A Book of Boats

Written by Randall Nevins

Early Boats

Early Egyptian boats were used in

the River Nile. They were typically
made out of the papyrus plant. They
were usually steered using oars or poles
because there wasnt much wind on the
Nile. The boats were curved and
usually had a box shaped cabin.
The Trireme
The Trireme was primarily used by
Greeks, Romans, and Phoenicians. It
featured three rows of oars and 2 small
sails. Triremes were fast, agile and a
dominant warship in the 5th century
B.C.

Galleon
The Galleon grew in popularity in 16th
through the 18th centuries. It had three or
more masts and had multiple decks. Its
multiple decks allowed it to carry cannons
for protection.

The Clipper
The Clipper was a long American ship
with 3 masts and lots of sails. It had a
sharp bow to slice through the water. It was
very popular for trade because of it high
speeds. High speeds allowed the ship to
deliver goods that might spoil faster than
the competition.

Early Steamships
Steamships were not used practically
until the 1800s. They moved using paddles
or screw propellers. They were powered by
steam engines. Steamboats were not very
popular or useful because they were
extremely slow and difficult to repair.
Ocean Liners
The ocean liner is a large passenger
ship that runs long-distance voyages on a
schedule. It can also carry mail or cargo.
Early ocean liners were steam powered, but
eventually they were driven by gas engines.
One very famous ocean liner is the Titanic.

Cargo Ships
Cargo ships are extremely large ships
that can carry immense amounts of cargo
containers. They turn slowly and are hard
to navigate in shallow water.

Battleship
The battleship is a massive ship with
huge guns. It's not used today because it's
a big target and it's easy to hit by enemy
fire. However, it used to be the strongest
ship in the fleet due to its many large guns.
Aircraft Carrier

Aircraft carriers are used by the military.

They carry aircraft, which can be deployed
to fight in the case an attack. They are one
of the most effective Navy ships in a fleet.

The Submarine
The submarine is a very valued ship in a
fleet. Its capabilities of going underwater to
avoid detection is highly valued. Since it
can go underwater, it's able to perform
sneak attacks on enemy ships. The only
problem with these ships is that they give
very little room for the crew to live in.

Destroyer
The destroyer is a very small and fast
boat with high firepower. Its commonly
used in the Navy. Today, new destroyers
are being developed that makes them 50
times harder to detect with radar.

The Cruiser
A cruiser is a ship in a fleet that has
multiple capabilities. These abilities include
scouting, fighting or just support.
