Hello from the Art Room!

from Ms. Phelps and Mrs. Franchi
We cant believe its already a few weeks into the 2nd Quarter! The school year has definitely flown by so far.
We wanted to give you a glimpse on what is happening in the art room. Lets take a look at what we have planned for
the rest of the quarter.
KINDERGARTEN is currently working on their Dr. Seuss inspired Wuppet Puppets. Students learned about geometric
shapes and are using them, along with different paper manipulation techniques to create their puppets. We also
continuing to build their cutting paper and gluing skills. This quarter students will also be working in clay for the first
time and will be learning how to make pinch pots. We will also be learning about organic shapes and how they are
different from organic shapes. For this unit we will look at the artwork of Andy Warhol and create a project inspired by
his prints.
1ST GRADE just finished their Complementary Color Dance party project. For this project students learned about the
artwork of Keith Haring, studied body movement and how to accurately draw bodies in motion, and learned the
complementary colors (or best friend colors). Students will next be learning about the artwork of Alexander Calder
and will be introduced to new types of artwork including mobiles, stabiles, and stained glass, while also reviewing color
mixing and how colors are made. Students will ultimately create a mobile sculpture inspired by Calder and using their
knowledge of color mixing.
2ND GRADE will continue working on their Matisse paper cut out project as they have been learning about Matisse and
his artwork. This project focuses on paper cutting out and collaging skills and the concepts of positive and negative space
to create an underwater seascape. Once finished students will move into their torn paper Self-portraits while learning
about da Vincis Mona Lisa. This project will work on paper manipulation and collaging skills to create a likeness of
themselves.
3RD GRADE: has begun working on their exotic jungle landscapes inspired by Henri Rousseau and his artwork. Students
have studied the concepts of overlapping and showing distance, while continuing to work on their drawing skills in order
to create exotic jungle landscapes. Students will also be reviewing crayon rubbing skills, warm and color colors, and
paper manipulation skills.
4TH GRADE is continuing to work on their Georgia OKeeffe chalk flowers. Students have looked at the artwork of
Georgia OKeeffe, specifically her extreme close-up flowers for inspiration. Students used view finders to create close-up
views of their flowers and the grid drawing technique to draw their flowers larger than real life. Students used glue to
outline their projects. They will begin to use chalk and review the warm and cool colors in order to finish their projects.
5TH GRADE is continuing to work on their fantasy structures inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright and
Friedensreich Hundertwasser. During this unit students have looked at the work of both architects, learned a variety of
vocab related to architecture, learned how to draw and add value in pencil and crayon to different forms (including
cubes, cylinders, and cones, along with reviewing the sphere). Students have finished drawing their fantasy structure
blueprints and will begin adding color to finish their projects.
It's going to be a great quarter!
