Clipper fatality buried at sea

Tragedy struck the Clipper Round the World race this month with
the report of the fatality of Simon Speirs, a crew member on board
CV30, (Great Britain) on Sunday 18 November.
Simon, 60, a keen sailor from Bristol, was on the foredeck
assisting with a headsail change when he was washed overboard.
The Clipper Race reports that he was clipped on with his safety
tether, but became separated from the yacht in the Southern
Ocean in a rough sea state, in 20 knots of wind gusting 40.
The team managed to recover Simon within 36 minutes, at which
point CPR was administered by three medically trained crew, which
included a GP, but he never regained consciousness. The cause of

death is unconfirmed at this time but thought to be by drowning.

With thousands of miles to the nearest land, a sea burial was
carried out with the agreement of Simon’s family. Our thoughts are

NEW THERMALITE WETSUITS

I’m a big fan of your Lennon Racewear, with two tops and one long john
purchased in the last 12 months. As a “Master” sailor racing in harsh Irish
conditions I have, to be honest, found it bit of a game-changer, especially for
2nd and 3rd back to back races. I used to suffer from forearm (especially) and
leg cramps but no more! It’s also really flexible which is great since the Laser
is worked so hard downwind these days as you know.

The above is heartfelt thanks and feedback.

I
n 1611 Dutch explorer Hendrik
Brouwer halved the time of the
passage from Holland to Java
(Indonesia) by sailing down the
west coast of Africa and round the
Cape of Good Hope. He then sailed
in a band of westerly winds in the
latitudes 40-50 degrees, later called the
Roaring Forties, across the lower Indian
Ocean. He stepped off the conveyor
belt approaching Australia and sailed
up to Batavia (Jakarta). He then sailed
back down to the Forties to continue
eastwards across the Pacific and under
Cape Horn and up the Atlantic to home.
Starting in Europe with destinations in
Australia and New Zealand, the Roaring
Forties became the famed Clipper
freight highway of the 19th century.
While similar wind systems occur
in the northern hemisphere, the lack
of land in the south means there’s
little to stop these circumpolar winds.
Cold frontal systems roll round the
world, one after another, with water
temperatures of 3-5 degrees and stray
icebergs providing extreme conditions.
Ratchet forward to the second part
of the 20th century – the Golden
Globe Race in 1968-1969 was the
first Round the World Race. Its
Southern Ocean course was via the
Great Capes, Africa’s Cape of Good
Hope, Australia’s Cape Leeuwin,
and South America’s Cape Horn.
Following the same route was the

HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL
To be successful you need a mix of skills.
In particular, if you race offshore you
need to be prepared for a wider variety
of conditions than inshore racers are
likely to encounter. This works both
ways – as well as the potential to meet
stronger winds, well away from sheltered
water, a lot of offshore racing also takes
part in very light airs and calms. While
inshore races are normally postponed
until a sea breeze fills in, an offshore
event will invariably be started even in
next to no wind, providing the fleet can
clear the line. Therefore minimising
sail area to trim a few points off a boat’s
IRC rating may be counterproductive
– indeed, many successful offshore
boats opt for the maximum size

spinnakers their rigs can sensibly carry.
Equally, offshore fleets encounter a
wider range of wind angles, particularly
compared to windward-leeward
racing. Over the course of a season
you’ll spend more time on white-sail
reaches, or relatively tight spinnaker
legs and will need to be able to trim for
maximum speed at these wind angles.

TEAM BUILDING
Working well together is more
than just putting a bunch of
talented individuals on the
same boat. Effective team
work requires a high degree of
communication and practice –
without that boat handling falls
apart and it becomes impossible
to consistently post good results.
An additional challenge is that,
in all but the most expensive
professional teams, it’s inevitable
that some team members will be
weaker than others. That’s even
the case in the Fast40+ fleet,
where the class rules restrict
the number of pros on board to
only five. It’s tempting to view
the least experienced as being
there only to provide ballast,
but that’s counterproductive on
many levels, especially in an era
in which most owners struggle to
recruit reliable crew. One of the
best ways to motivate and retain
people is to demonstrate their
importance to your campaign
by investing in their skills.
The basic skills needed aren’t

when they come into
the sport, most of the time it should in
fact be the last control they reach for,
says Steve Cockerill from Rooster Sailing.
It may sound counter-intuitive but
Steve’s talk at this year’s RYA Dinghy

– by his own admission a sailing

people to sail better and faster.
And to do this he is adamant that
there are two fundamental sailing

the first is that if you pull the rudder

the water; the second is that if you
push the rudder away from you, the
boom goes away from the water.

