DESIGN FROM
CHILDHOOD
The process began with Tromans choosing
a story from her childhood, before making
sketches and photography of relevant details
and textures - the focus being on form, shape
and the tiniest details. In her own words,
Theres no better feeling than polishing
my pieces and the texture twinkling back at

CLASSIC THEMES
This solid silver pocket watch-style case with
an enamelled lid is based on the literary classic
by Lewis Carroll, and was designed so it had
a purpose when the jewellery inside was not
being worn
DIGITAL TOOLS
FOR ORGANIC
SHAPES
The design uses three main software tools:
Rhino 5.0, Matrix 8.0 and Artcam R2. Rhino
for building the main shapes and structure,
while Artcam adds textures and organic shapes
to the surfaces. Matrix is mainly used for
rendering purposes so she can get a feel for
how the piece is going to look in metal
JEWELLERY BOX
It houses a silver playing card soldiers ring,
an Alice pendant and a Mad Hatters tea table
pendant. A turning base plate lets you hide
and reveal the ring and it also reveals a laser
engraved poem as you turn it
CASTING
The wax model is sent to be cast in precious
metal in Birminghams prestigious Jewellery

castings, and Wardles who specialise in large
scale castings, with both companies combined
offering over a century of expertise

n early May a press release came
through from Optis regarding a
project that it had undertaken
in conjunction with Airbus. If
youve not come across Optis
before, its a French outfit that has built
a reputation for providing high-end
visualisation technology, typically
used in the automotive and aerospace
industries. The project (which has
since become commercial) focussed on
combining the benefits of todays lower
cost, more immersive VR head mounted
displays (HMDs) with both haptic
feedback and audio simulation.
The end result is a system that not only
allows you to immerse yourself in the
visual representation of a virtual model
and environment but, with smart use of
haptic feedback and audio simulation,
allows you to walk around a product too.
This means you can gain feedback as your
digital fingers touch a hard surface as well
as experiencing the sound emitted from
that product. And the latter is not just an
accompanying sound file, but a truly 3D 1
simulated representation of the acoustic
quality of the product and its surroundings.
Considering Optis core market, this combination of how it feels in your hand this type of work that Optis and Airbus are
