UK delays handing 23m of

taxpayers cash to Palestinians
The British government has frozen millions of pounds in

annual aid to the Palestinian Authority, amid claims the
money is enabling payments to terrorists.
International Development Secretary Priti Patel finally froze
23million in aid, pending an investigation, over fears that taxpayers money was being used to reward those who had murdered
Israelis. Among those welcoming the news this week were both
Conservative and Labour Friends of Israel, the Board of Deputies,
Jewish Leadership Council, Zionist Federation and grassroots
group We Believe in Israel.

The gathering at Shoreditch Town Hall, close
to the scene of the famous battle, was organised
by the London Jewish Forum and Jewish Leadership Council and media partnered by Jewish
News. Guests included MPs John Mann and
Stephen Timms, TUC general secretary Frances
OGrady, local councillors and Sir Trevor Chinn,
the inspiration behind the ceremony.
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis hailed the
bravery and heroism of those who took to the
streets. It was here we learnt the lesson of the
power of unity. So many individuals, groups and
families gained added strength from the numbers
of people who poured on to the streets, he said.
There should be no place for such sentiment
or such actions we need to have zero-tolerance
for racism, for xenophobia, for anti-Semitism.
MP Ruth Smeeth spoke of her grandmother
collecting rotten fruit to use as missiles during
the battle, while Reform Movement Senior Rabbi
Laura Janner-Klausner referred to her grandfathers service to the area as MP for Whitechapel.
She said: Todays not a commemoration.

Sadiq Khan has said the way communities came

together to repel fascism at Cable Street offers
a roadmap for defeating extremists, as Jewish
leaders and politicians came together to mark the
battles 80th anniversary.
The communitys gathering was part of a
series of events eight decades after a planned
march through a Jewish area of the East End by
Oswald Mosleys British Union of Fascists was
thwarted. Police had planned to allow the march
to proceed on 4 October 1936, but it was later
cancelled after 20,000 Jews, socialists and trade
unionists took to the streets to set up barricades
a landmark moment in the fight against racism.
The London mayor said British Jews should
be proud of the events of that day, whose message he said is as relevant today as it was then.
Its so important to recognise that history
tells us there are people who would divide our
communities and history tells us the roadmap
to defeat them, he told Jewish News. Solidarity,

to show a fraction of the courage shown by these
veterans with us today. They showed hateful
extremism wouldnt be tolerated then. We must
show that it never will be. This is our inheritance.
MP Rushanara Ali spoke of her pride at representing an area that is what it is because of
the struggle particularly of the British Jewish
community against fascism and anti-Semitism,
while LJF chair Adrian Cohen recalled the battle
led to the Public Order Act requiring a police
license to march and the banning of paramilitary
uniforms in political demonstrations.
He said: Racist, misogynistic, homophobic
or anti-Semitic prejudices are not confined to
fascists, although fascists tend to be more deliberate in their articulation of them. We must all
work together to resist our body politic across the
spectrum... becoming infected by ideologies of
extremism and intolerant ways of behaving.
Guests signed a pledge to tackle all forms of
racism including anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.
Meanwhile, thousands marched through the
East End past the famous Cable Street mural, as
part of an event organised by an assortment of

organisations including the Unite union. Among
them was a group from the Jewish Labour Movement, who sung the Hatikvah and Adon Olam.
Jeremy Corbyn, who learnt about the battle
from his mother Naomi, who was there at the
time, spoke of the deep personal significance of
the historic event. The principles that brought
those people on to the streets runs through my
DNA. I will never turn my back on those values.
I will fight against those who today aim to drive a
wedge between us and our communities.

This fight was

a family affair

The story of Cable Street is the story
of real lives, of the old East End and

the souls who inhabited it. Its a story
of rough-and-ready Irish dockers and
scrappy young Jews, of rabbis breaking
bread with Commies and bookies
breaking skulls with Blackshirts.
Its the story of my own family, and countless others. And the tales of that fateful day in
1936, and the lessons that they hold, should
never be forgotten.
Despite its place in history, the Battle of
Cable Street might never have taken place.
When it did, it was the result of necessity and
desperation rather than design.
When Mosleys plan to march through the
East End was announced, a deputation of the
five East London mayors visited the home
secretary directly to ask that the march be
banned. When this request was refused, the
community itself campaigned to put a halt
to the march, gathering a petition of more
than 100,000 signatures calling for a halt to
the event. Despite the obvious threat to local
residents, and the fierce opposition of the
local community, the authorities sided with
Mosleys fascists. In the face of this indifference, it was left to the community to defend
itself. And so it did.
My great uncle Hymie was a boxer, a
betting man and an alleged member of Jack
Spots Aldgate Mob. Later, like most East
End bookies, he would go on to become an
acquaintance of Ronnie and Reggie Kray. As it
turns out, Hymie was resourceful too when his
family, friends and community needed him to
be. When he heard a fight was on the cards, he
and his friends leapt into action. They organised a tour of the snooker halls and coffee shops
of the East End. They borrowed the snooker
cues and broom handles for future use, and
took the table legs too for good measure. They
also collected money, to grease the palms of the
local constabulary in an attempt to evade arrest
while defending the community. The actions
of the police that day showed the gesture
made little difference to an establishment that
shamefully sided with the fascists at every turn.
The struggle against the Blackshirts
was truly a family affair. My nana, just 23 at
the time, spent the days before the march
gathering fruit and vegetables at her home
in Commercial Street to hurl at the fascists.
Family folklore suggests that fruit wasnt
the only thing she was preparing as weapons
against the fascists. Im proud of what my
family did and, as the former director of HOPE
not hate, Im proud to follow in their footsteps.
In our collective fight against the politics of
hate, the greatest weapon I ever found was the
tolerance, respect and common bonds that
hold our communities together.
That, and occasionally a table leg.

On Sunday a noisy, colourful march of

more than one thousand people, started
at Aldgate and wended its way through
the East End, culminating in St Georges
Gardens, to mark the 80th anniversary
of the Battle of Cable Street.
The diverse marchers were made up of
trade unionists, local Labour parties from
Golders Green to Tower Hamlets - BAME
groups, Irish associations, Far Left groups and
even a Yiddish marching band! I was proud
to march alongside fellow members of the
Jewish Labour Movement under quite easily
the largest banner at the event, emblazoned
with JLMs white Magen David logo on a red
background. We gathered to recognise the
contribution of our predecessors - parents,
grandparents and great-grandparents - who
stood up to the fascists and to learn Cable
Streets lessons for today.
At the rally I spoke as JLM vice-chair alongside Max Levitas, Cable Street veteran, Jeremy
Corbyn, and writer, Michael Rosen and others,
next to one of Londons most striking pieces
of street art, a giant mural commemorating 4
October 1936.

That day Jews, Irish dockers, Labourites

and Socialists put racial and political differences aside and came together to prevent
Mosleys British Union of Fascists from
marching through the Jewish neighbourhood.
I spoke about Cable Streets special place
in British Jewish history. Mosleys decision
to march in the East End was deliberate. The
BUFs anti-semitism echoed European fascism.
When they needed someone to blame for societys problems, they chose the Jews.
That is why it was so important for the JLM,
the inheritors of Cable Streets legacy, to participate in the anniversary parade. JLM, formerly
known as Poale Zion, was established to
organise a political movement of Jewish people
within the Labour Party. In 1936 it was part
of the Jewish Labour Council which brought
together Jewish trade unionists, socialists and
labor Zionists, to take a more active approach
to opposing fascism.
More than 50 Jewish Labour activists
and many more allies from across the Party
marched with pride and purpose. There was
singing led by ex-youth movementniks, of Ose
Shalom, Hatikvah and even a rendition of Adon
Olam to the tune of the Red Flag!
Today, memory is giving way to history. The
social and political way of life of the Jewish
East End has all but disappeared.
Yet, the idea of the East End continues to
inspire people, Jewish and non-Jewish alike,
committed to a universal understanding of
social justice. It serves as a powerful reminder
that ordinary people can and must stand up
against racism, hate and antisemitism wherever we find it, including within our own ranks.

