Software engineering is a discipline that will never lose its charm. With the continuous rise in use of
handheld devices, there are billions of devices now running several kinds of applications. This ensures
that the demand for software engineers will continue surging and the technologies will continue to
evolve, providing an excellent learning platform for professionals in this industry and thereby giving
them a chance to build lucrative careers for themselves.
Computers have always intrigued me personally. At the age of eleven during my summer holidays, I
used to accompany my uncle, a Network Engineer by profession, to his work place. I recall the time as
it were yesterday. Being surrounded by computers and hardware devices, I was always curious about
and tried to figure out how different operating systems took input from the user and responded. My
inquisitive nature led my uncle to answer even the silliest questions of mine and it was then that I
realised the interest I had for these machines and the codes behind them was going to take me
places.
Later in my life, I studied about the different stages of software engineering. It will only be fair if I
said that the process gets more and more interesting the higher we go up the process ladder. Right
from the phase when requirements are gathered from the client, to designing of the programme,
coding, testing and implementation and continuous maintenance, the software engineer steers the
ship through thick and thin. Despite several challenges and setbacks, the never ending passion to
build fully working software with least possible bugs keeps the engineer going.
During my first year in university, I was asked to work with a group of students to prepare a client
server based system. We decided to build a hospital management system. I was entrusted with
debugging of the system in the final stages. I worked late nights with my class mates and had never
felt the time which passed so quickly. After days of sleepless nights, we finally got the programme
working. The system was implemented in a local clinic which made me and my team members very
proud. It is this fantastic feeling of accomplishment which drives me to not give up on even the
toughest of problems. Few areas of my education have stimulated me to think as much as my
undergraduate courses in Software programming and Software Engineering have.
With so many interesting life events and the passion for software development running through my
blood, I decided to build a career in Software Systems engineering. I intend to pursue a Meng degree
in Software systems engineering in order to reach that goal. The vast syllabus of software
engineering courses offered in your master’s program would definitely help me in my career; also the
Co-op option would help me get some practical experience in the industry. I also see that the
distinguished faculty and excellent facilities at your university make its Meng program ideally suited to
my professional goals.
After completion of Olevel’s & GED in American college of Dubai. I joined Preston University (Ajman,
UAE) for my undergraduate studies where I completed my Bachelors of Science in Information
Technology. I have benefited from Preston University’s syllabi content that has given me a
comprehensive exposure to the core areas of Computer Science and a strong conceptual
understanding of the same. Few of the courses which I have completed are: Software engineering,
Network essentials, Network security, Programming in visual languages & Mobile computing.
Following are few of the programming languages which I have worked on C++, C# (Sharp), Visual
Basic, Asp.net, SQL, Java & Oracle
For the completion of my BSIT degree program I had to work on 2 capstone projects.
The first capstone project was a report and was based on the topic “Routing for Bluetooth
networks”. The project has information about Bluetooth technology, Protocol stacks, scatternets,
clustering algorithms which included scatternet formation rules, BTCP, MIT scatternet formation
algorithm. It also covered routing in Bluetooth methods which covered the routing vector method and
Bluetooth routing scheme. Finally simulation and its results are also provided and possible
enhancement techniques are also provided.
The second capstone project was a complete project which included a working program (web
based) car rental system and a report on how the construction was done. The web application
operated on with the following web browsers: Microsoft internet explorer version 5.0 +. Operating
system: windows 2000, XP, windows 7. Languages used: Asp.net, C# and scripting is done using Java
script. Software requirements: SQL server 2005, .Net Framework 2.0. Visual studio 2012 was used for
the development.
After completion of my bachelors, I thought of going for an MBA because I wanted to get into the
management sector & am currently enrolled in Thompson Rivers University and am taking three
courses which are as follows: Intro to professional writing, financial accounting & Marketing
management. Now I realize that I want to switch back to computing/technology field as that I what’s
best for me.
In conclusion I would be grateful if I’m accorded the opportunity to pursue my graduate studies at
University of Regina and am able to justify your faith in me. I look forward to being a creative leader
for future research in the field of Software System Engineering.
