Reading is an activity that is both fun and enlightening. It can help us be more knowledgeable
and successful. You should cultivate the habit of reading. Here are some suggestions to help you
strengthen your reading habit.
1. Set a reading goal. It is the first step towards reading more. Determine how much time you
want to spend reading, or how many books you want to read over time. Start out with something
attainable. As your habit builds, you may want to set higher goals.
2. Always have a book around. Do not go anywhere without reading material. Always have
something in your bag to read. Keep a book or books by your bed. Having things available
makes it easier. You can read while waiting for the bus, the train or even for a friend.
3. Keep a list. Make a list of things you want to read in the future. Ask your friends what they
are reading. Watch for recommendations in the newspaper and magazines. Once you start
looking for good books, you will find them everywhere
5. Turn off the television. Television is one of our major time consumers. Make your television
watching more conscious and less habitual. There is nothing wrong with watching television
shows you really enjoy, but be aware that they do take up a lot of your time.
6. Join a reading group or book club. Reading groups typically meet once a month to discuss a
book they have all decided to read. Committing to the group provides a bit more drive to finish
the book, and gives you a great forum for discussion and socialisation around the books themes.
8. Visit the library or bookstore often. Take time to browse for good reading materials. Let
your eyes find things of interest. Browsing will feed your mental need to read, and give you
plenty of new things to read. If you have no space in your cupboard for books, borrow books
from a library.
9. Build your own strategy. Decide when reading fits your schedule. Some people read first
thing in the morning, some before bed. Some decide to read as they eat their lunch. And there is
more to your strategy than just timing. Make your own decisions about reading. You can be
reading more than one book at once. You may also want to stop reading something before you
finish if it is not holding your interest. It is ok to skim the book, getting what you want or need,
without reading every page. Determine what works best for you, develop your own beliefs and
ideas and then make them work for you.
4 The word browse as found in the text can best be replaced with
A look around B look through
C look carefully C look thoroughly
6 Which of the following is not recommended as a strategy for the reading habit?
A We should skim through books.
B We can read more than one book at a time.
C We should not stop reading if the book bores us.
D We should make our own decisions about reading.

Reading Comprehension

Uma and Mei Ling were in their school library gathering materials for their Science project.
Uma found a book that contained most of the information they needed for their project. She was
delighted and showed it to Mei Ling immediately. Mei Ling flipped through the pages and her
eyes went wide with surprise.
Then Mei Ling did something that shocked Uma. She glanced around quickly and when she
realised that no one was looking their way, tore out the pages that contained the relevant
information from the book. Uma protested immediately.
What on earth are you doing? Uma demanded.
Look, Mei Ling said. This is a black spot book and we cannot take it out from the
library. If others get hold of it, they may get better grades than us. In this way, we will have all the
information only to ourselves.
They continued arguing and their fierce, loud whispers attracted the librarians attention. At
once she marched towards them.
Whats all this racquet? she demanded. Both the girls stood rooted to the floor when the
librarians eyes fell on the pages in Mei Lings hands.
They were taken to the Principals office immediately. Mei Ling and Uma were given a good
scolding. They also had to pay for the damaged book.
Mei Ling blamed Uma for kicking up a fuss which attracted the librarians unwanted
attention. That was not the end of it. Their Science teacher got to know about the incident and
deducted 10% of their marks as punishment.

The Rafflesia is the largest flower in the world. The biggest flowers can reach up to one metre
across! The first Europeans to discover the Rafflesia were Sir Stamford Raffles who was the founder of
Singapore and Dr Joseph Arnold in 1816, near the town of Bencoolen in Sumatra. The species they
discovered was named Rafflesia arnoldii in their honour.
The Rafflesia is a strange plant. Unlike other plants, the Rafflesia has no leaves to process carbon
dioxide and sunshine into sugar and oxygen. There are no roots to soak up water and minerals from the
earth to manufacture into proteins. Instead there are long strands of tissue-like filaments that penetrate the
vines of the host plant. This is because the Rafflesia is a parasite which means that it does not need to
make its own nutrients. It just sucks the nutrient out of its host which is another plant.
A Rafflesia begins its life as a small bud like a flower bud. It takes about nine months for the bud
to mature. Then it will bloom into the beautiful fleshy flower. The Rafflesia has no specific flowering
season. However, the flower only lasts for a few days. When it is in bloom, it stinks to high heaven. The
reddish brown colour of the petals, sprinkled with white freckles exudes a most unpleasant stench, similar
to rotting flesh or carrion. Some believe that the stench attracts flies and other insects which help disperse
its seeds. Others believe that large animals could be agents for this seed dispersal.
In order for the seed to germinate, it was found that the vine of the host plant must be damaged in
some way so that the filaments of the seed may infiltrate successfully. The damage to the host vines could
be made by trampling hoofs of large animals. The seeds adhere to the passing animals hoofs and are
transported to other places where they can find host plants to attach to.
Steps are currently taken to preserve this plant which has become a tourist attraction. In
Peninsular Malaysia, one of the most alarming trends is the collection of Rafflesia buds for use in
traditional medicine. Often the collectors are experienced jungle experts, local orang asli, who are paid as
little as RM1 per bud. The buds are eventually sold in the market place for around RM5 or are processed
into medicinal preparations. The belief is that the Rafflesia buds will help mothers recover after their
pregnancy. It is clear that the over-collection of Rafflesia buds will pose a serious threat to the
conservation of the Rafflesia. These practices, as well as the loss of habitat, are some of the problems
undermining the efforts to conserve this magnificent flower.