criticised
for sharing a stage
with Ismail Patel,
who has been
accused of supporting a Palestinian sheikh found guilty of blood libel.
Crispin Blunt, who is also the MP for Reigate, attended a fringe meeting at the Conservative Party Conference organised by
Friends of Al-Aqsa (FoA), based in Leicester.
He spoke alongside Hannah Stoddart,
director of advocacy and communications
at War Child, and Ismail Patel, chair of FoA,
who has caused concern with his support for
Sheikh Raed Salah, who runs the northern
branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel.
However, the MP told Jewish News: While
I was unaware of this controversy before the
meeting and a basic Google search didnt
reveal it at the time chairing a meeting does
not amount to endorsing the panellists views,
not least when they are set to present different
viewpoints in a debate.
Additionally, I prefer an approach that
engages with controversial speakers and provides an opportunity for accountability. There

new shadow justice minister will be an MP who
seemed to compare the plight of Palestinians in
Gaza with those of Jews in the Holocaust.
The MP for Bolton South East, Yasmin
Qureshi, promoted to Corbyns shadow cabinet this week, is remembered by many for her
remarks on Israelis and Palestinians in February 2014, in which she appeared to draw parallels with the Shoah. On the Holocaust, she said:

A London man has been fined
and banned from driving for the
next 15 months after continuing
to drive 60 miles after a car crash
to get to his destination in time
for the start of Shabbat.
Jehoshua Gross, 27, was
heading for north Wales on 29 July,
when he collided with a truck. His
Honda Civic sustained severe frontend damage. He drove on the
hard shoulders of four major roads
to avoid heavy traffic and parts of

Shneur Odze, 35, from Salford,

Antiques tribute
Rabbis make
refugee plea
The BBCs iconic flagship

programme, Antiques Roadshow, is teaming up for the
first time with the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation
(UKHMF) to mark Holocaust
Memorial Day next January.
In a special edition of the
programme, to be filmed next
month, the Roadshow team
will look at artefacts from
the Holocaust with the aim of
exploring the stories behind
them.

of the UKHMF, has already
conducted a number of interviews with British Holocaust
survivors and camp liberators, many of whom were
speaking for the first time.
Some of these interviews will
be included in the January
programme.
Now the Roadshow hopes
to uncover many more stories
from survivors and their families. In a rare break with the
traditions of the programme,
the BBC has decided that
items will not be valued.
UK rabbis have joined leaders of other faiths in

urging Theresa May to allow almost 400 refugee
children as young as eight years old into the UK.
The 397 youngsters live in the notorious
camp in Calais, nicknamed the Jungle because
of its dire conditions, but the makeshift town of
9,000 people is slated for demolition before the
winter by French authorities.
Senior Reform Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner
joined several bishops and the general-secretary
of the Muslim Council of Britain, Harun Rashid
Khan, in calling for urgent government action.
They said the children have fled conflict and
persecution, are now stuck in northern France,
deeply traumatised, and are at great risk, noting
that the anti-slavery commission May herself
appointed had recently concluded likewise.
We are now just days away from the start
of demolition, they said, adding that the camp
was a stain on the conscience of France and
Britain but in haste to clear it, the need to protect children is even more paramount.
During the last demolition, charities said 129
children went missing, and children are turning
to smuggling gangs amid frustration with official routes for claiming asylum. The group of
200 Christian, Muslim and Jewish clerics urged

people come forward with
material from labour camps
or ghettoes, or perhaps keepsakes that those fleeing the
Nazis brought with them to
Britain.

Jewish families during World
War Two. They have included
jewels buried by families
fleeing the Nazis and even
a ring a Holocaust survivor

Report reveals shocking

abuse in Stamford Hill
A new study this week shone a light on
the shocking daily racist abuse suffered by Orthodox Jews in areas such as
Stamford Hill.
Following a month-long investigation, Shomrim reported 32 incidents
which it claims were anti-Semitic,
including an eight-year boy beaten up on
his way home from school and another
forced to remove his kippah under
threat.
In the review, it also recorded a
woman who was jeered and a group
of Jewish women chased through
the streets by a gang of teenage girls
shouting racist abuse.
Most incidents took place in Hackney
and Haringey, and security volunteer
group Shomrim said the results were
the tip of the iceberg, with widespread
acknowledgement that there is underreporting of abuse.
In the Governments most recent
Hate Crime Action Plan, published
in July, the Home Office noted that
Jewish people from the Charedi community are less likely than other sections of the Jewish community to report

hate crimes to the authorities.

Rabbi Herschel Gluck, president of
Stamford Hill Shomrim, said: It has
long been said that anti-Semitism is
under-reported in the Charedi community, which is the most visible segment of
the Jewish community, but these figures
are nevertheless shocking, even more so
since this is only the tip of the iceberg.
The Community Security Trust
(CST) recorded 379 anti-Semitic incidents in Greater London in the first six
months of this year, but of these, only 40
were in Hackney.
Mark Gardner, CST communications
director, said: Last year we recorded
over 160 examples of visibly Jewish
members of the public suffering antiSemitic incidents, so there is no doubt
that this problem needs addressing.
Bouattia offers
to talk with UJS
The National Union of Students
president has offered to meet
with Jewish representatives.
Malia Bouattia [pictured],
who has been accused of
failing Jewish students,
sent a request to the Union
of Jewish Students asking to
arrange talks.
The NUS told Jewish News:
Malia sent UJS a letter on 30
September, asking to meet
with the union and offering
several dates when she would
be available. UJS confirmed
the letter was received,
but a meeting has yet to be
arranged.
UJS said the meeting will
be used to address concerns
of Jewish students regarding
anti-Semitism in the movement.
The news comes after a
turbulent period for Jewish
students, following Bouattias
election earlier this year.
She caused upset after
refusing to apologise for
describing Birmingham University as something of a
Zionist outpost in an article

she co-authored.
Last week, student leaders
across the country took aim
at Bouattia, saying Jewish students had been undermined
under her leadership.
In an open letter, 28 union
presidents and vice-presidents joined 10 members of
the NUS National Executive
Committee, three NUS vicepresidents as well as NUS
representatives in Scotland
and Wales, in a fiery open
letter of complaint.

Community leaders have condemned an outrageous discussion that was due to take place
today at a London university, in which students are told about decoupling Judaism and
Zionism.
Activists at the SOAS Palestine Society
plan to examine the borderline between
Judaism and Zionism in the debate over
Israel-Palestine, which Jewish community
leaders claim is an attempt to redefine antiSemitism.
Students will be told about the role
of Jewish allies in the struggle for justice
for Palestinians, whether anti-Zionism
is indeed anti-Semitic, the link between
Zionism and anti-Semitism, and where to
draw the line between combating the weap-
onisation of anti-Semitism and identifying

real instances of anti-Semitism.
Board of Deputies Vice President Marie
van der Zyl said: It is outrageous that any
outside group would take it upon themselves
to redefine anti-Semitism for hostile political ends. For the vast majority of British
Jews, political, cultural and religious affiliation with the state of Israel is a fundamental
part of their Jewish identity.
She added: In suggesting that this is
somehow a politicised or contrived relationship is outrageous. We utterly condemn
this event and give our full support to SOAS
Jewish Society and the Union of Jewish Students in standing up for the rights of Jewish
students.
DEBATE IS DELAYED
DUE TO YOM KIPPUR
FILM FESTIVAL EVENT

HELD ON KOL NIDRE
A pro-Palestine student event scheduled for

Kol Nidre was been postponed by a leading
university.
Entitled How Can Palestine be Free?, the
talk was set to be held at Manchester University
Students Union, before the institution delayed
it citing concerns over a perceived lack of balance. Hosted by the Socialist Worker Student
Society, it was scheduled to begin half-an-hour
before Yom Kippur, excluding Jewish students.
A university spokesperson told Jewish News
the event was pulled as it had the potential
to breach the code of practice on freedom of
speech. All parties involved should have the
chance to express their views, which Jewish students would not have been able to do on account
of the scheduling. A new date is yet to be set.
An event to promote the opening night movie at

this years UK Jewish Film Festival was held on
Kol Nidre.
Journalists were invited to attend the preview
screening of Indignation, UKJFs choice for its
opening night gala, for 6.30pm on Tuesday night.
The film, directed by James Schamus, is based
on Philip Roths 2008 novel of the same name and
tells the story of Marcus (Logan Lerman), the
gifted son of a kosher butcher from Newark, who
is swept off his feet by blonde bombshell Olivia
(Sarah Gaddon).
Vertigo Releasing, the PR firm representing
UKJF, said: We havent arranged this screening
and it is not the official festival screening. This is
a screening organised by the UK distributor of the
film for select press.

