On being a Teaching Assistant

When I started as a teaching assistant at University X, I had no experience in teaching

beyond a few private tutoring and volunteer work. After 3 years of working as a TA, I
have come so far in my teaching abilities, acquired many skills, some of them come from
the Graduate Certificate course I took about Foundation of teaching.

I admit that, in the beginning, I felt uncomfortable to speak in front of a class full of
undergraduate students. I found it hard to get students attention properly, specially
teaching those who are not interested in the class was really difficult. I learnt to
communicate with the students, figure out the problems and take care of them as much as
possible. Once I know about my students, I do not feel uncomfortable to speak in front of
them no matter how huge the classroom is.

When I was a student, I always impressed by the endless knowledge of our professors.
But after teaching for 5-6 semesters now I am confident in the knowledge I have.
Sometimes students ask interesting and surprising questions and even though I cant
answer all of them on that moment I incorporate them later as a discussion point.

During 3 years of working as a teaching assistant I received many emails from students
asking about class quizzes, final grades and makeup labs. In my first year, as a grader, I
was really hard on students and peaky about giving them partial credits. After grading a
few assignments, our course instructor set up a meeting and explained how a few extra
points might help a student to get a good grade and that will help them in future. I was
frustrated by his decision because to me, they should only get the grades they deserve.
But after some time, I realized sometimes few extra points in the assignments motivate
them to study harder for the finals.

My experience gave me new strength in my teaching. One of those strength is to arrange

lecture materials such a way that will attract students to the class. Using boring slides
with lots of equations is not always the best way to teach. Sometimes adding relevant
cartoon, jokes and related stories can really catch their attention. Sometimes when a
student does not understand a topic, I try to use day to day example that finally lets the
student understand the concept. Other than my personal experience, the graduate
certification course on foundation of teaching taught me a lot. I learned how to foster a
more dynamic classroom and teaching techniques that will keep the students more
engaged in classroom.

Teaching is a passion, labor of love. I am moving forward with my formal education and
have learned about learning styles. I am currently learning how to structure a lesson,
making syllabus and engage student more to the class. Now I have more control over my
class. I believe these techniques I have learned can be useful outside of the class as well.
All of these experiences will help me to grow and reach my goals a leader and as a
successful person as well.
