My Four Discourse Communities

When I first learned about discourse communities, I would have never thought that I was

part of so many discourse communities. They are all unique in their own way and include a wide

variety of people, cultures and communities. I am proud to be part of these four discourse

communities.

The first discourse community that I am part of is fantasy football. Me and my friends

created a fantasy football league in which we each drafted our own team based on real-life NFL

players. Based on their performance we get points, and whoever gets the most points that week

wins. We communicate through the chat on the application for fantasy football either on a

computer or our mobile devices. To be part of this community you need access to the Internet,

and can draft at a certain date and time. This discourse community uses all the terms that are

used in football, so you must be knowledgeable with the sport. The next discourse community

that I am part of is the University of Texas at El Paso student discourse community. As a

member of this community, you must follow the rules set by the UTEP administration. The

common goal set by anyone attending this university is to earn their degree by graduating and

being successful in life with a good job. Most communication takes place through the email

address that the university provides you with once you are admitted, and most assignments are

submitted through Blackboard. Most students call the Undergraduate Learning Center the

UGLC, and use terms such as the union or the plaza to meet up. The third discourse
community that I will talk about is Burger King. As an employee at Burger King, the common

goal set by all employees is the companys mission statement, which is, To offer reasonably

priced quality food, served quickly, in attractive, clean surroundings. In order to become a

member of this discourse community you have to either apply online through their website, or

show up in person and ask for an application. We communicate by talking to each other, but

have jargon that is not usually heard anywhere else, such as Whopper and Chicken Fries. The

final discourse community that I have talked about in my map is my family. As part of a

Hispanic family, I am used to speaking Spanish at home, which leads to jargon that is widely

used in this area, such as mijo and mija, which is in replacement of son and daughter. Our goal is

basically to love each other and support one another. The only way of joining is either by

marriage or birth.

Throughout my life I have been part of numerous discourse communities without even

realizing it. These communities have shaped me to be the way I am to be and will continue to

help me prepare for the future. Although I may not be part of some of these communities in the

future, as life goes on, I will be joining new ones that will continue to guide me in my life.
