Lecture: Recycling

Transcribed audio lecture:

Today, we will be talking about recycling. Because of the increasing

pollution that is happening in our country whether it could be pollution in land,
water, and air. It is necessary to have a clear solution to address this growing
matter since we need to start to solve the problem right away.
Each country is now proposing on the 3Rs, which I will discuss today.
Ill be showing you an illustration of the #3Rs that Im talking about. The 3R
principles stand for Reduce Reuse Recycle.
When we speak of reduce, this means the amount of waste that people
produce is one way of helping the environment. A good example of this is
carpooling. Cars use fuel energy which later on causes pollution. By reducing
the number of cars in the street, we can reduce the pollution being generated
by them.
In reuse principle, used materials can be converted to different
application instead of throwing them right away. One of the most practiced
routines nowadays is the use of cloth bags when going to the grocery instead
of using paper bags or plastic bags. This way, we also help in saving trees.
Lastly, when we recycle, this is using old products into a new item.
One example is turning soda cans or milk cartons into decorative art materials
like vase, pencil holders and many others.
If we will examine, these principles are basically the same. It is just a
matter of using the used materials into different materials and ways. The
primary goal still and the great benefit of it all is still zeroing on how to save
our mother earth. No matter what principle you can use, what matters most is
you are following the principle to help the planet still nourish life - US. Thank
you for listening. I hope you learned something.

Recorded Answer:

Sample response:

There are different ways on how to save our environment. Most countries nowadays
are promoting recycling as means for saving the planet we live in. Basic methods
promoted are 3Rs such as reduce, reuse, recycle. In reducing, we are lessening the
buying or using of materials to prevent over usage of materials. In reusing, things
destine to be thrown are reused to produce another materials for future purpose.
Lastly, recycling is using old products into a new item.

Lecture: Computer Generation

Transcribed audio lecture:

Good morning everyone! Today, we will have a short lecture about our
generation. The world we are in now is an interwoven or interconnected world.
Old system that was built by divisions and walls are not present anymore. The
great web of computerization, satellite communication, the Internet, artificial
intelligence, and other forms of technologies now connects the world.

You belong to the computer generation. Youve probably known about

computers your whole life. But do you know that the earliest computers were
so big that they filled the entire rooms! One of the computers invented was the
UNIVAC 1, which was invented in 1951. Computers started to become
popular with big companies in the 1960s only. It is only on 1980s when
computers became widespread in homes and in schools.
People use computers in many ways. Storeowners use computer to keep
track of their products and check sales in the cash registry. In banks, they use
computers for transactions and transmitting money all around the globe.
Computers help teachers in doing academic research, making lesson plans
and checking the progress of each student. Also, it helps students in doing
research. For scientists, it helps them conduct research and solve problems.
Engineers use computers to make cars, trucks, and airplanes. Architects use
computer to design and conceptualize houses, buildings or any other
structures. The policemen use computers to track down or find criminals by
searching or following a trail. The military uses computers to make and read
colored messages. Lastly, computers let you hook up or connect to networks
(many computers hooked together). They let you hook up or get together to a
worldwide network called the Internet. Thank you for listening. I hope you
learned something.

We cannot deny the fact that we are living nowadays with computer
generation. Everything that we do and everything that we are incorporated with the
use of technology Computers! All walks of life from teachers, students, engineers,
architect, scientist or even military are using computers nowadays. Why? It makes our
lives easier and faster. We can generate faster results because of the technology we
have now. Not to mention, the open communication is something that we need to be
proud of.

Lecture:Cancer
Transcribed audio lecture:

Welcome everyone to the 23rd Health General Assembly! My name is

Tanya. I am the Health Director of Mind Pharmaceuticals. My task for today is
to talk about the leading cause of death nowadays and how are we going to
fight it!

Among all the diseases, the first leading cause of death is heart
disease. Cancer ranks among the top five not only in developed countries but
also in the developing ones. Cancer is primarily a disease of middle and old
age. However, it may occur at any age. What is cancer?

The word cancer comes from a Latin word meaning crab. It was named
because veins and hard tissues extending from the tumor resembled claws of
a crab. Cancer is an abnormal growth of cells that spreads from organ to
organ. In cancer tissue, cell division has gone wild. Great numbers of useless
cells are produced. Before long some healthy organs become unhealthy.
Rapid growth of cells may lead to the formation of a lump called at a tumor.
Some tumors are not cancerous. They are harmless or benign. They do not
spread to other cells or tissues. Moles warts, cysts and corns are examples of
benign tumors. On the other hand, malignant tumors are cancerous. They can
spread through the body and damage healthy cells and tissues.

After many years of scientific research, medical science already

discovered possible natural medicines or alternative medicines to treat cancer
and prevent it from spreading. Medical doctors believe that overexposure to
sunlight, x-rays of radiation, and continuous contact with certain chemicals
can cause cancer.

