    IME 222 – Engineering Graphics

    Prerequisite Quiz - Study Guide

    Quiz on Tuesday 08/31/10

    The prerequisite for IME 222 is Math 123 – College Trigonometry. The prerequisite quiz is
    intended to determine students’ retention of material covered in Math 123. To prepare for the quiz,
    refresh your memory in trigonometric relations and their applications, including:

    • Trigonometric functions of an arbitrary angle x and their applications (e.g. sin x, cos x, tan x, etc.)
    • Relationships among angle trigonometric functions (e.g. tan x = sin x/cos x, etc.)
    • Pythagorean relations (e.g. sin2x + cos2x = 1)
    • Angle sum and angle difference relationships (e.g. sin (x+y) = sinx cosy + cosx siny)
    • Double angle relationships (e.g. sin2x = 2sinx cosx)
    • Solutions for right angle triangles
    • Solutions for circles
    • Length of Chord (important)
    • Length of circular arc
    • Cartesian Coordinates

    Examples (Quiz is not limited to these examples):

    1. For a circle of radius R = 1, if AB = 0.5, determine:


    The angle α D
    The length of circular arc DC

    Angle α is determined by: α = sin-1 AB/AD
    α = sin-1 0.5/1.0 = 30o β

    Length of arc DC is determined by:
    DC = R*β where R is radius and β is in radians
    β = 90 - α = 60o = 60*π /180 = 1.05 radians
    DC = 1*1.05 = 1.05 in

    Length of line DB is determined by:


    DB = AD*cosα = 1*cos30 = 0.86 in

    2. Convert the following angles to decimal numbers:


    36o 24’ 45” = 36.0000 + 24/60 + 45/(60*60) = 36.4125o
    60o 30” = 60 .0000 + 0/60 + 30/(60*60) = 30.0083o

    3. For the triangle shown below, AB = 5”, BC = 3”, and AC = 4”. C

    a. What is angle BAC?


    b. What is the diameter of the circle that
    passes through point A, B and C? A B
    This is a right triangle because AB2 = AC2 + BC2, the angle ACB = 90o
    Angle BAC = tan-1 BC/AC = 38.87o
    Diameter of circle that passes through ACB is side AB = 5 in.

    4. You are required to determine the height of a tall pine tree. It is a sunny day and you can easily
    see the tree’s shadow on the ground. The tools you have are a 6-in pencil, a measuring tape, a
    calculator and your knowledge of trigonometry. Explain how you will solve this problem. Use a
    sketch to show your solution.

    Let a = length of pencil (known), b = length of pencil’s shadow (measure)


    Let c = height of tree (unknown), b+d = length of tree’s shadow (measure)
    Using similar triangles, you can write:
