unknowns:
Es = E0 + S log (Cs/Ciso)
E1 = E0 + S log [(Cs + dC1)/Ciso]
E2 = E0 + S log [(Cs+ dC1+ dC2)/Ciso]
Es, E1, E2 have been determined during the
calibration procedure. The microprocessor solves
these three equations giving the values of S and
E0. This data is stored for use during on-line
monitoring to convert the measured potential in
the sample into concentration values either in ppm

CALIBRATION
Maximum system accuracy is ensured through a
fast, easy, and accurate calibration performed in
the expected sample range. This calibration
procedure uses equipment supplied in Equipment
Calibration Kit (Cat. No. 181148). If operator is not
familiar with pipet equipment and technique,
review guide in calibration kit. Proper pipetting
technique is crucial to calibration. See Figure 18
for flow diagram during calibration.
Before performing Double-Known Addition:
1. Perform Monthly Maintenance procedure
including conditioning of electrode. Wait at
least one hour after changing reagent or
etching electrode. Calibration must be
initiated within 2-3 hours of electrode etching
to ensure faster response.
2. Check to ensure calibration concentration
increments (P2, P3) and flow cell volume (P4)
are properly programmed. These three values
will be sequentially displayed with each
successive press of program key.
3. Check that present sample concentration is Figure 18: Flow Diagram During Calibration
equal or less than P2(20 ppb); if not,
calibration can still be performed with a loss in
accuracy as long as background
concentration is not significantly larger.
Accuracy can be attained if alternate
standards are employed but P2 should not be
less than 10 ppb.
4a. If signal conditioner module is attached, output
can be deactivated during calibration
procedure by pressing test key on signal
conditioner keypad.
4b. If optional alarm module is attached it will
automatically go into deactivate mode upon
entering calibration mode. It will not
automatically go into activate mode after
calibration. The sample key must be pressed
to reactivate.

Rinsing of Flow Cell

The flow cell may require rinsing after calibration
to avoid noise when measuring very low sodium
levels. To do this, disconnect the air pump intake
tube and rinse the flow cell and electrodes with
D.I. water by lifting the flow cell cap for access.
Re-connect air pump intake tube before Figure 19: Pipet Inserted into Calibration Port.

Once the enter/done key is pressed to accept
the adjusted value for the off-line calibration, P0

correction was previously used, P1 will display the
last blank value.

is “locked up,” the PMA (main computer) board
should be reset according to the following
procedure.
Sometimes what appears to be an electronics
problem really isn’t; instead the analyzer is merely
“confused.”
This type of problem often shows up during
calibration procedure.
For example, if a calibration is attempted with
incorrect standards or defective electrodes, the
electronics will attempt to determine slope and
E0 and may end up with abnormal values; i.e.,
E0 = +150 and slope = 1.0. Even if standards or
electrodes are replaced with good ones, the
calibration may still be impossible. Reset the PMA
board according to the following steps:
1. Turn power to analyzer OFF.
2. Loosen the four screws holding keypad and let
it hang loose by its ribbon cable.