What are some possible cancer symptoms? These are the following:

1. Bleeding from a natural body opening.

2. Lump on the surface of a body.

3. Sore that does not heal.

4. Sudden increase in the size of mole or wart.

5. Continued hoarseness or cough.

6. Continued indigestion or difficulty in swallowing.

7. Continued change in bowel and bladder habits.

One who has any of the symptoms should consult a doctor for diagnosis. If
discovered in the early stages, some forms of cancer like skin cancer can be
cured. Possible treatments are surgery to remove the cancerous growth,
exposure to X-rays or radiation, or using hormones and special chemicals.
Thank you for listening. I hope you learned something.

Sample response:

Coupled with the many changes that are happening in our environment,
society, and life style, diseases also emerges through time. As we continually
evolve to have a better life, the opposite side of the coin also evolved with us.
Since we know for the fact that these cancer cells are within our body, we
should take precaution on how we can hinder its growth. How? By living our
lives healthy through doing exercises, eating the right nutritious food and
eating with moderation, drink vitamins to supplement the body in fighting
infections and by not abusing our body. We have only one life so we must live
life to the fullest.

Part 1: Writing

Summarize written text

Read the passage below and summarize it using one sentence. Type your response in
the box at the bottom of the screen. You have 10 minutes to finish this task. Your
response will be judged on the quality of your writing and on how well your response
presents the key points in the passage.

Most of the smaller planets in our solar system have a solid surface
made of rock like Earth. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are 4 biggest
planets in the universe that are made of gases. Like Earth, most solid planets
have geographical features. Mars was found to have deserts, polar areas,
volcanoes, valleys, and mountains. Volcanoes are also present in Venus but
the biggest is on Mars. It is called Mount Olympus and it has indeed a
towering twenty-five kilometer height!

There have been many explorations to discover life in the other planets
but nothing living has been found yet. They are either too cold or too hot to
nourish life. Some of them are even made wholly of gases. Planet Earth is so
special for this is the only planet in the universe that is capable of holding life.
Thus, so called The Living Planet.

People are fond of animals. We like animals that are big, tame and
simply have cute physique. However, many people dont like insects because
of their size and unique appearance.
We are not aware that some insects are harmless and helpful to
humans. Without them, our life on earth would be dull and less colorful. Many
pleasing sights and sounds would disappear. We may lose sight of the
beautiful butterfly flying from one flower to another and the fireflies that sheds
its light during the night in search of their mate. Not to mention, the bad effect
of it in birds, fish and other animals that eat insects which lead to death. Also,
flowering plants need them to undergo pollination. Without them, they cannot
spread the pollen, which lead to death as well. Since human beings eat fruits
and vegetables, they would also be affected if the plants will die. Moreover,
dead plants and animals would not rot naturally without the insects that thrive
on them. Indeed, many things could happen if insects are gone.

To live in a fast based modern world, each country is embracing itself

to modernization. Aside from the positive effect of it globally, we cannot hide
the fact that human activities have a great effect upon the environment.
Landforms and water forms are being destroyed just to built factories and
even agricultural lands turning to residential properties. Now, the big question
we are facing is for how long can we continue this modernization scheme?
Will it be healthy for the people?

Total word count:

Sample response:

Living in a fast-based country has its ups and downs. Ups because whatever
your needs are, they are all there just within your reach. You are well known all over
the world because of the popularity of the country you lived in. The positive effects
are reflected by the modernization that is happening within your country. Down side
are the negative effects that happened while building massive structures are impacted
to the people living within the vicinity. To cite an example of basic negative effect of
modernization is when agricultural lands allotted to farming and other areas for
gardening are being transformed into commercial areas where different structures are
built to satisfy the need for modernization. Instead of producing food products for the
country, it was misused. In turn, the people suffer food loss so the government opted
to import rice or other food products just to satisfy the needs of the people. Another
example is when mountains are being quarried or exploded just to meet the increasing
demand for building subdivisions or commercial areas. In return, massive loss in
properties and lives were experienced because of modernization.
In my opinion, to cope with the demand of life nowadays, we should set a
limit as to how far we can go in developing our country. Careful and rigid urban
planning should be done in order to live a balanced life. We are aware that all the
things that we do are coupled with responsibility.

We see and hear advertisements everywhere everyday. This may be in

television, in newspapers, on billboards, and even over the radio. They are
very much needed nowadays by the producers because it helps them
promote their products and inform the market of the benefits that their
products offer.
Advertisements can be very enticing, but we need to double check
whether the advertisement is true or not. How can you show that you are a
wise consumer?

Total word count:

Sample response:

We need to be wise in choosing the product we are using everyday.

