Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: My Favorite Person in Georgia History

Content Area: Social Studies
Grade Level(s): 2nd

Content Standard Addressed: SS2H1 The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures
in Georgia history.
a. Identify the contributions made by these historic figures: James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary
Musgrove (founding of Georgia); Sequoyah (development of a Cherokee alphabet); Jackie Robinson
(sports); Martin Luther King, Jr. (civil rights); Jimmy Carter (leadership and human rights)

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Constructor: Students critically curate a variety of resources
using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning
experiences for themselves and others.
a. Plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their
intellectual or creative pursuits

Selected Technology Tool: Bubbl.us

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Universal Design for Learning could be implemented into this lesson by
providing an area where students can organize their thoughts in a way that makes sense to them while still
following directions. They can use multiple means for gathering research including any of the tools available
to them. Bubbl.us does a great job of also being user friendly and engaging because it allows students to
create something of their own. In order to minimize distraction, I could allow students to work on this in
smaller groups in a lab instead of a whole class if it is needed. I can also provide a premade template to get
them started if they are having trouble understanding where to start their organizer.
Lesson idea implementation:
Bubbl.us will be used to have students show their knowledge on the life and contributions of their
favorite Georgia historical person. To open the lesson, I will start a group discussion on what are the things
we may already know about some of these people. This will provide students with some background
information about each person so that they can get an idea about what person they may want to do their
assignment on.
Guidelines for this assignment include using bubbl.us to create a graphic organizer to demonstrate
knowledge on the life of their person, contributions, and any interesting facts about them. Requirements are
that they must include a picture and a URL of a fun video that helps describes their person. This project
should take them about 5 days to complete and will be given to them on Monday to be due by Friday.
The final product will be used to inform all students on the different important historical figures. On
Friday, we will present the graphic organizers in groups of 4 or 5. I can differentiate this lesson to support all
learners of the classroom by allowing students to work in partners if needed, or even allow them to have

personal time with myself to help get started in the right direction. I can extend student learning to a higher
level of learning by asking them to relate their person’s contributions to an event that has happened in
history. To conclude the lesson, we will share what we liked and disliked about the project so that I can get
feedback as to whether they thought this tool was beneficial for them or not as beneficial. With this
information I will know whether or not this tool is effective to use with my students.
I plan to provide feedback with a rubric and individual conferencing. I would like to provide feedback
based on how the information was organized, the importance or relevance of the information, and overall
presentation of the assignment.
Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson, I feel as though the activity that I created could impact student learning in a
positive manner. For example, they could use this in other areas of study and even could carry this tool later
on in their schooling by helping them organize their learning! I plan on furthering the lesson by moving what
they have learned within this standard to the next part of the standard (b. Describe how everyday life of these
historical figures is similar to and different from everyday life in the present (food, clothing, homes,
transportation, communication, recreation, rights, and freedoms). Other technology tools that could further
enhance this project could be to use discoveryeducation.com or a narrated PowerPoint in the next part of the
lesson. This would help tell a full story of the person that they have chosen.
