: Introduction to Ancient Greek Art, and Architecture.*

Dates

: September 2nd to 11th,2014

Credit units

: 3 semester units

Lectures and site visits : A total of 48 hrs, over 10 days, of lectures and discussions ,
during visits in museums and ancient sites.
Student involvement

: Daily 3 hours of sketching, keeping notes,


studying-observing and taking photographs.

Final grade

: Progress based (a) on keeping a sketch book with thorough


notes and records, and (b) the submission to the faculty of
ASFA of a paper on a topic of their interest, after returning
to their home base.
Study tour Itinerary
:
September 2nd Tuesday (Day 1) - Arriving to Athens,
Registration at the hotel. Afternoon Introduction /lectures at the university.
Dinner at the hotel , 1st night in Athens.

September 3rd Wednesday (Day 2)


Visit the Acropolis, the Museum of Acropolis, and the National Archaeological
Museum in the afternoon.
Dinner at the hotel, 2nd night in Athens.

*The course is administered by the Philomuse Educational Entity of The Athens School of Fine Arts
(ASFA) and the instructors are members of the faculty of the university.

September 4th Thursday (Day 3) - Morning depart for Delphi, on the way brief
stop to see the Byzantine monastery of St.Loukas.
The mountain road leading to Delphi , via Arachova, is according to the myth the
road where Oedipus met and killed his father ,whom he had never met before.
Arrive in Delphi register at the hotel and then visit the Ancient site of Delphi,
Dinner at the hotel , night at Delphi.

September 5th Friday (Day 4) - Morning visit of the Delphi Archaeological


Museum , leaving in the early afternoon for Olympia, cross the Bay of Corinth to
Peloponnesus, and via Patras continue to Olympia .
Dinner at the hotel ,1st night in Olympia.

September 6th Saturday (Day 5) - visit the Ancient site of the Olympic games
and the Archaeological Museum .
Dinner at the hotel , 2nd night in Olympia.

September 7th Sunday (Day 6) Morning depart for the temple of Apollo of
Vassae via Andritsena.
From Vassae continue through the mountains of Arcadia ,via Tripoli and Argos
arriving to the Tomb of Atreus and Mycenae.
Arriving at Nafplion, Dinner at the hotel, 1 st night in Nafplion.

September 8th Monday ( Day 7) Morning visit the citadel of Tiryns, and the
Medieval Castle of Nafplion.
Afternoon drive to the Asklepios sanctuary and the ancient theater of Epidaurus .
Dinner at the hotel, 2nd night at Nafplion.

September 9thTuesday (Day 8 ) - leave for Ancient Corinth, visit the Agora, and
Archaeological Museum, cross the Corinth canal and continue to Athens, along

the road which according to the myth was the route of Thesseus going to
Athens.
Dinner at the hotel ,3rd night in Athens.

September 10th Wednesday (Day 9) - Morning visit, the ancient Agora of Athens,
and then the Byzantine Museum.
Early afternoon concluding lecture at the university. Discussion of the choices
for the final papers , late afternoon drive to the temple of Poseidon at Cape
Sounion,
Dinner at the hotel ,4th night in Athens.

September 11th Thursday (Day 10) Drive through central Athens ( the Ancient
Stadium , and 19th century Neoclassic Athens) tour ends at Athens airport ,
departure for Prague.
Please Note:

1- Transport will be provided for all the 10 days in Greece, starting from day one and
ending at the airport of Athens the last day. Transport from and to the Athens Airport is
included in the price if the students arrive from Prague and leave Athens as a group.
2-The faculty will discuss with the students the choices of topics. The students will
collect information, keep notes, sketch and take photographs, while in Greece and when
they return back to their base they will write a paper on that topic and mail it to the
instructor, for final grades