Blind shoppers
anger at butcher
A blind man said he suffered discrimination in
kosher butchers in Radlett, after being told he
could not enter the shop with his guide dog.
Kelvin Sheridan, who relies on his dog Mia,
tried to enter the branch of Ivor Silverman on
Sunday, but said he was left angry and upset
after repeatedly being asked to leave.
The member of staff behind the counter
said to me you will have to take the dog out,
said Sheridan. I said she is a guide dog. He still

said that I had to leave. I told him it is against
the law to discriminate.
Ivor Silverman owner Steven Grossman
said: We dont allow dogs because there is open
exposed meat, but you cant discriminate on the
basis on disability, so there is a balance. We always offer to help people who need assistance,
and I have personally stood outside before with
owners dogs. Grossman said Sheridan already
had assistance, because he entered the shop
arm-in-arm with a woman who was helping
him. Because of this, he said he did not believe
the shop acted inappropriately.

release from prison next Passover to
be at home with their family.
Parliamentary Under-Secretary
of State for Justice Sam Gyimah
revealed the new in response to

for prisoners temporary release,
alongside Diwali and Eid.

X Factor hopeful Honey
G officially took over the
internet this week, as fans
continue to debate whether she is a
true pop culture phenomenon or
just a clever hoax.
The Jewish rapper, also known as Anna

Gilford, a middleclass, former competitive
tennis player from Harrow, stormed her way
through to the next round of the popular
ITV talent show on Saturday night with her
rendition of California Love by Tupac.
Since then, the 35-year-old who is being
mentored by Sharon Osbourne has been
the talk of the town on social media.
Honey G has been spotted rapping
alongside former X Factor contestant Stacey
Solomon, who is also Jewish, while previous
winner Sam Bailey paid her own homage to
the budding star. Donning sunglasses, a baseball cap and a tracksuit, Bailey posted a video
on Twitter and exclaimed: Ill give Honey a
run for her money!
Meanwhile Honey G, who away from the
stage runs her own recruitment company,
penned an original rap for Piers Morgan,
which for once left the normally outspoken
television personality lost for words.

conspiracy theories about Honey G, with
people divided over whether she is genuine,

may even go on to win the show, having slashed
her odds to 12-1 from 50-1. It could well be a
sweet new year for Honey G after all.

Jerusalem gunman
The Foreign Office has utterly
condemned a terrorist attack
in Jerusalem that left two
people dead.
The a 39-year-old killer
sped towards a busy stop on
the citys light rail service and
opened fire on Sunday, seriously wounding a 60-year-old
female passenger. He then
continued driving and shot
another woman sitting in her
car, before speeding
off towards an Arab
neighbourhood in
East Jerusalem.
Police officers on
motorcycles chased
the assailant, who
eventually stepped
out of his vehicle
and opened fire at
them. Yosef Kirma,
a 30-year-old police
officer, was critically wounded
in the shoot-out.
A separate police force
ultimately shot and killed the
attacker, a man from the East
Jerusalem neighbourhood of
Silwan.

Development, Priti Patel, has acted quickly to challenge a longstanding abuse of well-intentioned international aid money.
Labour Friends of Israels Ian Austin MP said the news ends
months of procrastination and denials about the end recipients of aid money, adding: The Department for International
Development appears finally to have accepted that aid to the PA
cannot continue for so long as it engages in anti-Semitic incitement and remains the ultimate paymaster of salaries to convicted terrorists.
Board of Deputies senior vice-president Richard Verber said:
We have long been concerned by DfIDs assertion that British
tax money does not fund terrorism and incitement.
JLC chief executive Simon Johnson said the decision reflects
the worst fears of many within the Jewish community, adding:
It is vital that the government is robust in ensuring funds are

We Believe in Israel director Luke Akehurst said he was
delighted, adding: After years of grassroots campaigning, the

From taxpayers
to the terrorists
It feels strange to celebrate the governments decision to freeze funding to the
Palestinian Authority, because like so many things it is not black and white.
It is obviously bad that British taxpayers money pays convicted Palestinian
terrorists (if it does), so it is obviously good that this has now stopped, pending
an investigation. The decision to do so seems a little late in coming, but we
welcome the new International Development Secretarys choice to bite the
bullet and launch an immediate inquiry.
The idea that welfare payments to Palestinian convicts actually rise if that
convict has killed Israelis is odious, to say the least.
But it is equally obvious that it is never good when millions of pounds in aid
money suddenly stops flowing into one of the worlds poorest regions. Nobody
doubts that the vast majority of Palestinian recipients need it, nor that they
did anything harmful to be denied it. The British Jewish communitys quarrel
is not with them. It is with the PLOs apparent system of encouraging and
rewarding acts of terror with higher payments made up of aid money.
Before the cash flows again, there are grey areas to consider. For instance,
while the money should never go to the terrorist, could it go to the terrorists
young family, if that family did nothing wrong? Is it right to punish the convicts
children to punish the convict? It is morally uncomfortable, just as it is to
demolish the houses of terrorists families. There are arguments on both sides.
The British government must quickly find the answers to these questions,
before communicating them to the PLO, building in better checks in the West
Bank and Gaza, and concluding the process as soon as possible, so innocent
Palestinians do not suffer too much as a result.
Terrorists have already caused more than enough suffering to go around.

Contrary to Luke Akehursts blog
on jewishnews.co.uk [6 October],
the Labour Party is no longer a
home for the Jewish community.
As a staunch supporter in the
past and a member who remains
in contact with several MPs, I
regret that the party conference
cannot be summarised as good
and bad. The idea that zerotolerance can be replaced by
50 percent tolerance is just a
modern version of appeasement.

SIMILAR TROPES AGAINST IMMIGRANTS

THAT WERE ONCE USED AGAINST US JEWS
A society that works for
everyone. This was the main
message pushed by the
Conservative conference and
a slogan reiterated by Home
Secretary Amber Rudd (pictured) in her address.
However, her speech
targeted immigrant and
British minority communities.
It is undeniable, according
to her assertions, that the

education were

the lens of
immigration.
The sentiment
that most illustrated her frustra-

want them here.
Rudd has become involved
with numerous initiatives

rails against anti-Semitism,
yet repeats the same narratives that were so often used
to marginalise us
from our neighbours
and bar us from integrating upwards.

Your comprehensive coverage of the life

and times of Shimon Peres was heartwarming and richly deserved. It is a sad
truism that the good that people do is too
often unrecognised during their lifetimes;
only when heroes such as Peres pass
away do we have time to reflect on their
achievements.
What is interesting in Peres case is that
he had already come to be recognised as
a giant among men and his death served
simply to emphasise it.
Perhaps no other leader of the time
could have done what he did in attempting
to bring together the opposing factions,
only to have the ultimate prize elude him.
The sign of his greatness is that even
then he refused to give up, with the result
that we saw at his funeral as you so rightly put it, a peacemaker even in death.
Talk at times of loss inevitably turns to the legacy of the deceased. In the
words of opposition leader Isaac Herzog, Peres dream of an Israeli and Palestinian state living side by side with one another in peace will be implemented.
Let us hope it will be soon. There could be no greater tribute to Peres.

MURDER OF ANIMALS
With reference to Pamela Cohens letter, Slaughter is brutal shechita included, I was and still am horrified (Jewish News, 29 September 2016).
I am a hypocrite. I adore and love animals. I could not do anything to hurt an
animal ... yet I eat meat. When eating meat, I dont think that it was an animal.
Reading the description of cows waiting to be murdered has filled me with
horror, which I cannot ignore. I had thought animals were killed humanely but,
according to Pamela Cohen, this would not appear to be the case.
Id be grateful if someone could tell me anything different to ease my mind.

you have experienced it for yourself.
Like every other day in the week,
you are juggling countless demands
on your time. You have a hectic family
life and a multitude of professional
responsibilities. The phone seems to
be ringing constantly and important
emails from colleagues are relentless.
The noise and the pace of your day-today routine are no longer a surprise
thats just the way modern life is.
But then, in a matter of moments, it all
changes. A match is struck, two small flames
are lit and a unique serenity descends.
With a long, deep breath, the blessing is
recited and then you begin to feel it the
beauty of Shabbat.
That pressing concern which has been
troubling you all week at work can no longer
bother you and family members are no
longer distracted by the television or their
mobile devices.
You are surrounded by the people you
care about most. It is true to say there is no
experience quite like it.

ShabbatUK is back. And this year, our
aim is to add another very special element
to the experience of welcoming in Shabbat
the knowledge that for one week, more
people than ever before will be taking that
deep breath and lighting those candles.

