CAUSATIVE VERBS: HAVE or GET something DONE

'X' NEEDS DOING

1. EXAMPLES:

Esta construccin tambin tiene un significado pasivo :

He had/got his car repaired last Monday.


(Le arreglaron su coche el lunes pasado)

Im having my flat painted.


(Me estn pintando el piso)
When are you going to have/get your hair cut?

The ceiling needs painting (= the ceiling needs to be painted)


My hair needs cutting (= my hair needs to be cut)

SUBJECT + NEED + GERUND

(Cando te vas a cortar el pelo? = te lo cortarn)

You should have/get your television fixed.


(Deberas arreglar el televisor. = hacer que te lo arreglen)

SUBJECT + HAVE/GET + OBJECT + PAST PARTICIPLE + COMPLEMENTS

3. USES:
a. Esta construccin tiene un significado pasivo. Describe situaciones en las
que alguien hace algn tipo de trabajo por nosotros.
b. Tambin sirve para describir desgracias o contratiempos que nos ocurren,
causadas por una persona no especificada o desconocida.
Peter had his car stolen last week.
(A Pedro le robaron su coche la semana pasada)

Harry got his nose broken in a fight.

(A Harry le rompieron la nariz en una pelea)

c. HAVE y GET significan lo mismo en este contexto, pero GET es ms informal.


Si mencionamos al agente de la accin con el verbo HAVE, usaremos el
INFINITIVO en lugar del PARTICIPIO PASADO.
I will have the mechanic repair my scooter.
Sue had the breakdown lorry tow her car.
