INTRODUCTION
Project 2 is an individual assignment on application of basic building services. This is an
individual project to apply building services systems to a domestic sized building. This
exercise requires students to demonstrate their understanding on the application by
producing technical drawings incorporating the necessary building services
We were required to use our Design Studio final project for this assignment. The purpose of
this exercise is to familiarize us with the application of the systems and apply them in the
design proposals. We were required to demonstrate our understanding of building services
by providing the most appropriate systems for the building, which include:
.
ELECTRICAL SUPPLY SYSTEM
MS 1979: 2007
The primary requirement of the earthing system is to ensure effective operation of the circuit
protective device. For effective operation of the circuit protective device, the resistance of
the earthing system shall be as low as possible. In installations where RCDs are used as the
circuit protective device, earthing resistance of less than 10 will generally ensure effective
operation of the RCDs. However earthing resistance of less than 1 is the target.
Where cables are installed buried behind walls, they shall be installed horizontally or vertically
i.e. parallel to the edges of the room. Subject to the dimensions of the columns and beams,
they shall be within 150 mm from the top of the walls and 150 mm from the edge of the wall.
Cables installed within walls shall be provided with mechanical protection such as a conduit.
Where cables are installed behind suspended ceilings or the ceiling space under the roof,
they shall be provided with mechanical protection such as being installed within approved
conduits. In addition they shall be installed either parallel or perpendicular to the edges of
the
walls.
A circuit intended to supply an air conditioner shall have a socket outlet (an unswitched type
is acceptable) in the vicinity of the air conditioner to facilitate the connection of the circuit to
(1) No pipe used for the carrying off of rain water from any roof shall be used for the purpose
of carrying off the soil or drainage from any privy or water-closet or any sullage water.
(2) Any person who contravenes subsection (1) shall be liable on conviction to a fine not
exceeding five hundred ringgit and shall also be liable to a further fine not exceeding one
hundred ringgit for every day during which the offence is continued after conviction.
55. Penalty for making unauthorised drains into public canal or stream.
(1) Any person who without the prior written permission of the local authority -
(a) makes or causes to be made any drain into any of the drains or into any canal or stream
under the control of the local authority;
shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding one thousand ringgit, and a Magistrate's
Court on the application of the local authority, shall make a mandatory order requiring the
owner to demolish, alter, re-make or otherwise deal with such drain as the Court thinks fit.
(1) No water-pipe, stack-pipe or down spout used for conveying surface water from any
premises shall be used or be permitted to serve or to act as a ventilating shaft to any drain or
sewer.
(2) Any person who contravenes subsection (1) shall be liable on conviction to a fine not
exceeding five hundred Ringgit and shall also be liable to a further fine not exceeding one
hundred ringgit for every day during which the offence is continued after conviction.
(1) The local authority may erect or fix to any building such pipes as are necessary for the
proper ventilation of the drains and sewers belonging to it.
(2) Such pipes shall be erected so as not to occasion any nuisance or inconvenience to such
building or any building in the neighbourhood.
MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT
Throughout this project, I learned a lot regarding building systems. Through analysis and
research, I learned to identify relevant information related to water and electrical supply,
liquid waste disposal, sanitary and rainwater management system. Furthermore, I learned to
describe the planning of building services within the design and construction limitation . This
project aided in developing my ability to resolve issues related to specific building services
systems.