Sharing Shabbat Art Gallery at Hendon
United Synagogue in north London, which
will feature artwork by Liora Rosenberg, a
talented young artist who tragically passed
away earlier this year there is so much
happening, and each event seems more
exciting and innovative than the last.
Similarly, the Great Challah Makes
captured our communitys imagination
once again. Last year we had an incredible
27 events nationwide.
This year, there are already plans for
twice that number and there is the potential for many more to come!

Rising to the challenge of

an affliction we all face

rowing old can sometimes seem a

little daunting. As the average age
of residents at Nightingale Hammerson increases to 90 years, so too
does ones susceptibility to dementia. It is
no exaggeration to say that we may all face
this affliction in some form or other as we
grow older.
Dementia can cause older people to feel
isolated and frustrated. It is the challenge
of a care-home charity such as Nightingale
Hammerson to re-ignite memories and create
a culture that enables a positive outlook for
residents and their families.
As our residents come to us much older,
more focus and preparation towards caring
for those with dementia has to be at the heart
of everything we do. The way we care for our
residents is always person-centred led by
their abilities, needs, interests and passions.
Research shows that the wellbeing of
people with dementia is strongly linked to the

environment in which they live. This informs
our redevelopment of Hammerson House,
which will allow us to broaden and deepen the
level of care we offer dementia patients and
provide even more residents with a home for
life in truly world-class facilities.
Although we never imagine that our
memories will fade or be taken away, this is
the cruel reality for many of our residents
with dementia.
We are doing everything we can to keep
those memories alive, including offering a
wide variety of therapies such as Namaste,
pet, music, reading, art, drama and pottery.
Research shows therapies such as these
can alleviate the symptoms of dementia and
reduce anxiety and agitation significantly ,
thereby reducing the need for medication and
improving the residents mood and awareness.
There are more than 850,000 people with
dementia in the UK, with numbers set to
rise to more than one million by 2025. It is
therefore not surprising that caring for those
with dementia has become a hot topic for

discussion over the past few months. What is
the best way to care for a family member with
dementia? How am I going to cope?
Many of our residents have led wonderfully creative lives and it is heartening to know
dementia need not be a stumbling block. For
example, we are currently celebrating the
work of one of our residents, Rosalind Fleck.
Her work charts the journey of her creative
talent from childhood, to adulthood and now
to later life living with dementia. She is one
example of how memories can be re-ignited
and moments recreated through art.
Many despair at the thought of putting a
family member into a care home. The very
concept conjures a variety of thoughts, not all

positive. The reality is Nightingale Hammerson care homes are anything but.
We provide properties that enable older
people to have a better quality of life while
ensuring they are part of a warm community
where they can receive first-class care and
emotional support.
This Jewish new year, we should let our
communities older people be our inspiration.
They are the very foundations of our society,
the roots planted in the ground.
We have a lot of lessons to learn and inspirations to take from the older generation and
I hope that these lessons can act as a springboard for us all.

Israel a beacon of economic

stability and prosperity

he big theme at the 2016 annual

meeting of the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington was inclusiveness. The
combination of Brexit, Donald Trumps
assault on the American presidency and
the rise of extremist parties across the
European Union has stimulated a great
deal of self-reflection.
Globalisation and open markets are
perceived as having benefited the elites. And
at the bottom of the economic scale, there has
been considerable progress in lifting the very
poorest out of poverty.
It is the squeezed middle, the traditional
working classes or blue-collar workers, who
have been left behind. This group fired up the
52 percent of Britons who voted to leave the EU
and gave succour even to Bernie Sanders and
Trump (sexual peccadilloes notwithstanding)
in the US elections of this year.
Israel, too, has its social cohesion problems.
Much of the wealth is concentrated in a few
hands. The top 10 percent in the society are
responsible for 27 percent of national output

and own 51 percent of the wealth.
The top one percent are responsible for 22.5
percent of income. Indeed, Israel and the United
States are the two advanced nations with the
greatest income disparities.
At the bottom end of Israeli society, poverty
is endemic among the Charedi, the Bedouin in
the Negev and Arab populations in northern
Israel. It is one of the great ironies that Israels
poorest town, Jisr Azarqua, sits cheek-byjowl with its richest, Caesarea where Prime
Minister Benyamin Netanyahu has a home.
Among the key reasons why the Israeli
government this year adopted a 25 percent
budget increase for Arab communities is
because it has been urged to tackle inequality by
both the IMF and the Paris-based Organisation
for Economic Co-operation and Development.
Its membership in both organisations is
seen as vital as the country seeks to curb global
boycott activity. Nevertheless, amid the geopolitical turmoil, the conflict and terror which is
blowing apart states all around it, Israel remains
a beacon of economic stability and prosperity.
The latest IMF World Economic Outlook
report forecasts an Israeli growth rise from 2.5
percent in 2015 to 2.8 percent in 2016 and to

three percent in 2017. Inflation will be negligible.
Israels current account, the combination of
its trade in goods and services with the rest of
the world, together with its foreign income on
investments, will be in surplus in 2016 and next
at 3.1 percent and 2.9 percent of gross domestic
product respectively. That ought to keep the
shekel strong and make it easier for Israel to
borrow, if necessary, on global capital markets.
Israels stability and strength contrasts with
that of other countries in its neighbourhood. A
strengthening of the oil price is starting to assist
some of the economies of the region. President
Barack Obamas nuclear deal with Iran, which
saw some sanctions lifted, has seen production rise to two million barrels per day, close to
the pre-sanction levels. Not very helpful given
Irans funding of global terrorist groups such as

Hezbollah currently fighting alongside President Bashar al-Assads forces in Syria.
But although the economies of oil-exporting
states are gradually improving, along with the
oil price, the region as a whole is economically
devastated. Geopolitical tensions, domestic
armed strife, and terrorism are taking a heavy
toll on several economies, the IMF observes.
It also notes that the Gulf countries have lost
hundreds of billions of dollars in revenues and
are having to adopt austerity policies as a result
of low oil prices over the last two years. The
weakness is unhelpful to regional stability in
that it encourages extremist movements.
Slow growth and social exclusion are
combining across the globe to produce deeply
disturbing political outcomes.

THIS WEEK: TAKING CRIME OUT OF CANNABIS
annabis is bad news, and about

as kosher as a bacon butty. Jews
should get high only on their
achievements and aspirations.
Forget the bongs and reefers. Jews are
instructed to be of good health in body
and mind, and to eschew indulgences.
Granted, more and more places around
the world may be decriminalising Mary
Jane smoked for pleasure, but this does
not mean that we should accept the weed
and its apathetic effects.
That should be the case no matter how
many giddy Israeli rabbis bless as kosher for
Passover the green leaves before them, as an
esteemed 88-year-old did recently.
Medical marijuana? Fine. Its arguably
a mitzvah. But pot as a pastime? Please! Its
neither recreational nor spiritual.
In the words of Yoseph Needelman, author
of Cannabis Chassidis: Pot alienates you from
your responsibilities and needs.
And, latching on to the inevitable analogy,
he adds:Its not like alcohol, which makes
you feel warm.

