Product

The product we will be creating is a 2 minute long opening sequence

to a thriller film called They follow. The narrative is based on a
teenage girl, Emily Wilson (protagonist), who wakes up tied to a
chair to find out that she is being held captive. When she realises
what is happening, she begins screaming in fear looking for a way
to get out. After minutes of panic and struggle Emily manages to
escape from her chair. After many attempts to kick down the door,
she succeeds and runs straight out into the forest where the shed in
which she was held captive is. After running for a few minutes, the
two antagonists realise she is gone and chase after her. Emily hides
behind a tree in hopes of losing sight of the antagonists, however
they see her. Emily turns around as she thinks she has lost them
and is knocked out. Emily wakes up to both. The opening sequence
then ends.
To promote our film before its release, we will display posters. We
will also use social media networks like twitter, Instagram as it is an
effective yet relatively cheap option. We have chosen this method of
promotion due to our low budget and because of the fact that it is
easy to manage.

Target audience

We have chosen the target audience 15-30. (Both genders and

socio-economic groups C1-E).We chosen a mass market instead of a
niche market as we found in our genre research that people
between the ages of 15 and 30 are more likely to be interested in
the thriller genre and there is more of a chance that a wide variety
of people will watch. People in this age group are also more likely to
want a rush in their adrenaline. We chose 15 as our lowest age as a
thriller film would not appeal to anyone of a younger age.
Our film is aimed towards a unisex audience. This is because
research doesnt show that the thriller genre doesnt appeal to any
specific genre. Our pre-questionnaire showed that both male and
females enjoy thriller films equally, so targeting a unisex audience is
appropriate. Both males and females have different reasons for
watching a thriller film. A man might go to see a thriller film for a
sense of fear and an adrenaline rush, however a woman may go to
follow the narrative.
Our chosen age group have an attitude that makes them more
inclined to want an adrenaline rush and want to experience new
things, making them more likely to watch our film. Our target

audience also generally have more free leisure time to be able to

watch our film.
The aim of our film is to create a sense of mystery in the audience,
while still having the thriller element. Our audience will also feel
curious and anxious as to what will happen next.

Context

Our product will gain more recognition and attention through

mediums online. These would include websites like Twitter, Google,
YouTube and Facebook. Nearly all of our audience use the internet
and so will more likely be exposed to the marketing of our product.
This will give our film extra recognition encouraging our target
audience to watch the film.

Media Concepts

As our film is of the thriller genre, we decided to us low-key lighting

in the majority of the scenes in our opening sequence as it is a
typical convention seen in thriller films. The low-key lighting creates
mystery and an uncertain atmosphere. In turn, the audience will be
put on edge and will feel curious about what will to happen next.
When filming, the main shots of the protagonist will include lots of
close-up and extreme close ups to help the audience understand the
fear the protagonist is feeling. The shots of the antagonists will
include mainly wide shots to ensure that the audience are able to
see their costumes and body language helping them see that the
antagonists are a big threat to the protagonist. Shots of both the
protagonist and antagonists will be edited using fast paced editing.
This will give the audience an adrenaline rush and will put them on
edge. We will be using diegetic dialogue (screaming and heavy
breathing) to convey fear and terror. We will also be using fast
paced score music to also help keep the audience on edge. Sound
effects will be added at key moments to enhance tension in the
audience.

Institutions

Due to the fact that we will have a low budget, our final products
quality will not be as good in comparison with productions that have
a much larger budget. Because of this, we decided to distribute our
product through an independent film company as it will increase the
chance of attracting alternative audiences, as well as our target
audience. Our film will be distributes through film4. The name of our
production company is TNT Productions.

Representation

Our film will include mostly stereotypical representations of

characters. For example, the protagonist is represented as the
damsel in distress as she is a young female who appears to be
vulnerable. However, the protagonist is a girl who is mixed race
which is a countertype as protagonists are typically white males. We
chose to generally stick with stereotypical representations of
characters as counter-types may not appeal to our target audience
as much as stereotypes. Sticking to stereotypical representations,
opposed to using counter typical representations may also make our
target feel more comfortable as it is what they are familiar with.

Genre

The beginning of our opening sequence will begin in an alleyway.

This is because the alleyway will connote mystery and is a typical
convention of a thriller film. The rest of our opening sequence will be
set in a forest. This is because using a forest as a location is a
typical convention of a thriller, so the audience will be able to
identify that something bad will happen. The opening sequence will
be set in the evening, as there will be low lighting, which is another
convention of a thriller film. The main character that is in trouble in
our film is a female, whilst the antagonists are male. This is again
another typical convention of a thriller film, as women are seen to
be vulnerable and men are seen to be powerful.
