Foam System Design

This document provides guidelines for designing an effective foam fire suppression system for hazards containing flammable liquids. The system works by creating a blanket of foam to cool and separate the fire from oxygen until it is extinguished. An effective foam solution consists of foam concentrate mixed with water at a ratio of 3-6% by volume. The minimum design requirements include a density of 6.5 liters per minute per square meter, a protection time of 10 minutes, and sizing pipes and calculating needed foam concentrate and solution based on the protected area.

Step 9: Foam system design

Foam depends on making a blanket of foam on fire to cool it and separate it

from air until it is extinguished
Effective with hazard containing flammable liquid like fuel rooms
Foam solution consists of foam Constraint and water
Foam is 3 or 6 % of solution volume
Constraint
Min design density is 6.5 l/min.m2
We calculate flammable Area of hazard
Min protection time is 1o min according to NFPA 11
Foam solution needed= 6.5 x 10 x Area= liter
To get foam Constraint = Foam solution x 0.03= liter
For pipe sizing we use water pipe sizing charts.