Jews should consider it forbidden fruit for
good reason. Lets keep our High Holy Days
more Holy than High. If you want a stimulant,
chocolates good.
Give the bong the boot, and stick to
LChaim, not LHigher.
BUT...
Others say thats yesterdays view. The worlds
a-changin. In years to come, well realise we
lived through one of historys most senseless
prohibitions. If a rabbi reacts with disgust to your
ganja confessional, remember that the advice is
context-dependent, i.e. its currently illegal here.
But context is everything. In the past,
rabbis were far more enthusiastic. It comes
down to place and time. Do you think the
19th or early 20th century Jews of Baghdad,
or Yemen or Morocco thought twice about
smoking a bit of top-drawer hashish?
Medical marijuana will force it full circle.
Israel already has eight approved cannabisgrowing companies, which will soon benefit
from exports worth hundreds of millions of

shekels, and next March, CannaTech, the
hugely successful International Summit for
Accelerating Cannabis Innovation, will be
held in Israel, a country dubbed ground zero
for cannabis research.
In contrast to the UK, where government
ministers plug their ears to the deafening
swell of sense, an Israeli committee of experts
is expected to recommend decriminalisation in the next two months. No one expects
social disintegration there as a result. Lets
take a leaf (ahem) out of the Israeli book. Long
known for it high-tech, it will soon be known
for its high tech. LChaim!

claim to a number of firsts. The
famous upmarket department store
in Duke Street, founded in 1707,
invented the worlds first (and-not-sokosher) Scotch Egg and was one of the first
stores to dispatch beef tea overseas to
British troops in the Crimea.
For the last month, the store can now also
mark up another first: a free pop-up show of
60 paintings lent by a Jewish art collector who
has been dubbed the Saatchi of the North.
Walking past Fortnums front-windows
facing the Royal Academy, you can see
ravishing paintings by Leon Kossoff and
Frank Auerbach, part of an extraordinary
collection garnered by Frank Cohen and his
wife, Cherryl over half a century.
I am delighted to be collaborating with
Fortnums on this exciting project and thrilled
that new audiences will have the opportunity to see my collection in such a wonderful
setting, says the flamboyant Cohen, who
looks amazingly young for his 72 years.
One of the UKs most important private
art collectors, Cohen raised 30,000 for
Manchesters Jewish Museum and has lent
his pictures to the Ben Uri Gallery, the Jewish
Museum in London and Chatsworth House.
So how did Cohen, who made his fortune
by founding a chain of DIY stores, start his
vast collection? As a child, the Manchesterborn art enthusiast tells me he loved to collect
cigarette cards, swapping them with the other

boys at school, and later coins.

His sense of entrepreneurism was fired
around the age of 15 when he left formal
education.
I started working the markets with
Howard Jacobsons father, Maxie, before
setting up my own business selling wallpaper
from the back of an old ambulance, he recalls
with a smile.
Later he opened Glyn Webb, a chain of
highly successful DIY stores across northern
England, where he met his wife, Cherryl, who
came to work for him.
Her father was an art dealer and she had
grown up surrounded by art.
It was my father-in-law, who was
chairman of the Fine Art Trade Guild and a
successful glass manufacturer and cabinet
maker, who gave me an education in art,
explains Cohen.
In 1970, the couple acquired their first
painting, a charming, small Lowry, titled Our
Family, for which they paid 1,100.
This purchase sparked Cohens passion
for collecting and from then on there was no
stopping him.
From the start the couple chose and
bought art together. Although many of their

artists are now world-acclaimed, this wasnt

always the case.
Cohen has often been ahead of the art
world he was buying Edward Burra in the
1970s, when he was little-known and before
his prices shot up.
I prefer to rely on my own judgement and
buy what I want to see on my walls. When I
discover an artist I like, I set out to buy every
piece I can find, says Cohen, who opened a
non-profit visual arts centre in Bloomsbury,
called The Dairy Centre.
This has included several leading Jewish
artists, including David Bomberg and his
former students Frank Auerbach and Leon
Kossoff - and you can see some of their best
works in the show.

store and a couple of Leon Kossoffs behind the
main cash desk on the ground floor.
Interestingly, much of the art Cohen
collects was created during his lifetime,
reflecting his own experience of the world he
grew up in.
He is particularly drawn to the 1950s
Geometry of Fear group of painters, including
Bomberg, Auerbach and Eduardo Paolozzi.
These artists were predominantly
working-class and influenced by the atmosphere of uncertainty of the Cold War world.
What do Cohens parents think about his
art collecting?
They probably wouldnt even know
what art was! answers Cohen with a broad
grin, referring to his father, who worked in a
factory.
In keeping with Cohens democratic spirit,
Fortnums installation places the artworks in
such a way that it encourages passers-by, from
all backgrounds, including street-cleaners and
people on the bus, to stop and take a look.
But it is inside the store that the true
beauty of his collection shines through.
Next year they will have to change their
name to Fortnum and Mason and Cohen, he
chuckles.

Israels going to pot

Dubbed ground zero for cannabis research, Israel now attracts the worlds
top marijuana researchers, suppliers and businesses. Stephen Oryszczuk looks
at how the 8billion industry is transforming medicine and, indeed, recreation
annabis The name sends shivers

down the spine of Daily Mail
readers. While not every Brit
foams at the mouth at its very
mention, most avoid the c word in polite
conversation. Not so in Israel. There,
cannabis is a wonderful thing. To Israelis,
it means a market, industry, innovation,
opportunity. They know this plant could
transform medicine and recreation in the
21st century, once governments get over
themselves and legalise it. And theyre
proud to be leading the revolution.
Lawmakers have helped, giving permits and
licences. Eight companies can grow cannabis
(compared to one in Britain) and restrictions
on others doing so have just been lifted. More
than 20 start-ups are working on its medical
applications, conducting governmentapproved trials, after universities hand over
their work. When something is shown to
work, doctors prescribe it, and centres and
pharmacies distribute it.
Israel has more than 26,000 patients using
cannabis-related drugs (compared to Britains
six) and this number is expected to be 150,000
in three years (second only to the United
States). All the while, Israeli regulators have
built a framework (nicknamed the Green
Book) that is the envy of the world. Dr Tamir
Gedo, chief executive at BOL Pharma and an
industry pioneer, describes it as 20 years

ahead of anywhere else.
Israels cannabis ecosystem brings
together regulators, patients, doctors,
investors, scientists, entrepreneurs, growers,
chemists and activists, and the start-up nation
with all its accelerators and incubators
knows how to get safe products quickly to
market. There are even specialist recruiters
for the industry. Headhunter Jackie Brown
says one of the first questions they ask is: Do
you really care about cannabis and its myriad
marvellous applications and potential, or do
you just think its cool to work with weed?
Dubbed ground zero for cannabis research,
the land of milk and Mary Jane, Israel now
attracts the worlds top marijuana researchers,
suppliers and businesses at two annual
summits (Cannatech, in March, and Cann10, in
September) where talk moves from agriculture
to genetics to medicine to commerce.
Exporting Israeli know-how is already well
underway. Israelis [in the cannabis industry]
operate everywhere, from Peru to South Africa
to Zimbabwe to Macedonia, says Clifton
Flack, co-founder of iCAN: Israel-Cannabis, an
investor. Every country is a link in the chain.
Over the next 10 years, a significant percentage
of cannabis regulation will be based on Israels
rules, Israels ideology, because its so welldeveloped already. All over the world will be
Israeli fingerprints.
In an estimated 8billion industry, where
no-one expects cannabis to remain illegal for
recreational use (four US states already allow
it, and 10 more are due to do so next year), the
projected figures are jaw-dropping. But it is the
plants possibilities for medical use where far

Eight companies are legally allowed to grow cannabis in Israel, where more than 26,000 patients use cannabis-related drugs

almost endless. Doron Ben Ami of Therapix
Biosciences says: Medical cannabis is just
starting to flourish. Everyones realised it is a
valued therapy, including the public. But its
at an early stage.
Work actually began more than 50 years
ago, when Israeli scientists such as professor
Raphael Mechoulam, began isolating and
synthesising the psychoactive (THC) and
pain-relieving components in cannabis. The
Ministry of Health checked I was trustworthy
then gave me 5kg of hashish, Mechoulam later
recalled. I carried it back [to the lab] on the bus,
where everyone could smell it!
Work since has shown that cannabis
can work wonders neurologically too, so it
is now known to help treat inflammation,
sleep disorders, indigestion, nausea and
stress, to name but a few, with trials showing
promising results for colitis, Crohns, dementia,
Parkinsons, tinnitus, dystonia and spasticity in
children with cerebral palsy and epilepsy.
This month, Israeli scientists at BOL began
their first cannabis trial on autism, and every
day there seems to be a new breakthrough.
At Therapix, trials on patients with
Tourettes and those with early-stage
Alzheimers are set to begin later this year. In
another area, Gedo says one of its treatments
(using 300mg of cannabinoids) was recently

All this focuses on Israels tiny domestic
market, but the real prize is the huge markets
outside Israel, in America and Europe, for

Ministerial reluctance, together with
onerous international rules around production
and shipping, has previously meant that Israels
cannabis has stayed in Israel, but when BOL
completes building work next year on (what

will be) the worlds largest production facility
dedicated to cannabis, that will all change.
With cannabis-related products set to shake
up other industries like food supplements,
cosmetics and medical devices, experts say
the potential is huge. It is remarkable how a
plant is sending shock waves and investment
tremors through established industries and
ecosystems, says Flack.
The opportunities it offers local economies,
together with the clear therapeutic and social
benefits, are as exciting as they are wide and
varied. Cannabis is the next big reason for
innovation.

we thought what better way to
explore the grand city of Montreal
than by climbing the 233-metre
Mont-Royal, for which the place is named?
A protuberance at the end of the street
and the citys winter playground, Mont-Royal
hovers over the city much like Arthurs Seat
towers over Edinburgh.
Montreals wintry scene is imbued with a
pronounced Gallic flavour. As a prelude to the
main event, a ramble around the charmingly
atmospheric Vieux-Montreal, the Old Town,
is just the ticket. The cobbled paving will tone
your muscles and the proliferation of pretty
French eateries both tempt the visitor and
enhance the Parisian ambience, transformed
by a gentle snow blanket into an impressionistic Monet canvas.
You can roam the winding lanes, drinking in
the atmosphere and then, to escape the chill, a
pit stop is suggested at the boutique Nelligan
Hotel. Here you can sip a latte or herb tea in
front of the welcoming fire. Alternatively, the
lunch menu in its plush restaurant overlooking
the main street bustle is exceptional value
While the Parc du Mont-Royal is a yearround walkers paradise, it is most alluring in
winter garb and a day or two should be set aside
for the various rambling and associated activities within its 494 acres.

