To join sentences when their meanings go well together

To add more information

eg. We brought the food and they supplied the drink

BUT
To join sentences when their meanings contrast with each other

eg. Russ is quiet. His cousin is talkative

Russ is quiet but his cousin is talkative. (Quiet contrasts with talkative)

OR
To join sentences to show that only one of the choices will take place.

eg. We can eat at a restaurant. We can have a barbecue at home.

We can eat at a restaurant or we can have a barbecue at home.

When we use and/or to join three or more sentences, it is

best to do the following:
Sentence + comma + sentence (+ comma + sentence + ...) +
and/or +sentence
Examples:
I am Jo. She is May. He is Ali.
I am Jo, she is May and he is Ali.
