7. (a) Discuss the general yielding mode of failure. Explain:- elastic-perfectly plastic; nonlinear;
lower bound load; and upper bound for the general yielding mode of failure. Distinguish
fully plastic load for an axial member and the plastic moment for a beam subjected to pure
bending.
(b) Sketch the stress-strain distribution for elastic plastic yielding of a beam. Also calculate the
bending moment in the elastic-plastic state. The beam has rectangular cross section with
width b and height h.
(c) At a critical point in a machine part, the nonzero components of stress are xx=120MPa,
yy=50MPa, and xy=50MPa. The yield strength of the material is y=300MPa.
Determine the factor of safety in the design based on the maximum shear stress criterion
and that based on the octahedral shear stress criterion.

8. (a) A beam as shown in Fig. 8 is subjected to pure bending. The material has a yield point y.
Determine the ratio of the plastic moment and the maximum elastic moment.
(b) Assuming that the beam is unloaded elastically from its fully plastic state determine the
residual stress distribution in the beam cross section. Give neat sketches.
