What is Refarming?
Definition
The Refarming means that the carrier reuses the frequency resources and raises the frequency spectrum
and data throughput by introducing new wireless communication technologies.
With the Refarming technology, the UMTS can be deployed on the original GSM frequency band.
Presently, the Refarming is performed on the 900 MHz frequency band.

Why U900?
Targets:
Keep Leading mobile market
Enriching user experience
Enhancing network capability &
indoor 3G Coverage
Challenges: Opportunities:

Advantages of UMTS900
UMTS900 is an excellent wide coverage solution:
- Lower cost with better coverage than a UMTS2100 network;
- Less transmission and penetration loss than U2100 -->Better for indoor coverage and has better network
coverage performance;
- Improved network quality of service (QoS) and better user experience.

Using the geographic observation in Nastar, we made a comparison between U900 & U2100 coverage in Larache city
in the same time. We can see clearly the U900 coverage distribution is much better than U2100.

GU Frequency Distribution Scheme
Border Distribution Mode
Advantages:
The GSM frequency resources are consecutive and thus the frequency planning is
convenient.
The carrier only needs to consider the inter-GU system interference at one side.
Disadvantages:
The spacing of 2.6 MHz is required between the UMTS and the GSM system of
other carrier.
Disadvantages:
The carrier should consider the interference at two sides.

U900 UE Penetration
For better 2G quality, its suggested to use 4.2M for U900, because only 6% less than standard 5.0M, and 4 GSM
frequencies can be saved for GSM.

GU Frequency Allocation
For better 2G performance, U4.2M is suggested. Just 6% of throughput less than U5.0M.

Bufferzone plannig:
The buffer zone solution based on coverage :
MR based Buffer Zone planning using UNET
mainly used to roughly determine the buffer zone in the
network planning phase. The GSM cell that has overlapped
coverage with a UMTS cell or GSM cell is the buffer zone
This solution is implemented by using the coverage prediction
function of Unet or Atoll.

Capacity study:
The purpose of capacity study is set a proper HR parameters adjustment and calculate the number of DCS1800
upgrades needed to carry the traffic and avoid congestion after 900 TRXs deletion.

Cluster preparation:
G900 Transfers Traffic to the Co-located U2100 and U900 Cells:
The adjustment is performed through the interoperable parameters of 2G/3G network
In 3G side also, several parameters can be adjusted (eg: SsearchRAT., Qrxlevmin, Qoffset1sn..)

Traffic Migration results & challenges
Some Challenges:
- Traffic distribution: Deep indoor users cannot be migrated
to DCS1800;
- Far users: Esp in Rural areas, the inter-site distance is high,
so the farther users cant be pushed to DCS1800.
