Flap Foldable Related Rates Graded HW due Oct 13th

(This assignment counts as 2 Homework Grades!)

Use a file folder to contain 12 of the 24 Related Rates word problems

from the 3 on line links.

Inside Foldable Instructions:

Within the file folder, put 6 hexagonal flaps on each side of the folder. Your
mission is to select 12 different problems to represent the overall scope of related
rates problems. Each problem needs to be represented using the
Picture Set up Work Answer format.

File Folder Cover Instructions:

Your name and an ORIGINAL related rates problem dealing with a food item
completely worked out on the front cover. A list of the problem numbers selected
from each link listed across the bottom of the cover.

Modeling and Optimization

Optimization
This merely means find a maximum or minimum. For instance, how
can Nestle minimize the amount of plastic used in their 12 oz bottles?
How can you make a box that is the smallest size for a particular volume?
How can you fence pastureland with the least amount of fencing material
but giving the maximum amount of space for the cows inside?

Hint: finding a max or min, just means finding a derivative, setting it

equal to zero, and determining if that critical location is a max or a min
HW Optimization Show all work to achieve credit..

1. A tank with a rectangular base and rectangular sides is to be open at

the top. It is to be constructed so that its width is 4 meters and
volume is 36 cubic meters. If building the tank cost $10 per sq
meter for the base and $5 per sq meter for the sides, what is the cost
of the least expensive tank?

2. You have 40 feet of fence to enclose a rectangular garden. What is

the maximum area that you can enclose?

3. A closed box with a square base is to have a volume of 2000 cubic

in. The material for the top and bottom of the box is to cost $3 per
sq in, and the material for the sides is to cost $1.50 per sq in. If the
cost of the material is to be the least, find the dimensions of the box.

4. A window is in the shape of a rectangle surmounted by a semicircle.

Find the dimensions when the perimeter is 12 meters and the area is
as large as possible.

5. You have 40 feet of fence to enclose a rectangular garden along the

side of a barn. What is the maximum area that you can enclose?

6. A carpenter is building an open box with a square base for holding

firewood. The box must have a surface area of 8 m2. What dimensions
will yield the maximum volume? What is the maximum volume?

7. A rectangular rose garden will be surrounded on 3 sides by a brick

wall and by a fence on the fourth side. The area of the garden will be
1000 m2. The cost of the brick wall is $192/m. The cost of the fencing
is $48/m. Find the dimensions of the garden so that the cost of the
materials is as small as possible.
8. A log cabin is to be built with two equal rooms of area 12 m 2 each.
What is the best shape for the cabin, so that the total length of walls and
partition is a minimum?

9. A builder must subdivide four adjacent rectangular building lots, each

of 540 m 2 , and enclose them with fences. If the back and side fencing
costs $10/ meter and the front fencing costs $20/ meter, find the least
cost he must incur?

10. A printed page of total area 320 m 2 has top and side margins of 2 cm
and a bottom margin of 3 cm. Find the dimensions of the page that make
the area of print a maximum.

11. A rectangular metal plate 20 cm by 40 cm will have a square cut

from each corner, and the flaps formed will bend upward at right angles
to make an open topped rectangular box. Find the dimensions of the box
in order to have a volume that will be a maximum.

12. An open rectangular box is to made with a square base and a volume
of 4000 cm3 . Find the dimensions of the box so that the side and bottom
material for it will have a minimum area.

13. Find the circular cylinder of greatest volume that can be inscribed in
a right circular cone with altitude 20 cm and diameter of base 10 cm.

14. A Norman window contains a rectangular pane of glass surmounted

with a semi-circular pane with diameter equal to the topmost side of the
rectangle. Find the dimensions of a Norman window of perimeter 12 m
which has the greatest possible area of glass.
