Ph.D. Norms
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR Ph.D. SUPERVISOR :
1. A faculty member to be recognized as Research Supervisor for Ph.D. Programme should
have a Ph.D. degree in the subject or in a related discipline.
2. He/she should have a minimum of five National/International publications with ISBN
numbers
3. He/she should have at least 08 years of teaching/research/industrial research experience
4. The University will constitute Research Committees with at least three experts on it to
look into the fulfillment of the above criteria before giving recognition as Ph.D. Supervisor.
The Institutes shall also form their own Departmental Research Committees for periodic
review of progress of students.
5. A Supervisor shall not have, at any given point of time, more than the following number of
Ph.D. scholars (including students from all universities in the state of Gujarat):
Professor : 5
Associate Professor : 3
Assistant Professor : 1
Students from foreign countries may be in addition to the above numbers, subject to
fulfilling AICTE norms for such students.
6. Any institute offering PhD programmes should have a P.G. programme in the related area.
7. The University shall ensure that above criteria is satisfied and adequate research facilities
are available in the institute before recognizing a PhD Supervisor and allocating Ph.D.
students to a particular institute
8. The number of seats for Ph.D. shall be decided well in advance and notified in the
University website or advertisement.
9. Age not exceeding 65 years at the time of registration.
PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION
Candidates wishing to pursue Ph.D. should have minimum 55% marks at Master’s
level in the related area in which he wishes to pursue Ph.D.
Candidate who has published at least one research publication at the time of applying
for PhD will be given preference admission.
All colleges/institutions shall admit doctoral students through an Entrance Test
conducted by the University as per prevailing norms of the University. Those students
who qualify UGC/CSIT (JRF) Examinations will be exempted from Entrance Test.
It shall be followed by an interview by the Research Committee of university
comprising of at least 4 experts.
At the time of interview, doctoral candidates are expected to discuss their research
interest/area and submit a research proposal along with work‐plan, if selected. The
research area of the supervisor shall be available on website for the reference of
candidate.
Only the predetermined number of students may be admitted to Ph.D. programme.
10. Admissions will be done in July/August of every year.
11. ALLOCATION OF SUPERVISOR
The allocation of the University recognized Supervisors for the selected students shall be
decided by the institute PhD Review Committee, in a formal manner depending on the
number of students per Supervisor, the available specialization among the Supervisors, and
the research interest of the student as indicated during interview by the student. The
allotment/allocation of Supervisor shall not be left to the individual student or Supervisor.
The student may be allowed to apply for change of supervisor under extra‐ordinary
circumstances such as death of supervisor/ non‐availability of supervisor for duration
longer than six months. The university shall consider such cases on the basis of their merit
and its decision shall be final.
COURSE WORK
12. After having been admitted, each Ph.D. student shall be required by the University to
undertake course work for a minimum of two courses which has to be cleared within two
semesters from the date of registration. The course work is to be carried out at the institute
where he/she is registered. The course work shall be treated as pre‐Ph.D. preparation.
Fees:
Fee structure is as given below:
Registration fee: Rs 1000/‐ at the time of admission to GTU.
Term Fee: Rs.10000/‐per semester (Rs.4000/‐ is to be deposited to GTU and remaining fee
Rs. 6000/‐to be deposited in the account of allotted institute).
Thesis Evaluation Fee: Rs.8000/‐ to be paid to GTU at the time of submission of final thesis
The fee is subject to revision by the University at its discretion and the research scholars will have
to pay the revised fee as and when made applicable.
EVALUTION AND ASSEMENT METHODS
13. The student shall make a presentation before the PhD Review Committee twice a year from
the second year onwards, which should also include the progress against the work‐plan
submitted. Institute PhD Review Committee may take suitable action if the work is not
found satisfactory, including recommendation for cancellation of registration.
14. Upon satisfactory completion of the course work which shall form an integral part of the
Ph.D. Programme, and upon completion of research work to the satisfaction of the
Supervisor and PhD Review Committee, the Ph.D. scholar shall submit a synopsis of the
thesis, and a draft copy of the thesis, not before three years of the registration.
15. In case of part time students, Ph.D. scholars will have to spend two more semesters in
addition to those mentioned above.
16. A Ph.D. scholar will be registered for five years and in case of part time students the period
will be six years. This may be extended by one year on approval from PhD Review
Committee . In case he/she fails to submit the final thesis within this period, he/she will
have to get re‐registered. For re‐registration, immediately on expiry of first /extended first
registration (as the case may be), the fees applicable for fresh students shall be paid, but
the student shall be exempted from taking the course work. Whereas for re‐registration
after a gap of one or more years after the first/extended first registration, the fees and rules
applicable to a fresh applicant shall be followed, including course work, submission of
synopsis, thesis, etc.
17. In case a student fails to submit the thesis or re‐register within the stipulated time, the
admission automatically stands cancelled. The PhD Review Committee shall intimate the
University, the list of all such students.
18. The Ph.D. student shall publish from his/her thesis a minimum of two research paper in
peer reviewed/refereed journal of international repute OR have at least four full research
papers published in refereed/peer‐reviewed Proceedings of International Conferences, and
produce evidence for the same in the form of acceptance letter and registration receipt of
the publication.
19. The thesis produced by the Ph.D. student and submitted to the University shall be
evaluated by at least two external experts having PhD and sufficient research experience,
out of which at least one shall be from outside the State. It shall be up to the University to
have one examiner from outside the country.
20. On receipt of satisfactory evaluation reports, the Ph.D. student shall undergo a viva voce
examination by at least one of the external examiners and the Supervisor, which shall be
openly defended.
21. The University shall try to complete the process of evaluation of the thesis within a period
of four months from the date of submission of the final thesis.
