The Hitchhiker
It was a very wet and windy day and David Williams was (0) soaked to the skin (1)____________
he stood at the side of the road (2)__________ to hitch a lift. (3)_______ far, only four cars had
(4)_________ along and each one had gone past (5)__________ stopping . David was beginning
to wonder if anyone (6)________ stop for him when a lorry suddenly (7)__________ up and the
driver told him to hop on the back as there wasnt (8)____________ in the cab. David accepted
gladly and quickly climbed aboard.
To his (9)________ , in the back was an empty coffin. (10)_________ it was still raining heavily,
David decided to climb (11)_________ it for shelter. Standing by the roadside had (12)_________
him feel very tired, so it wasnt (13) _______ before he had fallen fast asleep.
While he was sleeping, the lorry (14)_________ stopped again to (15)________ up another
hitchhiker. Like David, he too climbed on to the back of the lorry. By now, the rain had stopped and
the sun had come (16)________ . It began to (17)_______very hot inside the coffin and David
suddenly woke up. Without thinking, he lifted the lid (18)________the coffin, saw the stranger
sitting there and shouted: Have I (19)_______asleep for long?
His fellow hitchhiker took one look at David, screamed (20)_____________ fear and jumped
(21)__________ the lorry in panic. Needless to say, he has never hitchhiked (22) ________ .
DEPARTMENT STORES
In 1846 an Irish immigrant in New York named Alexander Stewart opened a business called the
Marble Dry-Goods Palace. By (0) doing. so, he gave the world something completely new
the department store. Before this, no-one (16) . tried to bring together such a wide range of
goods (17) . a single roof. The business did very (18) . . It expanded rapidly and soon
had (19) . staff of two thousand. For Stewart even that was not enough, (20) .. . In 1862
he moved to an eight-storey building nearby, (21) . he renamed A.T. Stewarts Cast-Iron
Palace. It was, (22) . for many years would remain, the largest shop in the world.
Others followed Stewarts example and soon there were stores (23) . his in many major cities
in the United States. We dont (24) . when people started calling them department stores. The
expression wasnt used in print (25) . 1893, when it appeared in Harpers magazine, but the
way that it is used there (26) . it clear that it was already widely understood. (27) . is
certain is that department stores completely changed the shopping experience for millions of
people. They offered not only an enormous range of goods, (28) . also levels of
comfort, luxury and excitement previously unknown to customers. Almost from the start they had
restaurants, toilets and many (29) . facilities, so (30) . was no need to go elsewhere for
anything.
