Course syllabus

Synopsis:

This course introduces students to the concept of RF and Microwave engineering. In the beginning,
students will be introduced to the concept of transmission lines and waveguides. Then the design of
each passive component such as matching network, coupler, divider and resonator will be discussed.

Course contents

Week 1 : Introduction to RF and Microwave Engineering

RF and Microwave spectrum, Applications of RF and Microwave, Biological


effects and safety

Week 2-4 : Transmission Lines

Theory of Transmission Lines: Lumped-element circuit model for a


transmission line, Field analysis of transmission lines, Terminated lossless
transmission line , The Smith chart, Quarter wave transformer, Generator
and load mismatches, Lossy transmission lines.

Configurations: Types of transmission lines, Planar structures: Stripline,


Microstrip, coplanar lines.

Week 5-6 : Waveguides

Parallel plate waveguide, Rectangular waveguide, Circular waveguide,

Week 7-9 : Impedance Matching


Matching with lump element, Single stub matching, Double stub matching,
Quarter wave transformer, Binomial Multisection Matching Transformers,
Chebyshev Multisection Matching Transformers.
Week 10-11 : Microwave Resonators
Series and parallel resonant circuits, Transmission line resonator, Dielectric
resonator

Week 12-15 : Power Dividers and Directional Couplers
Properties of Dividers and couplers, T junction power divider, Wilkinson
power divider, Quadrature (900) Hybrid, Coupled Line directional coupler,
Lange coupler, 1800 hybrid.
