Educational Philosophy:
I always try to create a memorable educational experience for all of my students when they walk into my classroom. It was my experience with the
National Board Certification process that motivated and redirected my teaching to teach each and every individual student in my class. Although there are
many different learning styles within a group of students, I believe that students learn, remember and have more enjoyable educational experiences when
they have hands on opportunities to learn. That is one of the reasons I feel very strong about music education.
One of the most important things for an educator to do is to keep educating themselves! One of my favorite quotes is by a Zen Master… “Teachers,
continue to polish your lanterns, so that others may follow its light.” Professional development is essential for staying current in your field, learning new and
different teaching methods, rejuvenating your educational focus and beliefs in children, and to keep your teaching fresh and motivating for your students. The
mentoring experience should not end with the first year in the job. I believe strongly in having multiple mentors that you look to for guidance, answers,
inspiration and modeling. These mentors can be right in your workplace or a phone call away. For me, my mentors range from accomplished teachers,
college professors, business leaders, successful administrators, and inspiring leaders in many fields outside of education as well.
Change is the central theme to my educational philosophy. Teachers should especially seek to improve their ways, learn from others, develop new
methods and in turn present a better product to their students. Change can be a positive experience and strengthening factor if implemented properly. It is
important to understand the culture of an organization, to develop a sense of urgency, create a coalition of support, develop a vision, articulate and share that
vision clearly with all the participants involved, to empower people, create short-term wins and celebrate and bank those successes, then reflect and plan for
new change to take place.
Being an educational leader is one of the most important jobs in the world. I believe in ensuring that every student, teacher, parent, and community
member that I encounter is treated fairly and is respected as I share with them my passion for teaching, inspire them to become more involved in the
educational community or in leading and motivating the forces that change and produce an excellent learning environment for all students. Being a teacher
and leader who engages in reflective practice is going to be the single most important key to help in creating the urgency for change that is needed to
guarantee even more successful teaching.
1987-2016: Numerous Excellent and Superior music awards with performing ensembles and domestic and international travel experience.

Keith’s career background and credentials project excellence in musicianship as a leader, conductor, and
educator. He is highly respected by his colleagues. I have observed his outstanding work as a clinician
and conductor for many years. He is an extremely well organized individual whose poised, gentlemanly
leadership and conducting style surround his commitment to artistic performance and expectations. His
superb achievements along with his state and national presentations support the value our profession
holds for his musicianship and musical standards.
Dating back to the 1980s, from his time as a percussion student in the band, through his years as a Music
Education student, and then long career as a consummate Music Educator, I have known Keith Hodgson
to be one of our most dedicated and inspiring torch-bearer/Teachers of Music. With knowledge, support
and encouragement, Keith creates success after success by exacting much from his students and adult
community band members. He has been a mentor to many Teachers, and has proven to be a worthy model
and resource to all of his New Jersey colleagues.
In the spring of 2017, after a national search was completed by The University of the Arts for an Assistant
Professor of Music Education, Keith was named to this position and began his higher education career at
UARTS in Fall 2017. His strengths as an educator, musician, conductor, and leader in music education are at
the heart of why he was selected for this position. Keith’s service and contributions to the New Jersey Music
Educators Association and the National Association for Music Education exemplify his dedication to our
profession beyond the classroom. His drive and vision for advocacy and the advancement of music in
education is evidenced in the work he has done both locally and nationally.