YEAR-ROUND TREAT,
IT IS MOST ALLURING
IN WINTER GARB
New York Central Park fame and inaugurated
in 1876, its visible and easily accessible from
much of downtown.
Following an overnight deposit of the white
stuff, our approach took us past some handsome period stone houses before reaching
Chemin Olmsted, which offered a serpentine
gradual ascent and delivered us to the best
summit viewpoint, the Chalet du Mont-Royal.
More a greystone villa than a wooden
chalet in the Swiss sense, this is fronted by a
huge piazza (imagine a smaller-scale Vatican
Square coated lethally in a layer of ice) with
a semi-circular balustrade, the Kondiaronk
Belvedere, at the far end. And what a view!
All Montreal laid out before us the Olympic
Stadium with its leaning tower, the St Lawrence
Seaway flowing towards Quebec City and
the skyscrapers (yes, Montreal has these too,
although not as tall as, say, New Yorks).

warmth of the sun on our faces and suspending

our belief in the thermometers cold truth, then
follow a gorgeous snow path, the sun peeking
through the encircling tracery of hoar-frosted
branches. Here and throughout the summit
expanse, walkers cheerfully share the paths
with cross-country skiers and snowshoers.
Further on, theres tubing, a toboggan run
and even a short ski slope the snowfall has
spawned a hive of activity. If, at this juncture,
your limbs are aching and your body requires
defrosting, then youve timed it to perfection.
Maison Smith, built for a Boston merchant
in 1858, is an attractive location to break
your walk and its snug Caf des Amis offers
comforting home-made soups and inventively
fresh sandwiches. The path continues around
Lac des Castors, frozen and glinting, to the
lively skating rink at Le Pavillon, atmospherically attired in its seasonal best.
On a snowfall white-out day, we visit the
Montreal Holocaust Memorial Museum, an
overview of the rise and implementation of
Nazism, where exhibits include J-stamped
identity cards, yellow clothing stars and
inmates suitcases, often linked directly to
personal histories and survivor testimonies.
The museums ethos, to reflect on the destruction caused by prejudice, racism and anti-Semitism, is something the world sorely needs.
You can also spend a full day at the Olympic
complex, ascending the worlds tallest inclined
tower and visiting the Biodome indoor zoo,
planetarium and botanical gardens.
Montreal has plenty of local pasta joints,
but kosher eating is more problematical. As
in Chicago, you need to travel. Le Grill, at the
kosher Quality Hotel Midtown, has a varied

selection of menus la Golders Green but,
while the food was delicious, the dcor was
dated and the ambience non-existent. Our
boutique Hotel Le Crystal, however, more
than compensated, with concierge Mylene
embracing us as if long-lost friends.
After an active day walking and sightseeing,
it was wonderful to retreat to the cosy ambience of our luxury suite. The hotel also has its
own restaurant, offering an ethnic culinary
experience with local artisan-sourced produce.
Finally, an evening dip under the stars in
the rooftop hot tub, with gently cascading
snow crystals caressing your eyelids and with
far-reaching views towards the Mont-Royal,
supplies the perfect ending to the holiday.

Where to go pre-theatre often poses a problem, but last
week I went back probably 20 years since my last visit
to Joe Allen. Everything was familiar yet different.
My theatrical outing started with a plush, red, drawn
back curtain opening on to a warmly lit room. It is softened with a golden glow yet now it has been zhuzhed
and everything looks sharper and smarter.
Before the menu even arrived, I was overcome with
a longing for a hamburger. I read over the menu it

on the menu? No. But can I have
one? Yes. But Ill have to call over...
Someone Who Deals With This.
To the tables astonishment, a
second waiter was brought over
to explain, with obviously wellrehearsed patience, that it was Joe
Allens Big Secret. There really was a
hamburger in the house, but it wasnt
on the menu and has to be requested.

I could already hear my dear old Dads
words the next day, This? This you
call a secret? A hamboyger? Feh! Keep
your great restaurant secret shmecret.
The food was so good. Not just averagely good, but up there with all the other
great hamburgers of my life good. In a
brioche bun. Accompanied by crunchy
and fluffy frites. Other favourite dishes
included beautifully cooked calves liver
and creamy mashed potatoes, perfectly
spiced chilli con carne with guacamole,
mac and cheese. For dessert, my companion had baked plums, faintly spiced
with nutmeg and cinnamon, while I had
one of the best pecan pies of my life.

restaurant (since 1997), the Bluebird
building has housed an ambulance
station and a fashion market.
Not exactly new but a totally new

look! To celebrate its impending
20th birthday, the iconic Bluebird
on the Kings Road has given its
first-floor restaurant and bar a
complete revamp. Its light, bright
and wonderfully spacious, with
a stunning central bar and trees,
plants and wild flowers creating an
indoor/outdoor exotic garden feel
right in the middle of Chelsea.
New head chef Liam Smith-Laing
has modernised the menu, neatly
peppering it with small plates (bringing it into line with almost every other menu in London). His view is that
this reflects that fact that Bluebird is
such a great place to socialise.
There is an extensive and inventive
cocktail list, with prices starting

at a relatively modest (considering the location) 10, while
the menu is divided into snacks,
small plates, pasta/vegetarian,
fish, meat and grill. We started
with crispy duck salad and BBQ
quail with guacamole and steak
tartare, followed by charred
Cornish mackerel with borlotti
beans (me) and tender daube of
beef (him). Desserts are good
value at 6 and include spiced
apple crumble or hot molten
chocolate with a crunchy pecan
topping and milk ice cream.

Q We lived in Israel for
years, where it was never a

problem to get antibiotics
for a sore throat or infection
straight away. Here, we are
just left to suffer. Why does
our GP here not treat us?
Your GP here is doing exactly the right

thing.
The truth is you dont actually need antibiotics for a sore throat: most sore throats
are caused by viruses, and antibiotics only
help infections caused by bacteria.
The common winter infections that
people suffer with like coughs, colds, sore
throats and tummy bugs do not require
antibiotics and rushing to take them causes
huge problems. Giving you an antibiotic

you dont need means you will then be
resistant to that antibiotic for a while:
that could be very dangerous if you have
a very serious infection and need them.
We now have a massive global problem
of antibiotic resistance and it is predicted
that the time will come soon when we
wont be able to use antibiotics for infections we treat now, because they will no
longer work. The situation is made even
more serious by the fact very few new antibiotics are being developed as they are not
a good money-spinner for drug companies.
GPs in the UK have cut back vastly on
antibiotic prescribing in the past few years
and we are hoping other countries will
follow suit. For a sore throat, treat yourself
instead with paracetamol, anaesthetic
throat sprays and plenty of rest. It can
take a week to ten days to clear up.
Q My daughter is five
months pregnant and I was

surprised to hear her midwife
wants her to have a flu jab.
Surely vaccinations arent
safe in pregnancy?
Flu is not simply a bad cold: it is actually a

very serious illness that in certain groups
such as the under-fives and pregnant
women can lead to hospitalisation.
Flu is particularly dangerous in pregnancy: in fact, a woman who is pregnant
is seven times more likely to die from flu
than if she wasnt pregnant.
Vaccinating protects against the current
circulating strains of flu to protect her and
her unborn baby. It also means she is less

likely to pass on flu to her baby after birth
and in the first few months of the babys life.
So all in all its a good idea.
As far as having a vaccination when
pregnant: the safety record is proven to be
good. The flu vaccine is not a live vaccine:
that means she is not being injected with
active virus but rather parts of the virus
to trick her immune system into making
protective antibodies.
So if she comes into contact with flu,
her body will be prepared to fight it before
she becomes ill. Vaccination in pregnancy
is not just limited to flu: she will also have
been offered a whooping cough vaccination while pregnant.
This is hugely important to protect
her newborn from the current rise we are
seeing in this infection: I would totally
recommend she has that one too!

