PROCESS SYNTHESIS Homework 1 KEK3157

Question 1

113456 lb/hr

44880 lb/hr

Assuming 100% conversion in the chlorination reaction and 65% conversion in the pyrolysis reaction,
determine the amount of recycle stream, R (with all C 2H4Cl2 recycle back to the pyrolysis reactor).

The flow sheet should look like below diagram.

Note: For the feed into the reactor R1, use Mole Flow instead of Mass Flow. This is to avoid round off
error in the results session.

Question 2

For the production of ethylene glycol, compare the gross profit per pound of ethylene glycol when using
the conventional pathway (R.1 & R.2) and the alternative pathway (R.3, using chlorine and caustic). Give
comments on the results.

Conventional pathways (2 reactions is series):

Alternative pathways:

Components Price, $/lb MW, lb/lbmol

Ethylene 0.215 28.05

Ethylene glycol 0.26 62.07

NaOH 1.70 40.08

Cl2 0.128 70.91

NaCl 0 58.44
