SEVEN MEDIEVAL PIECES

arranged for solo guitar by

Stathis Skandalidis

Among the 119 pieces contained in the Italian medieval manuscript London, British Library, MS.
Add. 29987, there are 15 monophonic instrumental dances. Most of them have been very popular with
musicians and the public alike and deservedly so. In arranging 7 of these dances for classical guitar I
have tried to keep the textures relatively thin, making the arrangements approachable for the less
experienced players and at the same time playable at brisk tempos if chosen so by advanced players.
I have provided a variety of right hand fingerings according to the desired articulation, tempo and
dynamics. Of course each player may come up with workable solutions of his own invention which suit
best his personal instrumental technique. In the Rotta I have included a phrase in the upper register of
the guitar which requires a high C, but those with a guitar without a 20th fret need not worry as this
phrase has been previously stated twice in the lower registers and therefore omitting this upper register
phrase would not harm the piece’s structure.

The Greek guitarist and lutenist Stathis Skandalidis studied musicology at the University of Athens,
classical guitar at Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf (Prof. Joaquin Clerch, with a scholarship
of the Public Benefit Foundation ‘Alexandros S. Onasis’), Akademie für Tonkunst Darmstadt (Prof.
Tilman Hoppstock), Mozarteum Salzburg (Prof. Wolfgang Guttmann), Hellenic Conservatory (prof.
Giorgos Diakosavvas) and New Conservatory of Thessaloniki (Prof. Costas Cotsiolis). He has attended
courses for historical performance with Jürgen Hübscher and Paul O’Dette.
He has won prizes and distinctions in international guitar competitions and given concerts in Greece,
England, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Romania and Italy invited by universities,
conservatories, guitar and lute festivals.
Stathis Skandalidis has recorded and given first performances of works dedicated to him by composers
Michalis Koumbios, Gilbert Isbin and Brian Wright. Some of these works have already been published
by the publishing houses of the Lute Society (U.K.), Lantro (Belgium) and Dohr (Germany).
Recordings of these works are scheduled to be released in 2015.
