The key takeaways are that refarming involves reusing frequency resources to deploy newer wireless technologies, UMTS900 provides better coverage than UMTS2100, especially indoors, and can be used to expand 3G coverage in suburban and rural areas.

Refarming means that the carrier reuses frequency resources and raises frequency spectrum and data throughput by introducing new wireless communication technologies, allowing UMTS to be deployed on original GSM frequency bands such as 900MHz.

UMTS900 provides lower cost and better coverage than UMTS2100 networks. It also has less transmission and penetration losses, resulting in better indoor coverage and network performance. This improves quality of service and the user experience.

What is Refarming?

Definition

The Refarming means that the carrier reuses the frequency resources and raises the frequency spectrum
and data throughput by introducing new wireless communication technologies.

With the Refarming technology, the UMTS can be deployed on the original GSM frequency band.
Presently, the Refarming is performed on the 900 MHz frequency band.

Advantages of UMTS900
UMTS900 is an excellent wide coverage solution:
- Lower cost with better coverage than a UMTS2100 network;
- Less transmission and penetration loss than U2100 -->Better for indoor coverage and has better network
coverage performance;
- Improved network quality of service (QoS) and better user experience.

GU Frequency Distribution Scheme
Border Distribution Mode

Advantages:
The GSM frequency resources are consecutive and thus the frequency planning is
convenient.
The carrier only needs to consider the inter-GU system interference at one side.
Disadvantages:
The spacing of 2.6 MHz is required between the UMTS and the GSM system of
other carrier.

Sandwich Distribution Mode

Recommended
Advantages:
The UMTS can be placed at any internal places. The interference between other
carriers need not be considered.
If the U4.6/4.2M is adopted, 2/4 frequencies can be saved for the GSM system.

Disadvantages:
The carrier should consider the interference at two sides.

Huawei provide flexible GU frequency spacing solutions (UMTS bandwidth 3.8M/4.2M/4.4M/4.6M/4.8M/5.0M);

Bufferzone plannig:
The buffer zone solution based on coverage :
MR based Buffer Zone planning using UNET
mainly used to roughly determine the buffer zone in the
network planning phase. The GSM cell that has overlapped
coverage with a UMTS cell or GSM cell is the buffer zone
This solution is implemented by using the coverage prediction
function of Unet or Atoll.

The MR-based buffer zone:

used to optimize the buffer zone in the network optimization
phase.
The MR includes the downlink receive level of the serving cell
and six neighboring cells. Then, you can calculate the coupling
loss between the base station and the terminals.

MR based Buffer Zone Planning is the most efficient way

Traffic Migration results & challenges

Traffic pushing can be easily accomplished after soft paramteres

adjustment. In some cases, physical actions are required.

Some Challenges:
- Traffic distribution: Deep indoor users cannot be migrated
to DCS1800;
- Far users: Esp in Rural areas, the inter-site distance is high,
so the farther users cant be pushed to DCS1800.