Advertisements can lead us to false reality especially if it is presented in good,
entertaining and colorful product. I think proper orientation is a must to be a wise
consumer. You need to read the information behind the lines. You have to look into
the materials used to produce the product. They might have bad effects on our health.
Make a research first of the product. It could help if you read some forums that talk
about the product. Validate the truthfulness of the ad by the statement of the people
who already used the product. I think if proper guidance and awareness is given to the
people, then, we will not be misled in some way.

time and distance.
In addition to it, Newton proved that several colors of the rainbow red,
orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet were present in the beam of
sunlight or white light. He made this possible by conducting an experiment on
letting the white light pass through a small hole into a darkened room and
through a prism. He also invented a reflecting telescope for his own scientific

Babylonians were thus able to develop a complicated structure.

Answer key:

Four thousand years before Christ the ancient Babylonians discovered that
some clay slabs left in the fire became almost as hard as stone. So they shaped bricks
of clay and hardened them by fire to use in building their houses. Because the bricks
were not heavy enough to stay in place when laid on top of each other, the
Babylonians needed a mortar. They melted tar so it would be soft enough to spread
between the bricks. When the tar hardened, it held the bricks together. Babylonians
were thus able to develop a complicated structure.

Lecture: Bullying

Transcribed audio lecture:

What is bullying? How does it happen to anyone?

Good morning everyone. This morning, we are very blessed to have a

guest that will talk about one of the current issue nowadays in education,
which is on bullying. She is an expert on school safety. She earned her
doctoral degree in Harvard University. So let us welcome Dr. Dorothy Yu.
Thank you everyone for your warm welcome. Im Dr. Dorothy Yu, a
clinical psychologist from Michigan University. I am invited to talk about what
is bullying in school is all about.
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior common among school
aged that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. This bad behavior is
repeated or can be repeated through time. Bullying comes in many forms
such as spreading gossips, making threats, attacking someone verbally or
physically and excluding some one from a group of purpose. These conditions
lead to the formulation of such law that would protect the students from
experiencing bullying in any forms.
Anyone can be a victim of bullying. School aged children are very
prone to this because they are very innocent and fragile. This is the time when
the children are continuously developing physically, mentally and socially.
They are the ones so trusting and giving to the point that they dont know if
harm may come their way. They only complain if harm is already been done.
You are very fortunate that Anti-Bullying Law Act of 2013 was signed by
Pres. Benigno Aquino III to address such problem in your country particularly
in school setting. Each school should be equipped with proper training in
identifying bullying in school. As the law states, any institution that will be
caught not following the law will be reprimanded by the constitution.

The birth of anti-bullying law is very timely. It answers the growing needs of the
students to achieve justice in school. Bullying can be a very negative in the sense that
it causes harm to the students can be verbal or non-verbal. Thanks to the author of the
law who thought to protect the majority of the students in school. It is about time to
end the injustices happening in our society. Let us start in school!

Lecture: Global Warming

Transcribed audio lecture:

Good morning everyone! Because of the environmental issues that we

are facing around the globe, we have invited Dr. Luis Yang to discuss with us
the updates on global warming.
Hi! I am Dr. Luis Yang. I am the head of the recently concluded
Environmental Research Team of NASA. My task is to discuss with you about
global warming.
Increase in average temperature of the Earths near-surface air and the
oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation is referred as global
warming. The global average temperature near the Earths surface increases
during the past 100 years. The increased in temperature was likely due to the
observed increase in greenhouse concentrations through the greenhouse
effect. Solar variation combined with volcanoes as natural phenomenon
probably had small warming effects and a small cooking effect from 1950
onward. This event may cause to raise the intensity of extreme weather
events like heavy snowfall, drought, ocean acidification, heat waves, heavy
rainfall with flood, enlargement of deserts, change the amount of precipitation
levels and animal extinction.
We played a great influence on the increase of the temperature of the
earth. As we mentioned earlier, greenhouse gases greatly increased during
the period of Industrial revolution. It was noted that theres an increase of
nitrous oxide, tropospheric ozone, methane, CFC and acid forming from CO2.
An increase of these substances will result to great devastation in the future.
So, to address the concern, governments and private sectors and business
are trying to meet some measures on how we can lessen or prevent the
degradation brought by this global warming. Some of these measures are:
preventing increase of greenhouse gases from deforestation, advocating use
of renewable energy, each country has to propose steps on how to adapt to
the weather, efficient use of energy resources and cooperate globally to its
standards in terms of protecting the environment and natural resources.

Sample response:

It is very timely that we should talk about global warming and draw some steps
or measures to eliminate it or if not lessen it. We have only one planet, which is
Earth. No one can protect this planet, only us! We live in a modern world wherein
some of the natural resources are badly destroyed due to unlawful eradicating
them for our personal gain. As we go on with our human activities, it has great
effect on the environment. We are destroying ourselves. Thus, numerous
tragedies are happening nowadays because of our own wrong doings or selfish
ways not by global warming alone. We are the ones who cause the destruction.
Since the issue is there present in our midst, let us cooperate with other nations
in preventing and lessening the effect of global warming.

