Delaney Brigman
UNC Charlotte Reading Lesson Feedback
To be completed by the teacher candidate prior to observation
Preservice teacher: Delaney Brigman Observer: Brandi Elmore Date: March 8, 2017 School: Nathaniel Alexander Elementary School Time: 8:10am Grade: 3rd Whole Group Lesson 1. What are your goals and objectives for this lesson? To provide the students with different context clue strategies when answering questions about the pictures in passages and to make sure that the students all feel engaged in the lesson. 2. What are some specific things you would like to be observed? I would like you to observe whether or not the students are engaged during the lesson. I also want you to observe if I am presenting the lesson in a way that is appropriate for the students levels in this class. To be completed by the Observer: 1. Strengths to continue to build on: Delaney explained the rationale for the lesson which engaged the students and got them in the right mind frame to think about the text they were reading and what they would be asked to do to successfully complete the lesson. She followed the reading by stopping to make sure students comprehended the text before moving to the questions. Delaney does a wonderful job modeling her thought process and test taking strategies while answering the questions. She kept students engaged by allowing them to come to the flip chart and help answer questions/ model their thinking. 2. Suggestions for future lessons: We teach students to stop themselves while they are reading to check for their individual understanding. It is always good to model that during the read aloud, especially with difficult vocabulary/information.
Small Group Lesson
(The teacher was able to sit and observe me teaching this lesson and provided me with feedback) 1. What are your goals and objectives for this lesson? To further extend students knowledge on how to use context clues to answer questions. I want to provide these students with extra support on this skill. 2. What are some specific things you would like to be observed? I would like you to observe if the questions that I created are at the appropriate level for these students and to observe if I am conducting the lesson in a way that is keeping the students engaged. To be completed by the Observer: 1. Strengths to continue to build on: Delaney does a fantastic job facilitating small group instruction. Her lesson was spot on for the standards/ strategies that the students are working on in class. She was there to support in thinking and modeling. Her lesson was rigorous and challenged the students to use the text and illustrations to find the answers. Using technology in the lesson allowed students to use the tools from razkids to highlight their answers in the text which gave Delaney a chance to help students reach the desired outcome. 2. Suggestions for future lessons: It is always good to start with a small discussion about the strategies/ standard that you are going to teach. This helps refresh the students' memories and get them ready for small group. Anticipation of student responses (or lack of) is something that comes with experience. Practicing different scenarios before you work with students will help drive your questions to ensure student understanding.
