cause/effect = how one or more events (actions) will result in an outcome compare = to look for similarities contrast = to look for differences describe = tell more about, use details express = to say or tell generalize = the basic idea summarize = the main points variable = a symbol that represents some number X or Y is the most common fiction = fake or made up stories non-fiction = not fake, true stories consecutive = in order Example: 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 persuade = to convince someone evaluate (in math) = solve the problem chronological = arranged in the order of time evidence = to prove or disprove something; proof predict = what will happen next infer = to read in between the lines. Example: You have a blue note. infer You didnt do your homework. equation = a number sentence that says two expressions. *Will have an equal sign. Example: 5 + X = 8 Demonstrate = to show that you know Sum = the answer to an addition problem Difference= the answer to a subtraction problem less than = subtract product = the answer to a multiplication problem quotient = the answer to a division problem
paraphrase = rewrite or say in your own words
revise= recheck/ change it relate = to tell analyze = study interpret = make it clear/simple distinguish= compare/ point out the differences clarify = to make clear/ simplify illustrate = to make clear using an example apply = using what you know or have/ put to use validate = prove its true (writing) justify = show its true (math)