The moon is Earths natural satellite. It is one of the gigantic satellites

in the solar system orbited with the planet. The word month, in fact, comes
from the Old English word mona, meaning moon. It was regarded as a
goddess by the ancient people and was often used to measure time. Men of
medieval times thought the moon was a perfect, smooth sphere in the
heavens. Actually, the surface of the moon is covered with craters, deep pits,
many of which are several miles wide. On the side of the Moon that faces the
Earth are several huge plains called seas. These seas are dry, flat areas
strewn with boulders and pitted with small craters, and covered with a thin
layer of coarse dust.
The moon is in synchronous rotation with the earth. It rotates in the
axis as same time with the planet. As a result, it keeps the same face turned
towards us. The face that is near the earth is called the near side, and the
opposite side is the far side. It is the moon that borrows light from the sun.
The near side of the moon is seen in the planet due to the borrowed light from
the side. On the other hand, the far side illustrates the dark side for the light
cannot pass through it.

Which of these statements about the moon are true?

o The moon as perceived by earlier times has smooth surface looking

from afar.

o The moons face is always turning towards us. Its only the light from
the sun makes it visible for us to see.

o Compared with other natural satellites, the moon showed similar

physical features like what we have on planet earth.

o The moons relative size is one of the largest natural satellites orbiting
the solar system.

o With moons similar physical conditions with the earth, it can already hold
life.

same issue: Todays teenage boys are not that happy with their physical
appearance based on latest statistics. Surrounding by advertising featuring
well-muscled and semi-clad young men, teenage boys are now experiencing
what young ladies have been coping with for years. They are not confident
that they can meet the expectation of medias idealized image of their gender.
Young boys who suffered the most are the ones below the average height,
weight or both. Often they are brutally teased by their peers. Some react to
their ridicule by heading towards the gym to lift weights. Yet, even those who
successfully bulk up dont like the feeling of being worthless if they lose their
hard-won muscle tone. Others were convinced that no amount of bodybuilding
could help, often lead them to withdraw from social connection with their
friends. This is their way of avoiding ridicule about their size and shape. Still,
they are angry at being badly treated because of their body type.

Which statements described the given audio?

Teenage boys today are showing more apprehension about their

physical image than did boys of previous generations.

Advertisements help the youth to become more beautiful by the

products it is selling.

Those teenagers doing bodybuilding are more attractive than the boys

Iceland has its own distinction. It is covered by ice, glaciers and

geysers and has got more than 20 active volcanoes. It also has many
waterfalls, hot springs, mud pools and geothermal vents. Thus, land of frost
and fire arose. This is a very fitting name, for the mountains on this island are
ice-capped though out the year, and there are scores of active volcanoes too.
Icelands climate is not extremely cold; most days are quite pleasant because
of the warm current of the Gulf Stream.

Why has Iceland been called the land of frost and fire?

Its topographical location speaks of glacial mountains with fiery hot active
volcanoes on the other side.

The country is located near the South Pole having cold temperature and
heat condition of surrounding bodies of water.

Cold air circulates the whole land while warm air stays on top region of the
mountains.

Cold air emitted by the icy mountains over shadowing the land thus the
countrys climate is mostly low.

Social insects are insects that form communities. Honeybees, wasps,

ants and termites are insects that live in groups.
In a colony of bees, three kinds of bees are present. There is an egg-
laying female or queen. She lays fertilized and unfertilized eggs. The fertilized
egg hatches into a worker and the unfertilized egg into a drone. The queen
lays each egg in a cell. After the eggs hatch, the larva is fed by workers called
nurses. The larva is given a jelly-like food. The nurses secrete this food from
their mouths.
After a few days, the larva weaves a cocoon around itself. This
becomes a pupa. The workers cover each cell with a cap made from wax. The
pupa stays there for three weeks. If the bee is already mature, it cuts itself
through the cap and it crawls out of the cell.
An adult honeybee has four wings. It has two antennae. It has
mouthparts for sucking and chewing. Workers have sting for defense and
offense. The queen has a small sting. The drone has none. If a worker bee
stings an enemy, the bee soon dies. This happens because the sting and
other parts of its body are pulled out.
The bees tongue is adapted for sucking nectar from flower. It has
smooth mandibles for gathering pollen. It has flat and thin hind legs with tiny
hairs for carrying load of pollen. Bees are useful because they make honey
and wax.

Which statement best described the content of the recording?

Queen bees control all the movements of its colony.
The developmental stages of the bees clearly explained how bees perform
their work and its importance to the environment.
Honey and wax are beneficial to colonies of bees.
Each life stages of bees are prerequisite to one another.
