Answer each question completely. Calculators are allowed, but show all work. No credit is allowed
for mere answers with no work shown. Show the steps of calculations. State the reasons that justify
conclusions.
Question 6: /10
Question 7: /10
Question 8: /10
Question 9: /10
(b) (7 points) Perform one iteration of Newton’s Method with an initial value of x0 = 0 to find
the next approximation x1 to one of the real roots of f (x).
Give your answer as a simplified fraction – not in decimal form.
Question 7 (10 points). A rectangular sheet with perimeter 36 cm and dimensions x cm by y cm
is to be revolved around one of the sides of length y to sweep out a cylinder as shown.
Find the values of x and y that give the cylinder of maximum volume.
Use an appropriate test to show that your answer does give a maximum (rather than a minimum).
The discount decreases the price at a rate of $0.01 per unit ordered. That is, p(x) satisfies the
differential equation:
dp 1
=− ·p
dx 100
(a) (6 points) Solve the differential equation to find the general form of the price function p(x).
Show all details.
(b) (4 points) If the price per unit of a 100-unit order is p(100) = $20.09, what is the unit price
p(10) for a 10-unit order? Give an exact answer or round to the nearest cent.
Question 9 (10 points). A candy company currently makes a product consisting of chocolate spheres
with a diameter of 4mm.
A proposed new product would add a hard candy coating to each chocolate so that the new fin-
ished product is a sphere with a diameter of 5mm.
Using differentials, calculate an estimate of the volume of candy coating needed to cover 1000 choco-
4
late candies in this way. Give units with your answer. (Note: For a sphere, V = πr3 )

Question 10 (10 points). Using rectangles, find an approximation of the area A under the graph
of f (x) = 4x2 and above the x-axis over the interval [0, 2].
Use 100 rectangles of equal width and the left-hand endpoints of each interval to determine the
heights of the rectangles.
Give your final answer as a simplified fraction. It should not be a decimal number and it should
not contain any sigma sums.