Q Food allergies seem so
common. Everyone I invite

over for a meal seems to
have an intolerance. How
careful do I have to be with
the food? Surely they are
just being fussy?
There is certainly a growing trend in

gluten-free, dairy-free, this intolerance and
that intolerance. Many people opt into this
fad because they genuinely feel better by
avoiding these products. It is likely these
people have an intolerance: what this means
is that eating a certain amount of that
specific food causes symptoms whether it
be abdominal pain, skin rashes, bloating or
nausea. Often these are not medically diagnosed but it is still perfectly valid for people
to want to avoid these symptoms: they have

likely discovered this intolerance through
an exclusion diet, realising they feel better
without that food.
If they did eat the wrong food, they
would have symptoms but no serious
problems. Other people simply opt into the
gluten-free or dairy-free lifestyle because
they believe it to be healthier: an idea not
backed by medical science unless you have
genuine allergies. With a genuine food
allergy such as a nut allergy the body
actually has an immediate allergic reaction
with hives, throat swelling and life-threatening breathing difficulties. This can be fatal
and is very fast.
This really is a serious medical issue and
people with genuine food allergies cannot
even tolerate their food being slightly
contaminated with the offending food. The
safest thing to do is to check whether it is an
allergy and how careful you have to be.

Dr Joseph Davar, consultant cardiologist at the Royal Free
Hospital, talks to Deborah Cicurel about his rewarding career
s a challenging and prestigious

career, being a cardiologist no
doubt has its trials but as one
leading doctor has shown, the
job has its many rewards too.
Dr Joseph Davar, a consultant cardiologist at
the Royal Free Hospital, and an honorary senior
lecturer at UCL, has worked as a cardiologist
for more than 30 years, travelling everywhere
from Georgia to Russia as part of his studies and
publishing papers, chairing committees and
supervising research projects in the process.
But Dr Davar had not always dreamed of
being a cardiologist: it was in his third year of
medical school that he knew what he wanted to.
The cardiovascular unit of a student
research facility was one of the first to be opened
and I started to participate in experiments, he
explains. In the fifth year, I became the head of
a student research team studying the effects of

different types of surgery on the heart.
But my eureka moment came when I
saw the living, beating heart of a patient on the
screen of an ultrasound machine.
I was fascinated by the ability to look into
the heart and assess what was wrong without
causing any harm to the patient. It was at this
time that my lifelong affair with cardiology and
imaging started.
Dr Davar has seen a great range of heart problems, but the advice he gives to young people
to help them prevent future issues has been
consistent. Cultivate healthy habits, as habits
tend to persevere throughout life. Enjoy regular
physical activity and enjoy the taste of water
rather than sugary drinks, he says. Realise
that a diet full of vegetables and fruit but more
vegetables is healthier, and far more nutritious

than high fat and sugary snacks. Avoid smoking
and watch your alcohol consumption. Try to
reduce the time spent at the computer, tablet and
in front of the television its much more interesting to live than to watch how others do it.
I ask Dr Davar whether heart problems are
predetermined are they preventable or mostly
genetic? The answer is both.
Many health problems, including cardiological ones, are due to a combination of genetic
and environmental factors, he says.
Controlling or modifying certain environmental factors, especially from a young age,
by diet and physical activity could definitely
contribute to avoid or lessen the impact of the
genetic database we are born with.
And what of the stresses of modern life?
Surely our fast-paced lifestyles, crazed schedules and inability to switch off are factors in
causing heart problems?
There are many factors contributing to the
high prevalence of hypertension and stress is
one of them, Dr Davar says.
The perception of a hectic lifestyle, or an
almost constant lack of time, leads to certain
traits such as sleep deprivation, unhealthy diets
high in salt, sugar and processed food and low
levels of physical activity. Subsequently, theres
a higher prevalence of people with a raised body
mass index, especially those with a high waist
circumference, diabetes and so on, all contributing to the development of hypertension.
Its not all bad news. We can prevent development or reverse some of the effects of high blood
pressure and heart problems if we modify our
lifestyles, according to the doctor. The main
issue to highlight is that it is possible to change
aspects of ones life to try to prevent the development of hypertension.
What is important is to realise that by
walking a reasonable amount every day, paying
attention to our weight, salt, sugar and overall
calorie intake, we can reduce significantly the
chance of developing many cardiac problems.
So is the Jewish community at any greater
risk of developing heart issues than the rest
of the population? There are certain types of
genetically-determined conditions somewhat
more prevalent in selected groups of the Jewish
population and could involve the heart, Dr
Davar says. Plus, traditional Jewish cuisine can
be quite fatty, sugary and salty. My grandmother
cooked a delicious chicken soup, but also used
chicken fat to roast and fry potatoes.
However, despite what our Shabbat dinner
tables may look like, Dr Davar believes the
community is healthier than ever. Overall, the
Jewish population has become well aware of the
benefits of a healthy and balanced diet, he says.
While Dr Davar faces daily challenges in his
work, it has its rewards especially when he
knows how medicine has helped to transform
lives. To see a patient who had a serious and
complicated course of illness walking along the
street and smiling is most rewarding, he adds.

What does the Torah say about Succot in the Calais Jungle?

A recent election and a referendum for Britain

to remain in the European Union were decided,
in part, on the back of refugees entering this
country via an illegal tent town in Calais. That
town is dubbed the Calais jungle for its impoverished condition. Last month, French President Francois Hollande vowed to remove the
9,000-strong population of migrant refugees
to reception centres. So what would the Torah
say about the Calais Jungle and how does
this relate to the upcoming festival of Succot?
When the Israelites left Egypt, they set up
a settlement just over the border. This massive
population of refugees set up a tent city called
Succot. According to one opinion, the very
reason for the festival of Succot, Tabernacles,
In the days leading up to the declaration of

independence of the State of Israel in May
1948, there was much debate surrounding
the wording of the text.
One major issue was over the inclusion of
God in the last section of the document, with
the draft using the phrase and placing our
trust in the Almighty. In the end, the phrase
Rock of Israel was used, which could be
interpreted as referring to God or Israel.
Indeed, it is in this weeks sedra that God
is referred to as a Rock, in a verse that will be
familiar to many from the funeral service.
The Rock, His work is perfect, for all His
ways are justice (Devarim 32:4). However
the Hebrew world, tzur has a number of
other connotations as well. When used as a
verb, it can mean to besiege a city or to put
it in straits, through exercising power through
defining and confining the area. It also carries the additional meaning of to shape or
to form and in modern Hebrew, an artist
is a tzayar. When used as a noun it has yet
another meaning, unchanging stability and
hardness that overcomes all other material.
Israel knows God is its ever-lasting support.
It is similarly Gods will that the nation commit themselves to the Torah.

is to celebrate the ad-hoc settlement made of
temporary materials. This fragile and run-down
town is, to this day, the symbol of freedom from
oppression and independence of the enslaved.
Like the refugees in Calais, our ancestors
were not all happy and healthy for living in
Succot. Their fragile condition boosted by hope
for better days meant that sometimes they
ran amok, or attempted to make a break for it
and storm or sneak into the Promised Land in
manners unlawful to them. Meanwhile, Moses
cared for them and God provided them with
food, medicine, love and support. Many of my
friends have travelled over to clothe, feed and
support the desperate of Calais.
Here in Lancashire and Liverpool we operate
interdenominationally to look after people separated from their loved ones in Sudan, Eritrea,
Syria and Iraq.
For 2,000 years Jews have had to flee from
country to country. My great-grandfather left
the pogrom-infested Pale of Settlement in the
1890s. My mother fled the aftermath of the
Arab Revolution in Tunisia in the 1960s. My
wife is from Crypto-Jewish families who struggled for five centuries to keep their faith in the
shadow of the Inquisition. Despite settlement
of many centuries in Europe, Africa and the
Americas, they were treated as strangers and

outcasts, just for being Jewish.
Succot, the symbol of temporariness on
earth, celebrates the struggle of the migrant
and the refugee by constructing a weak roof and
enough walling to keep out the draughty winds.
The prophet Zachariah describes how
the nations of the world will be judged and
punished severely if they do not ascend to
Jerusalem to celebrate Succot.
At first glance, a punishment for the nonobservance of Succot by non-Jews seems odd.
However, Succot is a universal recognition of
taking care for the Jew, and the non-Jew, on the
run from terror and oppression a task which
obligates all of humanity.

