Inline logs VS, standard JFS2 logs pros/cons

We are having a discussion at work on the benefits of inline logging vs JFS2 logging.
Would you mind sharing you experiences and reccomendations with each type of log
file? If it matters, we run both Oracle and DB2 but mostly Oracle. $0.00

I assume the real question was about benefits of inline logging vs. outline
for JFS2 file systems. Inline is created by crfs command and has one to one Companies

relationship to file system it was created with, where is outline log can
service multiple file systems and created with by mklv command. So in
nutshell you have greater flexibility when you are using inline logging,
don't have to worry about the size of it and has less management overhead as BUY OUR TOP PRODUCTS
compared to standard outline logging. One obvious benefit is that inline log

help to identify the placement and how busy logs are. As of Oracle 10g the
recommendation is to use inline logs.(see above). as of 11g r2 I would
probably go with ASM for Oracle data.

I think inline log is a very good idea but just for save some admin work...
If you think it well, each time an update to the log is needed the same logical volume

The flexibility of jfs2log is sometimes a benefit to get better performance.
Let say a filesystem has abundant inode change and if the filesystem has
separate jfs2log, a disk can be dedicated to log operation. This will
prevent disk heads from moving to data and log locations so many times.
But generally I prefer inline logs for easier system administration.

Mehdi

Thank you all for your replies and thoughts on this subject.
It would seem that for most cases, not all, but most, using inline logging is the way to
go.
But a few questions remain:
In the case where there is corruption on a filesystem with inline logging, is the ability
to recover affected by the inline log? Are there any different steps that would need to
be taken to recover?
Has anyone had to recover a filesystem using inline logs?
I would guess that the chance of corruption of an inline log vs. the jfs2log is the same
so this should not be taken in to account when deciding on what log to use.
Again, thanks for your thoughts.
Thanks,
Joe

The short answer is no, but as always 'it all depends'.. As far as I can tell
the fsck has been rewritten for jfs2 around 5.3TL3 to address the majority
of faults associated with the introduction of inline logging. From the
experience and the fact that file systems corruptions these days are few and
between (hm, better hardware I guess and better practices ) there is no much
differences in recovery process between inline and jfs2log . But then again,
that's my observation and experience with jfs2 in the last years.
