THE GOD OF PHILOSOPHY AND OF THE BIBLE

According to the Regensburg Address of Pope Benedict XVI, the God of the Bible and the

God of Philosophy do not have to be taken as distinct persons, rather both are the same and one

reality. There are attempts to separate the two as distinct from each other, such is the teaching

of Martin Luther and the teaching of some Philosophers. There is also the concern of trying to

envision God as what the pagans had perceived from of old because of the use of Philosophy.

There is an interesting quote from Saint Thomas Aquinas in the article which explains that When

one use philosophy in service to the faith, one does not mix water with wine; one changes water

into wine. (124)

Our faith leads us to believe in God while our reason helps us to understand what is the

real nature of God is. Theology and Philosophy are not contradicting sources of truth, but it goes

hand in hand. Reason, as a gift coming from the Creator, shows us and explains to us, even in a

glimpse, the mystery and wonders of God.
