Hope all is going well in Los Angeles, and that the weather is better there than it is here in Chicago.
Mike, I just got a call from Mr. Supriono's office at the Wisma Group in Jakarta. He is still in Bangkok
at the moment and won't be returning to Jakarta until Monday evening, so obviously he'll be
unable to come to the meeting we had set up with him Monday afternoon. However, he'll be glad
to meet with you first thing Tuesday.
You should go ahead as planned and leave for Jakarta tomorrow, arriving Sunday. That way you
can spend Monday getting over your jetlag, and you'll be bright and fresh when you give the
presentation at the meeting.
Have a great trip.

Construction complete on new rail tunnel

Around 300 trains will be able to speed through

Gotthard's two tubes every day; at 250 kilometers
per hour (155 mph). The old railroad tunnel, the
15-kilometer-long Gotthard Tunnel, is located
much higher up the slopes of St. Gotthard. The
old tunnel is aging and narrow and can cope
with just a fraction of that capacity at less than
half the speed. It was nevertheless an amazing
engineering feat when completed 128 years ago.

The driving force behind the building of this

tunnel, which cost 9.8 billion Swiss francs (7.0
billion euros), is a wave of popular concern about

(C) To reduce pollution caused by traffic on

(D) To speed up the trip between Milan and

air pollution in the Alps caused by road traffic

crossing Switzerland. Some r.2 million trucks
a year currently pass through Switzerland's
mountainous countryside, endangering rare
plants and animals. In 1994, the Swiss voted to
limit future truck traffic and begin construction
of the tunnel even though the project would
cost Swiss taxpayers about 1,000 euros each.

fter 15 years of construction, the

monumental Gotthard Tunnel, deep
beneath the Swiss Alps, was completed
this year, clearing a path for a key railway link
between Switzerland and Italy. The 57-kilometer
(35.4-mile) Gotthard base tunnel will be part of
a rail network between northern and southern
Europe that will shift truck freight onto rail and
help relieve road traffic in central Switzerland
when it is fully open. Passengers and goods will
ultimately be able to speed from the Italian
city of Milan to Zurich in Switzerland in less
than three hours, cutting the journey time by
an hour. Eventually the network will extend
further north into Germany. The length of the
Gotthard Tunnel exceeds the 53.8-kilometer
Seikan rail tunnel linking the Japanese islands of
Honshu and Hokkaido.

Questions 181-185 refer to the following memo and e-mail.

FROM: Paula Woo, Office Manager, H & TTrading Company

TO: All employees of H & H Trading Company and Pacific Brands, Inc.
As you are no doubt aware, next month the merger of our two firms will be finalized. At that
time, the domain name for all of our e-mail addresses will change to@H&TPacific.com.
I've noticed that employees in both companies have been using various formats for their e-mail
addresses. Some employees are using first name+ last name (TomSmith), some last name+ first
name (SmithTom), and some are using initials (TSmith). Different dividers are being used as well:
a dot(.), a hyphen (-),an underscore U, or no divider at all.
I propose that we settle on a uniform format: first name+ last name divided by an underscore

L). This looks quite professional, and having a single e-mail format will make it easier for both
employees and clients to remember our addresses.
On Monday, we will have a joint staff meeting to discuss the allocation of office space in the new
corporate headquarters building. Perhaps we can discuss e-mail address formats then as well.

Change in e-mail addresses

Dear Paula:
I don't know if you remember me, but we met once or twice during the merger discussions. I am a
sales representative at Pacific Brands. I wanted to comment on your recent memo. While I agree that
having a single e-mail address format is a good idea, I think we need to be somewhat flexible about
it. I have been working for Pacific Brands for 15 years, and our clients and my colleagues know me
as J.J., not as Joshua James. If we format our e-mail addresses in the way you suggest, no one will
recognize my e-mails when they check their inboxes.
One other point: I think you should reconsider how names are divided in e-mail addresses. In our
system, e-mail addresses are automatically underlined, and so the divider will seem to disappear.
Regards,
J. J. McKey

Questions 186-190 refer to the following magazine article and letter.

Bicycing M
around
Paris

ost visitors to Paris spend at

least an hour a day riding
the Metro, but sometimes,
it's nice to come up into the open. Velib',
Paris's easy-to-use new bike service, lets
yo u spend less time underground and
more time outside.

by Anika Rosi

Since July 15, about 11,000 bikes

have been posted around town at 75 0
stations, and the numbers of both will
double by January 1. And good news!
The service is convenient for travelers,
not just Parisians, offering short-term
passes and directions in eight languages.
The basic idea of Velib' -from
velo (bike) and liberte (liberty)-is
convenience. You can grab a bike from

any station and return it at any other

station. The city tore up car lanes to
install bike lanes-annoying some
drivers, who complain that bike lanes
have slowed traffic.
An an nual pass costs 40 euros. For
short-term rentals, the first half-hour is
free; the next costs one euro. The third
half-hour costs two euros, and each
additional half hour costs four euros .
This sliding price scale keeps bikes in
rotation. If you want to take a long ride
in a park, it is cheaper to rent from a
private bicycle shop. But if you want to
see the art in the Louvre, go shopping
in Saint Germain, and then return to
your hotel, Velib' is your best option.

To the Editor:
I enjoyed Ms. Rosi's article about Velib' in last month's New Traveler. The improvements have helped , but
Paris isn't a paradise for bicyclists yet. There are still areas where cars definitely pose dangers to cyclists.
I also wish the author had mentioned that Paris is following other European cities such as Amsterdam ,
Stockholm , Vienna , and Barcelona. And in Germany, we have a program that allows you to unlock rental
bikes at rail stations using your cell phone.

From:
To:

I Sabre Jones <sjones@linslade.co.uk>

I Jack Poirier <j.poirier@unne.edu>

Dear Mr. Poirier:

I am writing on behalf of our managing director, Mr. Allen Cross, to inform you that he has looked
over the materials you e-mailed him on March 23. He indicated that he would like to speak to you
concerning your application for the position of Assistant Video Editor.
Mr. Cross was particularly interested in the fact that you are a fluent Italian speaker, as the position
may involve editing training videos for a firm in Milan. Mr. Cross will be in Boston from April 10-13,
and he asked me to inquire as to whether you could meet with him in Boston on the morning of
April 12. If it is possible for you to travel to Boston for an interview at that time, please contact me.

1:

Thanks for letting me know about the interview, Jack. What great news! This could be a real dream job
for you. I'm so glad we spent that time polishing up your resume in January.
Just some quick hints ...
* Find out as much as you can about the company on the Internet
* Find out from his admin assistant exactly where and when the interview will be
* Bring your laptop and show him the videos that you worked on when you were an intern
* This might be the time for you to buy a good suit!
* Mention that you spent a semester in Italy when you were in high school
* Be sure to let him know that you won't be available until after graduation in early May.

standard interview questions, and we videotaped it? You might want to come by the Center next Friday,
and we can watch it again.
Best of luck!
