Inclusion North Bulletin

In this bulletin you will hear about some of


the work Inclusion North is doing and
information about what is happening across
the country.
Self Advocate Development Programme
Inclusion North is offering a development programme for
Self Advocacy Organisations. The topics being
addressed have been highlighted as priority areas by Self
Advocacy groups.
By looking at these as part of an overall development
programme we aim to offer a reflective and informative
view of self advocacy.
What is your offer? Delivered by Kirsty Morgan & Kellie
Woodley. Reflecting on what you do now and the
development of new ideas. (November)
Funding, delivered by Melody Clarke. Looking at funding
routes and what is required for a good application.
(January)
Quality Standards and Governance, self advocacy
supporters from KeyRing, Your Voice Counts and the
Northumberland Central Forum will take you through how
they have measured outcomes using the standards
developed by the Self Advocacy Supporters Network. The
importance of good governance will be delivered by Jan
Walmsley & Shaun Picken. (March)

Sharing Knowledge North East and Cumbria


A citizen leadership course is being offered to residents
across the North East and Cumbria. The course will be run
by in control, Inclusion North and supported by Partners in
Policymaking.
There are 25 places available places available for people
who as a result of their disability need support to live the
lives they want in their local community.
This course is for people who are
Keen to be part of a strong community network
Want to be a champion for the North East and
Cumbria
Are passionate about peoples right to be included
Committed to action and working with other people to
make life better for people who may need support
Some of the things you will learn on the course
How to get your point across
Why things are the way they are
Why health and social care services have been
designed the way they have
How policies and new ideas come about
This course will start in January 2017and there will be four
two day sessions a month until May 2017.

Tomorrows Leaders in Yorkshire and Humber


Tomorrows Leaders is a leadership course for people with
learning disabilities.
It is for people who are already leaders in their area but
want to become better at this. It is also for people who
have lived in a hospital and want to use their own
experience to help others.
On the course, you will learn about:
The history of the self advocacy movement
Why services have been designed in the way they
have
How government works and policies are made
How to get your point over to people
What being a strong leader means
You will have the chance to meet other people who are
leaders in the disability movement.
The course will take place in Leeds from February 2017.

Disability Rights UK Toolkit for Education


Providers
Disability Rights UK are making a toolkit for providers of
Education.
The toolkit will show good practice in supporting disabled
learners to make move from internships into paid
employment.

The learning materials include information about

Finding the right work placement


Job carving
Barriers and solutions examples of adjustments
Access to Work
Progression to paid employment
Part-time hours
Positive impact of work for interns
Benefits for employer

A film is available that shows two people who are now


working and the support provided by their job coach and
the way adjustments were made to overcome any barriers.
They also describe the positive impact of working, earning,
and being able to make choices about their lives.
The job coach talks about his role and how important it is
to talk to employers about the right jobs for people.
The employer talks about the changes the company made
and the buddy scheme they have introduced.

Summary Care Records


If you are registered with a GP practice in England you will
have a Summary Care Record (SCR), unless you have
previously chosen not to have one.

It includes important information about your health:
Medicines you are taking
Allergies you suffer from
Any bad reactions to medicines

You may need to be treated by health and care


professionals that do not know your medical history.
Essential details about your healthcare can be difficult to
remember, particularly when you are unwell or have
complex care needs.

Having an SCR means that when you need healthcare


you can be helped to recall vital information.
You can choose to have additional information included in
your SCR, which can enhance the care you receive.

Local Support For People With A Learning


Disability Study
The Study team at the National Audit Office are looking for
people for a study.
In 2013 the Department of Health said it would move
people with a learning disability and or autism out of
hospitals if it was better to support them in the community.
The study will update on the Transforming Care
Programme
to see if the government is getting better at
supporting people in the community who have been
in hospitals
to see if recommendations made have been done
look at health and social care support available to
people with learning disabilities who have not been in
hospitals as well as those who have been

Nexus Consultation About New Vehicles


Nexus are applying for funding from the government to
replace its vehicles.
They want people to tell them what they would like to see
if they had new vehicles.

York Carers Centre Vacancy


York Carers Centre helps unpaid carers with support in
the York Area.
They have a vacancy for a Carer Support Worker who will
work providing one on one support information and advice
to maintain and improve carer health and wellbeing.
You should have a background of providing information
and support to individuals in a community setting and
experience of advocating on behalf of vulnerable clients.
You will be required to travel throughout the York area and
be subject to an enhanced DBS check.
The post is 27.5hours per week and the salary is 22,443
per annum pro rata (NJC SCP 26).

Come on Down Festival


Come on Down! a festival of performing arts and films for
and by learning disabled people.

Seven Stars Theatre Company Headway Arts are looking


for people to take part in their festival or watch their
festival.

They want people to attend for a full day to perform or


showcase their work and stay to watch and meet the other
groups as well.

Last year Come on Down was attended by around 200


people and 20 organisations from across the region.