SMOOTH STEERING FEATURE

GAINS TO WINDWARD
The more you understand what the
foils do, the more you can fine tune
how your boat responds on all parts
of the race course. Upwind in light to
moderate conditions, for example, Steve
says you can heel the boat to windward
but push the rudder to counteract the
hull that is now trying to bear away.
You are going to slow down a bit
but you have effectively twisted the
angle at which the boat is going
through the water - by creating a
gybing effect on the centreboard -
allowing you to crawl to windward.
Tip: Try this in light winds when you
are trying to climb higher for a
tactical advantage. In a two-person
boat on flat water, have the crew
as far forwards as possible to
reduce the wetted surface area.

W
ith the benefit of
having ‘two bites
of the cherry’ by
appealing to a wide
range of sailors
– namely those making a transition
from dinghy sailing, as well as big
boat sailors looking to downsize – the
sportsboat market is huge, spanning
everything from two-man dayboat
classes up to the latest pocket rocket
mini grand prix keelboat designs.
While there is a vast range of boats
in these categories to choose from to
suit all abilities, it is interesting that in
recent years, it is some of the more
traditional designs such as the Squib,
Sonata, Impala, Etchells and Flying 15
that have seen a resurgence. Thanks to
clever marketing by strong, supportive,
pro-active associations, many of these
classes have attracted a new, young
generation which is, by definition, the
single most effective way of ensuring
a healthy future for a class.

The personal AIS transmitter therefore 7
gives a yacht’s crew far more chance of
locating and therefore rescuing a person

also have a DSC function which activates

the unit is attached to the lifejacket and

OFFSHORE SPECIAL REGULATIONS
World Sailing has four different categories that cover the requirements
for offshore and oceanic racing. There are also two special categories –
one for inshore (big boat) racing and one for inshore dinghy racing.
The entire document, which runs to more than 50 pages, plus a
further 55 pages of appendices, is essential reading for anyone who
races on a big boat – it can be downloaded for free at sailing.org
Category 0 is for trans-oceanic races, including races which pass through
areas in which air or sea temperatures are likely to be less than 5 degrees C
and where boats must be self-sufficient for extended periods and capable
of withstanding storms and emergencies without outside assistance.
Category 1 is similar, but without the low temperatures of ‘Cat 0’. As an
example, most transatlantic races are Category 1. Category 2 covers races of
extended duration along or not far removed from shorelines where a high degree
of self-sufficiency is required. This includes races such as the Rolex Fastnet.

FARR280 CLUB RACE
NEW Following the success of the Farr280 Grand Prix, which hit

RS Cat 14
NEW Popular UK marque, RS, is set to launch a
new beach catamaran in December at the Paris Boat
Show. RS says the boat takes the enjoyment and
handling associated with beach cats to a new level.
Like its bigger sister, the RS Cat 16, RS has yet again
focused on producing a high level of stiffness, despite
the rotomoulded construction – which should make
the boat perfect, not only for training and recreational
sailing, but also as a true performance pathway class.
The design’s special system for joining the beams to
the hulls gives increased stiffness compared to other
rotomoulded catamarans, with the bonus of allowing
the boat to be disassembled quickly for storage
or transport. Also available with a bigger XL rig.

Volvo cat concept
NEW It is important to note straight
off the bat, that this is merely one
proposal put forward for a foiling Volvo
Ocean Race catamaran, which would
take over the In-Port element of the
event’s racing should Mark Turner’s
vision of the future come to fruition.
Given that Turner has since stepped
away from the organisation, use
of foiling cats in the near future is
now looking less and less likely.
That said, this design does offer up
some exciting possibilities and, even
if it never is actually raced, supplies
some interesting talking points in much
the same way a concept car might.
Two key features really catch the
eye. First, there is the forward main
foil which, the designers claim, would
act like a forward steering canard,
increasing manoeuvrability. It also,
they say, would provide the bulk of the
hydrodynamic lift, making pitchpoles
much less likely. The second obvious
break from tradition is the enclosed
cockpit, which should improve
aerodynamic efficiency and also allow
for the safe inclusion of a guest seat in
a high performance foiler such as this.