Its suggested in the Talmud that the
first question one gets asked on arriving
at the Heavenly Tribunal is this: Did you
conduct your business honourably?
The ethical dont suffer public embarrassment. We often dont know who they
are because they dont crave adulation. For
those who see standards as flexible, and,
like Allardyce, relish attention, the risk of
humiliation on a grand scale is perennial.

falling trees, boiler breakdown
and burst pipes are just some
of the potential perils property
owners can suffer during the
unpredictable winter months.
You are right to take action now
so that you are prepared for
winter, whatever the weather.
This will help reduce the chance
of a small issue developing into a
bigger and more expensive one.
Firstly, it is crucial that
you have the right insurance;
landlords need specialist
insurance, while homeowners
need both buildings and
contents insurance. Of course,
insurance is not a substitute for
carrying out repairs before
winter hits, make good any
defects to outbuildings, clear

gutters and drains and replace
loose roof tiles.
It is also a good idea to lag
pipes now, to reduce heat loss
and stop them from freezing. You
could also bleed your radiators
with a radiator key to release
trapped air and allow the heat
to circulate. It is worth getting
your boiler serviced by a Gas
Safe registered engineer (a legal
requirement for landlords),
before temperatures drop.
In the event of an emergency,
you will need to know where the
mains water stopcock and gas
supply is located so you can turn
them off.
Landlords should also make
sure that their tenants have this
information and know who to
call if there is an emergency.
I hope you can avoid that this
year by taking some of these
precautions.

One of the upsets of Sundays Cyril Anekstein
Cup action saw Division One side Redbridge
B win 2-1 at Premier Division side Woodford
Wanderers, thanks to strikes from Adam
Goldman and Craig Sandford.
Last years runners-up Oakwood A suffered
a penalty shoot-out defeat to Camden Park,
while Faithfold A are also out, as they were
beaten by fellow Division One side Finchley
City 4-2, thanks in no small part to Oli Sades
hat-trick, together with Josh Azizs strike.
Brady won an all-Premier Division clash as
Reiss Mogilners double helped them to a 6-1
win at SPEC. Nathan Harrod, Ben Kohler, Marc
Rister and Jordan Nathan also all scored.
Other Premier Division sides into the next
round are Raiders A, who beat LEquipe 9-0,
thanks to doubles from David Cohen, David
Dinkin and Matt Stock, together with strikes
from Liron Mannie, Liam Stein and Ben Ellis.
Goals from Josh Harris, Zac Lewis and Avi
Korman saw Hendon A beat Real Hendon 3-0,
while strikes from Alex Bowman, Alex Taylor,
David Cohen, Sam Arghebant, Ben Goldberg,
Dom Cheniart and Sam Lewis saw London
Lions A beat Redbridge C 7-1.
There were four other all-Division One ties.

Los Blancos won 6-1 at Hendon B thanks to
Adam Hershs double, together with strikes from
Darern Russell, Jospeh Davis, Jeff Gross and
Joel Kutner.
Elsewhere, Jacob Richler Kleimans hat-trick,
together with efforts from James Abrams and
Rafi Bloom saw Oakwood B win 5-1 at Mill Hill
Dons.
Scrabble fought back from 2-0 down to
beat Raiders B 3-2, thanks to strikes from Adam
Waters, Dan Green and Josh Bharier, while Josh
Blooms hat-trick, coupled with goals from Benji
Weinberger and Ed Brafman saw London Lions
B beat Catford 5-1.
In an all-Division Two tie, Richard Fogelmans hat-trick helped Faithfold B to a 5-3 win
over Temple Fortune, Raphael Meyers and Dan
Abrams scored their other goals.
Division Two side RC UK FC were emphatic
6-0 winners over Brixton, Jonti Aremband and
Aaron Luftig scored two each, with Avi Mocton
and Dudi Edryei also on target.

NASCAR next driver Alon Day may have missed out on
winning the Elite 1 race at the Whelen Euro Series Finals
in Belgium, but he did lay his hands on a watch which he
won by securing the most pole positions over the course

The head of FIFA has said fixing football issues

between Israeli and Palestinian football is a
priority for the sports governing body.
Having seen the Palestinian FA threaten
to put forward a motion to expel Israel from
FIFA at their annual congress last year only to
withdraw it at the last minute, the Palestinian
Authority have more recently said they want
Israels Football League to drop six of its teams
that are located in West Bank settlements.
Planning to bring the issue up at FIFAs Executive Board in Switzerland later this week, they
claim their presence is illegal under FIFA rules.
The head of the Palestinian Football Association, Jibril Rajoub, said: The time is overdue
for FIFA to make a decision based on their
own statutes and Code of Ethics, practice and
values.

Israel kept alive their hopes of reaching the 2018 World

Cup in Russia, but poor performances in 2-1 victories
against Macedonia and Liechtenstein saw them booed
off the pitch by their own fans.
The two wins, in Macedonia and against minnows Liecchtenstein in Jerusalem, saw them move to within a point of
top spot in their qualifying group.
But manager Elisha Levy admitted theres plenty of room
for improvement from his side.
Urging supporters to have patience with his team, he said:
The important thing is that we picked up the points. I know
we need to improve, but this is just our third match of the
campaign and I think you need to be patient with this team.
Brighton & Hove Albion striker Tomer Hemed scored two

headers in Sundays win, which followed their victory over
Macedonia three days earlier, though only after the hosts
missed an injury time penalty.
Admitting the performances werent the best, Levy said: I
expected better from my team but football is not mathematics. We need to learn that we cant sit back after conceding
a goal.
Im sure that with time we will improve and it is always
better to work on your mistakes after a win. We need to
improve with every match and we will do everything to make
sure that will happen.
Captain Eran Zahavi came in for criticism before the two
games over his poor international goalscoring record, but
said: I dont have a monkey on my back. That is something that the media has created. I had a very good first half
without scoring. I think the criticism leveled at me hurts the

team even though it doesnt hurt me. I dont owe the media
anything. It is easier to criticise me because I play in China
now so all the rats are coming out. It doesnt matter if we won
2-1 or 8-1. I would be happy to play like this in Albania and
win again.
Israel currently sit in joint-second place alongside
Albania, on six points, with Spain and Italy a further point
ahead. Israels next game in the group sees them travel to
Albania on 12 November.
Football anti-Semitism will get worse

The Director of Kick It Out has said
she fears anti-Semitic abuse in football is only going to get worse and
cited the role social media plays in
allowing the abuse to take place.
Rosin Wood voiced her concerns

The evening, which was media
partnered by Jewish News,
featured a panel including football journalists Henry Winter
and Anthony Clavane, Jewish
footballer Joe Jacobson,
Brighton & Hove Albion
chairman Tony Bloom
and President of the
Board of Deputies, Jonathan Arkush.

Admitting there is a serious problem
with anti-Semitism in football, Wood
(pictured) said: For us [Kick It Out]
there is still a problem. As an organisation, we recognise that footballs come a
long way in the past 20 years, but we still
have a long way to go.
One of the biggest problems we have in
dealing with anti-Semitism and discrimination of all sorts is social media. The
anonymity that exists from behind
a keyboard means its becoming an
ever-increasing problem and its an
issue we all have to grasp. Theres no
easy solution, and I certainly dont
have the answer, but we have to
get the likes of Facebook and
Twitter to take this seriously
and do something about it.

We all have to work together on this,
fans, players, clubs, bodies and government. But I think were going to see more
of it and would be surprised if we didnt.
The evening was chaired by AADs
Jonathan Metliss, who said: The event
was a great success. The principal purpose
was to put the issue of anti- Semitism in
football back on the radar and community
map, and we succeeded.
Both the panel and audience acknowledged there was still a serious problem and
that much more should, and could, be done
by the relevant authorities to confront it.
Were here to act as a catalyst and a force
for change in combating anti-Semitism in
football and will be holding more events of
this nature in the foreseeable future.
