Gayle is a new admission to Harvest Manor Nursing Center. She is an 86 year old widow. Her only son
lives in England. She fell down the basement steps on a Friday afternoon and broke her hip. She laid
on the basement floor until Monday. The postal carrier heard her crying and called for help.
She was admitted to the hospital for a hip replacement and discharged to the nursing home. Despite
her ordeal she is doing relatively well and hopes to return to her home in 2 to 3 months.
Gayle has been healthy all of her life. She has never had major surgery until her hip replacement. She
does not have any chronic diseases. Her doctor orders a low fat low cholesterol calorie controlled diet.
Why do you think the doctor ordered this diet for Gayle? Explain why you agree or do not agree with
this diet order.
Gayle is eating <50% of her low fat low cholesterol calorie controlled diet. She has lost 10 lbs in 3
weeks. She tells you the food is tough and tasteless.
