Socket Head Screw
Socket heads are the standard for high-strength fastening. They can be installed in a counterbored hole or above the surface.
Flanged socket heads distribute pressure and cover irregular holes where the screws meets the surface.
Low socket heads are about half the height of standard socket heads for use in tight spaces.
Flat heads are angled under the head and provide a flush surface when countersunk. Most are angled 82°, but some have a shallower
100° angle for use in thin materials. They are not recommended for high-strength fastening.
Button heads have a low head and provide a finished appearance. They are not recommended for high-strength fastening. Flanged
button heads have a built-in washer that keeps the screw head from crushing thin or soft materials.
Inch thread sizes are specified by diameter and threads per inch. For those with a diameter smaller than 1/4", diameter is indicated by a
number (e.g., #1 or No.1).
Metric thread sizes are specified by diameter and pitch.
Understanding Threading
Fully threaded screws can be screwed all the way into a threaded hole.
Partially threaded screws have an unthreaded portion under the head for more holding power when force is applied from the side.
The unthreaded portion is stronger than the threaded portion of a screw.
Fully Threaded
Partially Threaded
These screws are made from an alloy steel that's stronger than Grade 8 steel. Length is measured from under the head.
Black-oxide steel screws are mildly corrosion resistant in dry environments.
Zinc-plated steel screws are more corrosion resistant than black-oxide screws for use in wet environments. The screws with a blue-dyed finish are easy to distinguish.
Zinc-flake-coated steel screws are 20 times as corrosion resistant as zinc-plated screws and comparable to Dacromet-coated screws.
Zinc-aluminum-coated steel screws are 40 times as corrosion resistant as zinc-plated screws and are also known as Magni-coated screws. They withstand 1,000 hours of
salt spray per ASTM B117.
