Fall 2017 — Prof. Oliver Bühler

Mid-term exam
19. October 2017
All questions carry equal credit.
Good luck!

1. Find the solution y(x) for x ≥ 0 to the initial-value problem

y 0 + 2 y = x2

with initial data y(0) = 0.

2. Find the linear second-order homogeneous constant-coefficient differential equation

whose general solution is given by

y(x) = A exp(x) + B exp(−2x) (1)

where (A, B) are constants. Repeat in the case of

y(x) = A exp(x) + Bx exp(x). (2)

3. Find the solution y(x) for x ≥ 0 to the initial-value problem

(1 + x) y 00 + y = 0 (3)

with initial data

y(0) = 1 and y 0 (0) = 0 (4)
using the power series

an x n .
X
y(x) = (5)
n=0

Compute the values of (a0 , a1 , a2 , a3 ).

4. For a linear second-order homogeneous equation of the form

y 00 + p(x)y 0 + q(x)y = 0 (6)

define the Wronskian W (y1 , y2 ), state its significance for solutions of (6), and derive
the differential equation satisfied by W (x). Find W (x) for equation (3).
