Reflection (Jn 6:51-58)

Jesus expands on his statement that he is the bread of life. To take in the bread of life we
must eat his flesh and drink his blood. This is the only way to eternal life. Jesus lives
because of the living Father who sent him. Similarly anyone who feeds on him will live
forever. These words must have been shocking for the Jews who heard them. At a literal
level, Jesus is promoting some form of cannibalism. To feed on his flesh and drink his
blood is to take him completely into our lives. It is a metaphor for being completely
dependent on him for our life. This is a daily dependence. Just as we need food every
day for our bodies to prosper, we need to constantly take more of Jesus into our life.
How do we feed on Jesus? Constant communion with him has many facets- prayer,
listening, reading the Scriptures, obedience. These things need to be as natural to our
life as breathing and eating.

Jesus gives us His Body and Blood to nourish our souls. We need His nourishment so we
can continue His ministry. As the Father sent me, I send you The Father sent Jesus
out of love; we enter into our lives, our ministry, for the same reason.
