Michael Fred Phelps II4 (Baltimore, Maryland, June 30, 1985) is an American
swimmer5 and the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time, with a total of 28
medals.6 Phelps also holds the records for the most Olympic medals of gold
(23), 13 gold medals in individual events and 15 Olympic medals in men's
events.
In the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, after winning eight gold medals, Phelps
was established as the highest gold medalist in a single edition of the games.
Five of those medals were in individual events. At the London 2012 Olympic
Games, Phelps won four gold medals and two silver medals, becoming the
athlete with the most medals for the games for the third time in a row.
The titles and records of Phelps have allowed him to be recognized as
Swimmer of the Year six times and American Swimmer of the Year eight times.
His Olympic performance in 2008 earned him the Sportsman of the Year award
given by Sports Illustrated magazine. And he is considered the best swimmer of
all time.
After the 2008 Olympic Games, Phelps started the Michael Phelps Foundation,
focused on the development of swimming and promoting healthy lifestyles.
