Imagine yourself on a deserted island with beautiful rivers and calming beaches, palm
trees and warm sun hitting your skin during the day. Imagine having no adults or anyone around
to boss you around anymore and finally, freedom to do whatever you like. For the boys in Lord
of the Flies it is a dream come true, right until they start realizing how slowly they are becoming
less human. The young boys are starting to reveal their true savage selves day by day, night by
night. In Lord of the Flies, the boys start descending into savagery throughout chapters one
through nine.

Savagery has become very common in the boys throughout the book. They are starting
to change in a very dangerous way because they havent experienced anything like that before,
so they dont know the difference between right and wrong with what they are doing. In the text
it states that, Only the beast lay still, a few yards from the sea. Even in the rain they could see
how small a beast it was; and already its blood was staining the sand. This part of the text is
explaining how Simon, one of the boys, was killed during one of their dances showing that they
have come to the conclusion of seeing something wrong and not thinking about their actions
before they do something and reacting afraid for their safety which is sometimes good but in this
case they didnt take the time to see what it was instead they just killed Simon. They have
shown that they dont want to be rescued and they dont mind being stranded on an island with
no adults. In the text it shows how Jack and his crew, also known as the hunters, let the fire,
that was being used as a signal for help, go out just because Jack wanted to find a pig and kill it
to show his strength and capacity to kill. It says in the text, The fire was dead. They saw that
straightaway; saw what they had really known down on the beach when the smoke of home had
beckoned. The fire was out, smokeless and dead; the watchers were gone. Last but not least,
the boys start showing more change when they are pretending that Maurice is a pig and they
start pretending to beat him like if he was a wild animal. The text shows this when it says, Then
Maurice pretended to be the pig and ran squealing into the center, and the hunters, circling still,
pretended to beat him. As they danced, they sang. All of this evidence shows how much they
have become less human and savage from the beginning of the book all the way to chapter
nine.

Unfortunately, the boys have changed a lot in this book, showing their true savage ways
and desires to become wild. These issues are relevant in todays society because it is showing
us that people have different sides to them when they are at risk or challenged. Society needs
to see that not everything is nice and peachy and there are a lot of things that can go wrong
without having any type of order and rules. This is why we need to start thinking about our future
and thinking of what would happen if all of this went down in the real world. This book has
showed me everything wrong with not having rules and with having the privilege of doing all the
things that run through peoples minds.
