportunity during the week of Oct. 10.

In science, students continued their study

of force and motion. They learned all
about drag or air resistance, and
aerodynamics. In small groups, students
designed a sail for their standard K-Nex
vehicle. During the next week, they will
test their vehicles and complete their
first lab report in science class.
