are equal for all values of x that make each expression a real number. Therefore,
2x3 12x2 16x x1x 22
6x 24 3
for all values of x except x 4. (At x 4, the original expression is
undefined.) This is why the domain of a rational expression is always determined
before the expression is simplified.
The purpose of simplifying a rational expression is to create an equivalent
expression that is simpler to evaluate. Consider the expression from Example 4 in its
original form and in its simplified form. If we substitute an arbitrary value of x into
the expression (such as x 3), we see that the simplified form is easier to evaluate.

4. Simplifying Ratios of 1
When two factors are identical in the numerator and denominator, they form a
ratio of 1 and can be simplified. Sometimes we encounter two factors that are
opposites and form a ratio of 1. For example:

6w 6
w1 w1 on both sides to
clear fractions.
The denominator is 0
for the value of w 1.
Because the value w 1 makes the denominator zero in one (or more) of the
rational expressions within the equation, the equation is undefined for w 1.
6w 6
No other potential solutions exist, so the equation 3 has no
w1 w1
solution.
Examples 13 show that the steps for solving a rational equation mirror the
process of clearing fractions from Section 1.4. However, there is one significant
difference. The solutions of a rational equation must be defined in each rational
6w
expression in the equation. When w 1 is substituted into the expression
w1
6
or , the denominator is zero and the expression is undefined. Hence w 1
w1
cannot be a solution to the equation

Proportions are used in geometry with similar triangles. Two triangles are said
to be similar if their corresponding angles are equal. In such a case, the lengths
of the corresponding sides are proportional. The triangles in Figure 6-5 are sim-

Solution:
Let x represent the time required for both people working together to complete
the job.
One method to approach this problem is to determine the portion of the job
that each person can complete in 1 hr and extend that rate to the portion of the
job completed in x hr.
JoAn can perform the job in 3 hr. Therefore, she completes 13 of the job in
1 hr and 13 x jobs in x hr.
Bonnie can perform the job in 5 hr. Therefore, she completes 15 of the job in
1 hr and 15 x jobs in x hr.
The sum of the portions of the job completed by each person must equal one
