Integration of Fire & Security Systems
A step beyond the outdated practice of interfacing is system integration. System integration is the
bringing together the component sub-systems into one system and ensuring that the sub-systems
function together as a system. A system is an aggregation of sub-systems co-operating so that the
system is able to deliver the over-arching functionality. System integration involves integrating
existing (often disparate) sub-systems. System integration is also about value-adding (to the
system) capabilities that are possible because of interactions between sub-systems.
Following fig shows the system integration architecture of the fire and security system. which
shows the different subsystems are combined or integrated to operate as single system which is
controlled or monitored by control center.

1. Fire Alarm System with Access Control System

through the controlled doors. However, what happens in the event of a fire? The access control

system could prevent people from escaping or prevent the fire department from entering the
building. Many municipalities provide rules for how the fire alarm integrates with the door access
system.
Most fire codes designate that when a fire alarm occurs, the access control system should open all
the electric locks to provide free access and exit. Each municipality has different regulations. In
some cases the system can be controlled through the network, in other cases, they may require a
directly wired system that controls power to each lock.
The door access control reader and the electric lock can be wired to the fire alarm in a number of
different ways. We can use a relay to drop power to the electric lock, or use an IP device that drops
power using the network connection, or add a power control box that drops power when the fire
alarm system detects a fire. The wiring used in these examples should conform to the fire codes.
Here are the examples of how to control your access control system using direct wiring from the
fire alarm control box.
In this example, the fire alarm provides a ground signal to a relay that controls power to all the
locks. In this configuration, the 12 VDC power to the lock originates from a central power supply.
It can be used with a mag lock or a strike that is configured in “fail safe” mode.

This power control method is designed for IP door readers. It uses the Altronix Entrada2DMK IP
access control adapter kit. The kit includes two adapters, one is placed near the fire alarm box and
the other near the IP door reader and electric lock.

The device-side adapter provides power to the IP reader (using PoE) as well as to the electric lock.
When a fire alarm signal is detected, the controlled power to the lock is removed. The adapter
maintains power to the IP door reader. This system is very flexible so you can select normally
open or normally closed trigger from the fire alarm box, and 12 VDC or 24VDC to the lock. A
dedicated network cable is required between the transmitter and receiver adapters. A number of
receivers can be daisy chained to one of the receivers connected to the transmitter

Video Engine:
Video monitoring using Bosch or third-party video systems From analog to digital Analog matrix
switches, traditional PC-based video recording systems or new IP video technologies – the Video
Engine supports the entire Bosch video portfolio. The consistent use of open standards makes it
readily compatible with third-party systems. This is not only practical, but also good for your
budget.
Added value through integration The Video Engine is versatile and easy to combine with
other security systems an advantage that generates numerous synergies: the Video Engine turns
standard cameras into motion detectors with an alarm function. In addition, combining it with
intrusion alarm systems (Automation Engine) or access control systems (Access Engine) opens up
a whole range of possibilities for improved alarm management. Video verification of access
attempts or analysis of archived material are just two examples of the possible applications.

Access Engine:
Access control using Bosch access control hardware.
The door to the data center has been open too long, or an employee is being threatened at the rear
entrance to the building. Both scenarios require immediate action. When integrated into the
Building Integration System, the Access Engine immediately displays such events together with
the appropriate action plan. This permits your personnel to respond without delay.

Honeywell’s WIN-PAK software allows video surveillance and intrusion detection to be added
quickly and easily to a WIN-PAK access control solution. The benefit is seamless integration that
offers a common look and feel for access control hardware as well as video and intrusion solutions.
Functions that have traditionally been tied together with physical relays and input devices are now
controlled logically. This simplicity gives users greater control over their systems than they had
using multiple software platforms and interfaces. It includes
Integrating Video Surveillance:
1) View live video from up to 16 cameras simultaneously at the touch of a button on site or
remotely
2) The ability to enhance the picture image, zoom-in digitally and flip/mirror pictures enables
the user to get the optimum picture
3) Check on stock rooms or view lobby entrances
4) View delivery bays and car parks
5) Screen visitors at the entranceway
6) Monitor valuable assets, inventory and important records
7) View recorded video to check on business openings and closings
8) Digitally signed clips can be exported for future use
9) Conduct and view secure guard tours
10) Schedule ‘live’ site visits that are conducted electronically while the system simultaneously
records video in time lapse mode, granting users instant access to, and easy search and
retrieval of, important information
11) Operate the software in a native language via a multiple language user interface

3. Siemens: Desigo CC
Desigo CC is a flexible building management platform that simplifies tasks and processes in an
intelligent way. It allows you to complete building control and safety tasks in a fast, secure and
comfortable manner. Desigo CC is based on a SCADA platform, making it fully compliant with
BACnet Advanced Operator Workstation (B-AWS) and enabling integration from single to
multiple building disciplines, such as building management – heating, ventilation and air
conditioning, lighting and shading – up to fire safety and security.
Desigo CC is based on global communications standards such as BACnet, OPC, Modbus, IEC
61850, SNMP and ONVIF, allowing external applications to read and write real-time data via a
REST web service interface. 3rd-party devices using proprietary protocols can also be integrated
through Desigo CC drivers. This open platform enables a global community of developer partners,
solution partners, independent system integrators, facility managers and OEMs to ensure a
dynamic and creative incremental development of building management by gathering information
and exchanging ideas, products and services.
